Guest Blogger: Nya Rawlyns with a Pumping Iron Character Interview

Today have I have two special guests. I'm tickled to introduce Sean Rourke and Mike Douglas. They are debuting in Pumping Iron and have graciously stopped by for an interview.

Two random people will win an ebook bundle (Curling Iron & Pumping Iron in epub or mobi format). To enter, all you need to do is leave a comment and include your email address on today, September 15th. Two people will win the giveaway at each blog stop Nya makes on her book tour. If you miss commenting before the 15th is over, check out the tour list for the next stop. It can be found at the bottom of this post. Good luck!!

Gentlemen, I'm so glad to have you here. The bar is open, what would you like to drink?

Sean? *looks over at Mike and smirks* Sam Adams. Oktoberfest if you have it, otherwise anything other than “lite.” *makes the finger quotes and ducks as Mike takes a mock swing at him*

Mike? *nods agreement* Seems I finally won Sean over to my more sophisticated tastes. Him and his scotches and brandies and drinks with umbrellas. *shakes head* Make that two of whatever you’ve got on tap. *Sean and Mike tap frosted mugs and toast each other, their eyes revealing a friendly challenge*

Gentleman, I promise not to grill you too hard—mostly. *smirks* Let me know if you would like another drink.

Mike: Just keep these filled and we’ll be just fine.

My first question is for Sean. Tell us a little about yourself. How long have you been working for Bad Boyfriends? How does one become an A-list escort?

I’ve been with the agency for about eight months. I was a regular on Night’s Edge—that’s a network soap. But they wrote me out of the script. After that I couldn’t buy my way into a role so I did what I had to do to survive. *Sean stares at the floor, considering how much to reveal* I got myself into a bit of financial trouble. Bad Boyfriends made me an offer. *he blushes* Seems I had a lot of influential fans following my gay character on the show. They seemed to like the idea of me being arm candy for the evening, even if I was a has-been. You’d think industry professionals wouldn’t have a tough time linking up, but the hours and the crazy life… Well, as it turned out, I knew a lot of them, as a co-worker or friend. There were no awkward entanglements, and it brought extra business to the agency. I call that a win-win.

Mike, if it's not giving too much away, what are your special negotiating skills? How have they helped with running a training center for athletes?

Kane … he runs Bad Boyfriends … and I grew up together in a small town. We were best friends from the age of six. He was the brain, I was the brawn. That made us a good team, but when we graduated high school Kane got a scholarship to Columbia. I got a diploma and a handshake. *he grins* I had nothing else going on so I enrolled in the community college and got an associate degree in corrections and law enforcement. After a few turns handing out speeding tickets and enforcing curfews, I eventually I ended up here in New York City. Joined a fitness club, got into weight lifting. Did a few competitions. *he shrugs* Guess I did okay. Made a few friends along the way. When the fitness center came on the market, Kane was looking to expand, and I had a handful of clients ready to follow me to the new location. The rest, as they say is history. *he looks over at Sean, his expression giving nothing away* As for negotiating? Let’s just say I can be very persuasive when I need to.

Sean, what is one thing about you that people wouldn't know by looking at you?

*Sean fidgets, purposely does not look in Mike’s direction.* Uh, well… I like to lose? *Mike explodes with laughter* Sorry. Private joke.

Mike, what is the most difficult part of your work? Are there any highlights that make the bad days worth the effort?

*Mike gets a smug look on his face, glances sideways at Sean* I like making my clients sweat, pushing them to the next level. You know, going for the gusto. Even when they’re whining like little girls. *Sean snorts. Mike grins* It makes my day when the client realizes the only person he has to best is himself. That’s like an epiphany. *he looks directly at Sean* Sometimes that works both ways.

Sean, how would you describe Mike? Are you friends or simply co-workers? What are his good and not so good qualities?

We were just co-workers at first. The agency and the fitness center are run by the same people. Kane sends all his escorts to Mike for fitness and nutrition training. That’s how we met. Mike always struck me as being like a marine drill sergeant, not that I know any, you understand. But he has that way about him … like he chews nails as snacks. When he’s training you, he’s all business. And he doesn’t take no for an answer. I hated him for a long time because of it. That was before I discovered he’s… Um, nevermind. *Mike preens*

Mike, I hear that you and Sean are going to work on a special joint project. Are you looking forward to working closely with Sean? Do you foresee any hiccups on this project? I heard the attorney was a bit wily.

We’re babysitting a long-time client of Kane’s, at the request of the man’s law firm. Seems the attorney’s got a history of misbehaviors that the firm thinks might hurt the political ambitions of one of the senior partners. Sean and I have been tasked with keeping him out of the way while the firm looks into mitigating the damage. *Mike purses his lips, clearly not thrilled with the upcoming job* Sean’s been delegated the client’s entertainment director for the duration, given their past association. *the frown deepens* It seems simple enough. Keep the guy isolated, away from … um, distractions. I’m mostly there to provide backup. *he glances at Sean, his eyes going smoky dark* Mostly.

*fans self* Uhm… *clears throat* I think I need to have the air-conditioning checked. Gentlemen, thank you so very much for stopping by. I loved our talk and had such a great time getting to know you. I hope you won't be strangers.

*Mike and Sean chug the last of their beers and stand. They shake hands and turn to leave*

Mike mutters, “Wanna make it interesting?”

Sean raises an eyebrow. “Interesting how…?”

Mike smirks and says, “First one back gets to…”

*They exit together, then Sean takes off like a shot*

Well... I don't know about you, but my mind keeps going "there". Did you see all the smoldering looks passed back and forth between those two? Just between you and me, Mike didn't seem to like this joint project with the lawyer. I'm thinking that some sparks are going to flying there... but you didn't hear that from me. ^_^

I hadn't hear of the Bad Boyfriends series until here recently. Nya was kind enough to share with us a little but about the first book in the series, Curling Iron.

Curling Iron (Bad Boyfriends #1)

Blurb:

Kane leads a double life. By day, he pumps iron, running a fitness center, where jocks and Cougar flock for the burn and the ‘tude. By night, it's something else entirely that gets pumped, as Kane swaps sweats for Armani to cater to an exclusive clientele, willing to pay well to indulge their special interests and tastes. His double life isn’t a problem until his conniving ex tightens the financial screws.

Finding and retaining suitable companions for his after-dark clients isn’t easy. David Black’s pole dancing performance at a friend's club hints that he might hit all the bullet points on Kane’s list of requirements, in a way that could mean something other than “just business.”

David is out of work and out of options, so when he’s offered the choice of starvation or performing both on and off the stage, it’s a no-brainer. Kane’s offer of a position with the escort service is as attractive as the man himself, and David agrees to a trial period involving certain conditions. He quickly finds that he’s out of his depth.

Confronted with unanticipated roadblocks, one thing is clear… neither man is taking no for an answer.

Excerpt:

I stifled the urge to sneeze. Mold. I was allergic to mold.

Apparently so was the tall man staring at one of the boss’s art deco posters—Captain America, but modern, not an antique. He sneezed and reached into a coat pocket, pulled out a handkerchief and swiped at his face. From the back he looked familiar. Dark hair, broad shoulders, overcoat from a custom big and tall men’s store. He looked angry or pissed or just not happy to be there—body posture was one of my specialties. I don’t need to see the face to know which way the wind blows.

My heart sank. If he was a detective, that “only the one” was probably me ending up at the precinct for lewd and lascivious behavior. I’d taken Charlie’s advice. I’d courted the pole last night, in a prime and prissy way. Tonight, I’d gone full frontal assault, with more grind than bump, and got a hard-on from my efforts that bulged the pleather pouch to the breaking point.

My sixty-three dollars was now looking like bail money.

Clearing my throat, I plastered polite on my face, and asked, “You wanted to see me?” He wasn’t a customer. No point in pretending otherwise.

He turned.

I swallowed. My tongue thickened. Spit pooled in my mouth, threatening to drizzle down my chin.
He nodded. I nodded. I went to sit in the folding chair in front of the desk.

“Don’t.”

I didn’t.

The soft cashmere turtleneck was a dead giveaway. This was my too smexy for his shoes guy from the audience, the one sitting next to the stage, the one I’d copped a feel with my eyes at the end of the routine… That one. There. Giving me a once, twice, thrice-over.

The pouch bulged.

A grin played at the corners of his mouth. I hoped he had handcuffs. I really hoped he liked doing bad cop.

He held out a hand, said, “I’m Kane.”

We shook. I shook, mostly inside, but it was a close call. I had the presence of mind to ask, “May I see some identification?”

He looked surprised, but fished in an interior pocket and pulled out a small, flat metal holder. He withdrew a business card and handed it over.

I stared, not exactly processing much…

BAD BOYFRIENDS
1-800-bad-boys

While I mouthed Bad Boyfriends, he said, “I have a proposal for you, Mr.—”

“Black. David Black.” It was tempting to extend my hand again for another shake, a formal one. One where I could maybe fondle the backs of those long, elegant fingers, do a few sweeps with my thumb, my tongue, my tongue tied in knots, brain in lockdown.

“You’re not a cop?”

I looked at him, really looked at eyebrows drawn together tight, stern, over eyes that were blue, but not. More like Smoky Mountains hazy blue, flat, intense. He was scary handsome, scary imposing, a total alpha, I eat interns for breakfast, sexual metro hunka way out of my league.

He chuckled. That made it worse.

September Scramble

Sort of behind on my blog posts. :-/ I've been pushing to get projects finished and quite frankly it's been exhausting.

Keeping Faith was submitted last week and I'm waiting to hear back from the publisher.

I reviewed the Twin Flames galley, made a couple of adjustments and returned it this week. I got to see the full cover on it and I'm dying to get this in print. The ebook is up on pre-order at the publisher Less Than Three Press, and as of yesterday, All Romance. Remember that if you order directly from the publisher before October 1st you'll get a 15% discount.

The last immediate editing that I'm working on is for Songs of the Earth. I want to have that done by... well... hopefully tonight.

I have to admit that I have the writing blues. With the exception of blog posts I haven't written a new word toward a story in five weeks. I dream of new stories that leave me feeling antsy when I get up because I can't do anything about it until all of this editing is cleared from my plate.

Even then, when I'm finished with Songs of the Earth the next project is a pronunciation guide for Alpha Trine & Striker. Which honestly is so flippin' ass cool that the project will probably go really fast.

I just remembered that I also need to look over Werewolf's Tale & A Druid Sword so I can submit it. *covers eyes* More editing. At least it's not on a timeline-urgent-people-are-waiting-on-it-you-slow-poke.

After that I need to write seven blog posts for Twin Flames release week, hopefully this weekend. I had hoped that I would have time to write a small prequel for the blog tour and I don't think that I'll have time. I'm going to try anyway. It will strong depend on how long it will take me to write 10k from Ushna's perspective and have a down and dirty edit done before September 24th. Which sounds fairly easy but today is the 12th. I'm going to Chicago the 15th, seeing Ed Sheeran in concert with Sue and Piper on the 16th, and then driving back home on my birthday, the 17th. ALL of my GRL stuff needs to be ordered by the 18th. That would leave me five days to work some magic. We'll see what happens.

All of this editing mojo has tampered with my sleep schedule to the point I'm going to bed at the crack of dawn. I'm trying to fix that now or next week will be hell. Piper is going to smack me upside the head if I fall asleep at Ed's concert. ^_^  Wish me luck because going to need it. And coffee, lots and lots of coffee.

Appearances Blog Tour, T.M. Smith Guest Blog Post and the Music Playlist

Playlist for Opposites

Music is a huge part of my writing process, and there are songs that take me where I need to be to write... and then there are songs specific to certain characters or chapters in the book. Early on there is a scene when Maeve, Tanis and Kaden are en route to the palace and Maeve is taking in her surroundings.

Every time I hear Celtic Dream I think about this particular chapter. Very whimsical, fresh and new. Both Aiyan and Raven play the violin, and Aiya plays the piano, so there is a lot of instrumental music I listen to when I’m writing around them. Rain on the Pond is a song that is mentioned twice in the book, Lament has its own chapter, and Sirtaki is the dance they do at Aiya and Maeve’s wedding.

Every song on this playlist is directly related to something in the book, in some fashion.

Blurb: In the year 2081 our planet survived global warming of an apocalyptic scale. When the dust settled and the water receded Dr. Anthony Smith, one of only a few hundred survivors of GWI, started society anew. Having come to the conclusion that injudicious breeding played a huge role in the destruction of Earth as we knew it in the twenty first century, he worked closely with other survivors to isolate the Dionysus gene. This gene has the ability to manipulate human DNA to ensure that all male children be born gay, and all female children be born lesbians. A new society is born.

In the year 2300 Dr. Smith’s descendants are ushering in the twenty fourth century having maintained control of the government that still rules society. Twins Aiya and Aiyan are preparing to meet their matches and take control of House Gaeland, the current ruling House. But not everything is as it seems.

Love is Love.. it knows no gender and doesn’t conform to restrictions and boundaries. Aiyan has found his soul mate in Kaden, the prince of House Devi that he is matched with and eventually marries. But when the person Aiya falls in love with tests the boundaries put in place after GWI, all hell breaks loose. And in the midst of one secret unraveling, another will emerge. There is a growing anomaly that threatens to destroy over two hundred years of progression. This anomaly is known as Opposites.

Deadlines, Galley, and Edits Oh, My!

C.R.A.Z.I.N.E.S.S.

Not kidding. I'm surprised I can find my head with everything that is going on. This will probably read more like a newsletter. So much has been happening!

Earlier this month I submitted The Aurora Conspiracy to Less Than Three Press for their Keeping The Stars Running Anthology. I'm waiting to hear back from them, hoping they like it. I adore this short story but I'm biased.

I also submitted Ruby Red Booty Shorts & A Louisville Slugger. Hopefully I'll have some good news for this series in a few weeks. The second book in the series, Werewolf's Tale & A Druid's Sword, is finished and has been sitting on my hard drive collecting metaphorical dust. It needs some good editing... which I need to get to soon.

I received the galley for Twin Flames. The re-release date is scheduled for October 1st. I've been contacting places to host me for the blog tour. I have three spots left: October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

London Burden designed the new cover for Twin Flames. I adore this cover. She's also forming the bookmark to match. Yay!

*Points Up* Did you see my new banner. Again, Breathless Design knocked it out of the ball park. She also made me some fantastic bookmarks. I think that I'll have like a series of them done for each re-release of different characters. We'll see what happens but I'm really stoked with what I have right now. No, I'm not going to show you--yet.

Swag, swag, and more swag. Pre-orders is you are going to GRL and wish to buy a paperback ahead of time. Look at the top, I have tab with the order form. :-)

Earlier this week I received Twin Flames swag that I ordered for the blog tour and for GRL. Since this series is Fantasy/Menage/M-preg, that's like a small-of-a-small niche in the M/M romance genre so I didn't go too crazy when I ordered non-paper swag. There will be a limited supply of real ceramic coffee cups for GRL. Closer to the blog tour date, I'll post pictures of the prizes that I have for the re-release. I'm really happy with the quality and will probably order something similar again for Songs of the Earth re-release.

Speaking of which, guess what was in my mailbox this morning??? The first round edits for Songs of the Earth

Color me tickled... and overwhelmed!!

And talking about GRL and swag. Y'all remember the sketches I did leading up to the release of Striker (The Valespian Pact, 2)? I picked out the best ones and asked Breathless Design  to help me make them into trading cards. I've decided I will continue to do character sketches and for each new Valespian Pact release. The best ones will be added to the trading card portfolio. I'm so excited to see where this project will go!

The lovely Aisha Akeju designed the fantastic covers for Alpha Trine and Striker. She also helped me with a bookmark for Alpha Trine for GRL swag and I will see about having a bookmark made for Striker as well, but that will probably be a couple weeks away.

*waves arms vigorously in the air* it looks like Alpha Trine and Striker are going to audiobook. I'm not flippin' kidding. Dude! Dude! Dude! I just... you have no idea how freakin' stoked I am. *runs around in frantic circles*

Four days are left in the month and I'm pushing to have the first draft of Keeping Faith revised and edited by month end. Revising and editing doesn't always go as fast as anyone wants and the frustration level is high. It looks as if Keeping Faith has a home and so I want to get it there as soon as possible but not until I'm satisfied with the end result.

With Keeping Faith nearing completion, I wanted to put a fresh face to the first book, Playing For Keeps, which Breathless Design did fabulously. Fireborn Publishing has offered to host this little free story on their website. I actually need to write a blurb for this before I send Playing For Keeps over to them.

What's next, you ask?

Well, in the editing sphere, Werewolf's Tale & A Druid's Sword for one and the huge 100+k manuscript for Fate & Destinies.

For writing? I will be finishing the Sumeria's Sons series with Dragon's Eye and Releasing Chaos. I'm so very stoked to write these last two books. With everything that needs to happen to reach that HEA I'm switching it up a bit and you'll have not only Tristan's POV but Ushna and Nikita's as well. I'll also have a couple of free short stories that will fit between the books from side characters. So don't miss out on those either. If you weren't aware, I'm planning two offshoot series, Sumeria's Magi and Sumeria's Children. ^_^

And if there is enough time before the end of the year, start writing Bespoken (The Valespian Pact, 3). The next books of this series will be written close together and somewhere in there I'll have to fit writing the rest of the I.O.N. series as well.

Are you as exhausted as I am??

August has been a busy month, a fantastic month, and an exhausting month. And GOOD, so very, very good. I cannot tell you how thankful I am to be this busy.

Love you guys! Thank you for making the next couple of months as busy as they are.

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

Top Ten Reasons the #CampusCravings MM Bundle Rocks!

Hi everyone! We're the authors of Campus Cravings, a MM bundle releasing 8/25. Thanks so much for hosting us during our release week, or, if you're a reader, for taking the time to read this! We really appreciate it!

An excerpt from The Eloquent Jock...by Cassandra Carr

Brendan’s mouth dropped open. “Want…me?”

“Why is that so hard to believe?” I am so screwed, and not in a good way. A headache began to take hold and he moved his hand to massage harder.

“Look at you,” Brendan waved a hand in Scott’s general direction. “You’re gorgeous, you’re successful, you’re sophisticated. I’m just some confused shmuck who’s never even kissed a guy.”

“Never?” I should not care about this. I need to stop. No good can come of this.

Brendan’s face bloomed red. “No. I’m not the type to walk into some gay bar and pick up a guy. Just the thought of it kinda makes me want to puke.”

“Not everyone is interested in that lifestyle.”

“Are you?” Brendan shook his head. “I’m sorry. I don’t have the right to ask you that. I know I’m making an ass of myself right now, I just don’t know what to do.”

“About what?” Scott dug himself deeper with every word, but he couldn’t stop.

Brendan clenched his fists on the desk, tapping his knuckles. Meanwhile, his right leg bounced and the poor kid looked as if he would self-combust from the red suffusing his face.

After a moment of charged silence, Brendan said, “So, you want me, but can’t have me.”

“Right.”

“Well, you’re the first guy I’ve ever wanted. I’ve known about my sexuality for a while now, but this is the first time I’ve met somebody who actually interested me beyond a casual attraction. And this sucks. I’m distracted; I can’t do my schoolwork; I’m making mistakes on the ice. I can’t have this.”

Scott leaned against the window and asked, “Then what do you want to do?”

Brendan licked his lips and Scott’s treacherous gaze followed the movement. “This.” Before Scott could even react, Brendan had grabbed him and kissed him, sloppily pushing his tongue into Scott’s mouth even as Scott tried to force his muddled brain to catch up with the program. He moaned as Brendan’s strong arms came around his waist, pulling their groins together. For a guy with no experience, the man revved Scott up pretty fucking fast. His dick pushed against Brendan’s sizable erection. Brendan moaned and the back of Scott’s head bounced off the glass behind him as Brendan attacked his mouth with even more vigor.

The pain radiating through his skull brought Scott out of his trance. He shoved Brendan away—shit, the guy had some strength for a man his size—and retreated to the corner of the office. Brendan stood between him and the door or he would’ve bolted that way.

“We can’t do this,” he managed to gasp out. His body had a very different opinion, but Scott ignored his baser needs. Someone had to take charge and stop this madness.

“You said you wanted me.”

Scott blew out a loud breath through his nose. “That doesn’t mean we should do anything about it. In fact, it would be a lot safer for both of us if we didn’t.”

“Because you’re a professor?”

“Well yes, that. And I’m, what, fifteen years older than you?”

“You’re saying I’m just some dumb kid who doesn’t know any better?” Brendan began to turn away, but then spun back. “You responded to me. That might’ve been my first kiss, but I know what happened. You liked it.”

Putting up a hand in a placating gesture, Scott said, “I’m not denying anything, but enjoying a kiss and letting it go on are two different things.”

“I get it.” Scott tried to go on, but Brendan stopped him. “No, I do. I get it. I’m sorry.” Before Scott could stop him, he’d grabbed his bag off the chair he’d dumped it onto earlier, yanked open the door, and slipped through it. As he slammed the door behind him, Scott slumped to the floor.
“That went well, you jackass,” he muttered.

An excerpt from Switching Leads…by Mia Downing

John nodded slowly. “I never realized how you felt about me or my riding. I never believed…” He took a deep breath. “You told me you loved me, and then I found you in bed with Dean, and then the job…” He shrugged and looked away. “I never believed how you felt about me then. And I’ve been pissed for ten years.”

Finn swallowed, his heart hammering. “Now do you believe I felt that way?” He wasn’t going to ask if John believed he loved him still. Baby steps.

John’s gaze flickered from Finn’s eyes to mouth and back up again in a slow perusal that seared Finn’s skin. “Yeah,” he said hoarsely and leaned across the stool between them. His lips brushed Finn’s surprised ones in a gentle kiss.

He’d dreamed about this for so long—John’s acceptance of his apology—but never had it ended like this, with those firm lips sliding across his as if coaxing belief from the inside.

John withdrew and slid from his stool. He spun Finn’s seat a little and eased between Finn’s thighs, the beginning of an erection pressing against Finn’s zipper. Finn’s cock throbbed at the contact, his belly contracting with anticipation.

“I’m sorry,” John whispered, his pupils dilated, eyes hooded as he stared down into Finn’s eyes. His chest rose and fell rapidly against Finn’s.

“For what?”

“For being unprofessional. I’ve never kissed a co-worker before.” John bent and brushed Finn’s mouth in another kiss, this one a little longer with a touch of heat. Finn didn’t dare open his mouth and beg for tongue. In the past, Finn had ruled their sex life, had directed the kisses. The fact that John had switched leads on him was as heady as a bottle of good Bourbon.

“I promise I won’t tell,” Finn murmured when John lifted his lips.

John cupped the back of Finn’s head with his palm. “Good.”

An excerpt from Winning Bracket...by Annabeth Albert

“Hold up. If I filled out a bracket and mine beat yours, you’d do whatever I wanted? Like anything?”

“Sure.” Ollie shrugged, an insolent lift of surprisingly wide shoulders inside a too-big shirt. “I mean not all day. But sure, you want me to be a slave for an hour or something, I can take it.”

Ka-pow. The firecracker exploded, hot want raining down on Edwin, sparking against his skin. Anything. Ollie-as-slave images began to run on repeat in his brain, Ollie getting considerably less clothing with each pass. Edwin could ask for anything, and it would just be a joke to Ollie—a lark to be laughed over later, no more of a big deal than opening up with a can of silly string or shorting his sheets every night for a week.

Oh my god. Would it work? Could he use something like this—a stupid bet on stupid basketball—to exorcise the Ollie demons that had plagued him for years, all without having to admit how he felt about Ollie? Because while Ollie had been busy with the jock-crush-of-the-month plan, Edwin had been hung up on Ollie. For three and a half years. If a stupid bet could shake Edwin free, then it was worth having to learn something about basketball.

“Okay,” he whispered.

“Yay!” Ollie clambered off the bed, springs squeaking as he hit the floor. “You’ll see. This is going to be a great couple of weeks! So what are we going to play for this week? If my bracket does better by Sunday night, you send an email supporting the next watch party and you show up. And if you win…”

“I want a kiss.” The words escaped Edwin before he could call them back, before he could temper them with logic or suppress them with reality.

Thank you so much to everyone who's supported us! We hope you enjoy the bundle!

Guest Post: “Happy Independence Day” by Michael Rupured Blog Tour

I want to thank Michel for stopping by the blog today. He's treating us to an inside look on a profile for one of his characters, Kreema Dee Kropp. <3

Before I wrote Happy Independence Day, my new release from Dreamspinner Press, I’d heard about the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and knew the headline: Queens top cops, launch gay liberation movement. Okay. Let’s stop for a minute. Close your eyes and visualize the scene.

Got it? Good. If you imagined a bunch of men in wigs, dresses, and high heel shoes battling the police, you’re not even half right. Don’t feel bad. I came to this project with the same image in mind. The headline is true, but the word “queen” conjures up a different image today than was true fifty years ago.

Referring to gay men as queens is nothing new. Gay men get a lot of use from the word too. To us, for example, a group of gay men—whether decked out in chains and harnesses or in full drag—is still a bunch of queens. We might not say so in the company of our straight friends, but it’s what we’re thinking. Trust me.

In the sixties, queens came in varieties now believed to be extinct. Flame queens, scare queens, and fright queens were specific types of homosexuals that allegedly went the way of the dinosaur after the Stonewall Riots. I’ve never been clear on the distinctions between the three types, or whether they’re synonyms for the same type, but suspect the differences came down to attractiveness, age, and maybe style.

Details about what happened in the early morning hours of June 28 are sketchy. Reports vary, with conflicting eyewitness accounts, very few pictures, and no video footage. But by all accounts, queens—including drag queens—played an important role in the uprising and, consequently, needed a voice in Happy Independence Day. Many, I suspect, would identify as trans* today.

In my notes, that voice was to come from Chica Boomboom, a sassy Puerto Rican drag queen. But Chica refused to talk to me, probably due to my ignorance about her language and culture. By the time I started writing from her point of view, she’d morphed into Kreema Dee Kropp, an African-American from somewhere in the South. Uhmhmm.

Unlike the scare queens and flame queens of the day who’d sometimes wear a little makeup, don a women’s blouse or high heel shoes, and tease their hair for a night on the town, Kreema lived as a woman all day, every day. A quick wit and a sense of humor were survival skills. Writing her character opened my eyes to the challenges she and others like her must have faced in the 1960s when gay life was hard—even for white men.

Kreema Dee Kropp is the strongest character I’ve ever written. Her voice is loud, persistent, and demanding. She’s not going to let anyone take advantage of her, including me. Writing her character was a revelation that left me wondering what she might have accomplished in a more accepting and tolerant world. I suspect she’ll turn up again in a future story—perhaps in a starring role, rather than the supporting role she plays in Happy Independence Day.

Happy Independence Day

Blurb:
Terrence Bottom wants to change the world. A prelaw student at Columbia University majoring in political science, his interests range from opposing the draft and the war in Vietnam, to civil rights for gays, to anything to do with Cameron McKenzie. Terrence notices the rugged blond hanging around the Stonewall Inn, but the handsome man—and rumored Mafia hustler—rebuffs his smiles and winks.

Cameron McKenzie dropped out of college and left tiny Paris, Kentucky after the death of the grandmother who raised him, dreaming of an acting career on Broadway. Although he claims to be straight, he becomes a prostitute to make ends meet. Now the Mafia is using him to entrap men for extortion schemes, he is in way over his head, and he can’t see a way out—at least not a way that doesn’t involve a swim to the bottom of the Hudson in a pair of cement flippers.

Cameron is left with a choice: endanger both their lives by telling Terrence everything or walk away from the only man he ever loved. The Mafia hustler and the student activist want to find a way to stay together, but first they need to find a way to stay alive.

Chapter 1
Tuesday, June 24, 1969
Terrence Bottom tapped a sandaled foot on the linoleum-tiled floor and bit his lip. Speaking his mind at a Mattachine-New York meeting was a waste of time and energy. But watching the older members of the homophile organization nod their heads in agreement as the speaker droned on about homosexuality being a mental illness had been more than he could take. As the uptight men and women nearby glared at him, he rolled his eyes at Kelsey Ryan and whispered, “You ready to blow this joint?”
Before she could answer, the esteemed speaker concluded his remarks. After a polite round of applause, the well-dressed men and women filled the aisles and chatted as they made for the door of the Columbia University lecture hall where the meeting had been held.
Kelsey and Terrence merged into the slow-moving mass creeping toward the exit. Between reed-thin Terrence’s curly blond hair and Kelsey’s height—never mind that she was built like an offensive lineman for the Washington Redskins—the unlikely pair stood out in the crowd. Rather than the suits worn by other men in the lecture hall, Terrence had on faded bell-bottomed jeans embroidered with flowers, a tie-dyed T-shirt, and a wide white belt with a peace-sign buckle.
“The old guard just doesn’t get it,” Kelsey said, rolling up the sleeves of her oxford shirt to her elbows as she walked. “Working behind the scenes to change the world hasn’t gotten us anywhere.”
“I don’t know about that,” Terrence said, falling in beside her. “Legal challenges to alcohol regulations have helped to crack open the door here in New York.”
“How?” Kelsey shoved her hands into her pockets. “The police have raided every gay bar in town at least once in the last two weeks. Legal victories haven’t stopped them from harassing us every chance they get.”
“Philip and George—”
“Are just like the other men their age working for change.” She shook her head. “They think we should be patient, but my patience has run out. We need new tactics so the world stops seeing homosexuals as mentally ill, morally bankrupt freaks who can’t be trusted to work in the government or around children.”
Terrence nodded. She was on her soapbox now. He didn’t bother reminding her he agreed with her. She was too wound up to stop until she’d said her piece.
“The white men in power aren’t going to give us our rights. We need to stand up and fight for equality, like the Black Panthers or Students for a Democratic Society.” She punched her open palm with a fist. “They didn’t get anywhere until they stood up to the cops. What a fight!”
Despite Kelsey’s pleas, Terrence hadn’t gone uptown with the students in his sociology class last year to show support when the SDS had staged a protest over Columbia University’s backing of the war in Vietnam. Rather than protecting the students, university and law enforcement officials had beaten them with nightsticks and bombed them with tear gas. The sight of his bruised and bandaged classmates afterward had flipped the switch for Terrence. If he hadn’t learned anything else on the streets, he’d learned you fought force with force.
Terrence and Kelsey descended the steps into the subway station to wait for the next train to Greenwich Village. Businessmen, sweating in suits, loosened ties and glared at them. Terrence knew they made quite a pair. He’d toned down his flamboyance some, but next to Kelsey—sturdy, stocky, and rumbling, like a Mack truck—he was the picture of femininity. Despite her efforts to conceal them, her impressive breasts might have been attractive on another woman, but on her masculine frame, they just looked out of place.
“Want to grab a drink at the Stonewall Inn later?” Terrence asked, spotting headlights moving toward the station.
Kelsey snorted. “And would the reason you want to go have something to do with that high-class callboy you’ve been watching?”
Terrence punched her arm. “You don’t know he’s a callboy.” He tossed his hair and smiled. “And he’s watching me. I just happened to have noticed.”
“Who wouldn’t?” She paused, waiting for the noisy train to come to a stop. “The man is gorgeous, and for me to notice is saying something.” They stepped onto the car and the doors squealed shut behind them. “But he’s a hustler, trust me, and he’s working for the mob. I’ve seen him talking to Frankie Caldarone too many times, and he ain’t shining the man’s shoes.”
Terrence led the way to the back of the subway car, and they settled onto the last seats on each side of the aisle. “Frankie Caldarone? The bald-headed goon at the Stonewall Inn?” Terrence crossed his legs and adjusted the forty-inch bellbottoms to cascade in folds above the sandals he wore. “He’s just a bouncer.”
“More like the enforcer, at an unlicensed private club, owned and operated by who?” She spread her legs wide, leaned back, and wove her hands together behind her head.
“Wouldn’t that be whom?” Terrence didn’t want to admit Kelsey could be right. Trading sexual favors for money didn’t bother him so much. Hustling was a dangerous, dead-end job he’d managed to escape more than two years earlier, thanks to Philip and George. Hustling for the mob, however, was a death sentence with no chance for parole, pardon, or escape.
“Either way, the answer is the same.” She shook her head and leaned forward, dropping her hands to her knees. “You’d be smart to stay the hell away from that one.”
“Come on, Kelsey.” Terrence fluffed his hair and adjusted his headband, feeling the embroidered peace sign with his fingers and shifting the band a bit to center the emblem over his nose.
She laughed and punched his arm. “You say that like going out with him is the furthest thing from your mind.”
Terrence gazed at her, wide-eyed. “You know me better than that.”
“Oh, you are so good.” Kelsey shook her head and folded her arms. “I know you all right. Hearing you can’t have something just makes you want it that much more.”
Terrence sat up, turned to her, and put his hand on her knee. “All we have is right now, this very minute. Two minutes from now, this train could crash, killing us both.”
“Shit, Terrence.” She shuddered. “You know I hate the subway.”
His gaze shifted to the window behind her. He stared, seeing remembered faces in the passing blackness. “When you want something, you gotta go for it—before somebody snatches it away from you and it’s gone, forever.” He brushed a fist over his eye and shook his head. “Besides, I’ve never even talked to him.”
“Maybe not, but the way you two look at each other is enough to make me blush.” She chuckled. “I’m just jealous. Hell, I’d pay a year’s tuition to have a pretty girl look at me like that.”
Terrence reached over and tousled her short brown hair. “You’re a good person, Kelsey. If I was a lesbian, I’d be proud to be your girlfriend.” He leered at her and grinned. “Even without those big titties of yours!”
She laughed and reached for her top button. “Careful now, or I’ll turn ’em loose on you.”

About The Author

Michael Rupured has always loved to write. Before learning the alphabet, he filled page after page with rows of tiny little circles he now believes were his first novels, and has been writing ever since. He grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, came out as a gay man in the late 1970s at the age of 21, and considers surviving his wild and reckless twenties to have been a miracle.

In 2010, after more than twenty years in academia, Michael joined the Athens Writers Workshop, which helped him transition from writing nonfiction to writing fiction. Michael writes stories “true enough for government work” about the gay experience in earlier decades that, in addition to entertaining the reader, highlight how far the gay rights movement has come in the last fifty years.  A serial monogamist who is currently between relationships, Michael writes with his longhaired Chihuahua, Toodles, in his lap from his home in Athens, Georgia.

New Cover for Playing For Keeps

Last year I wrote a contemporary menage from a story prompt and titled it, Playing For Keeps. This year I penned the sequel, Keeping Faith. I actually finished the first draft tonight. There is always this rush when I finish writing a story... then I remember that I have to type up, which is usually okay. But since I revise and edit as I type it up, the end result takes a little longer than I'd sometimes like.

But tonight I'm on that "I finished it" high. Doubly so because last night I received the new cover for Playing For Keeps. Breathless Design did a wonderful job with this. It was like she just plucked the image from my head. When I received the mock up I was flailing about, unable to tell or show anybody--which is quite excruciating. I dragged my husband upstairs and made him look because I needed someone to squee with me. Yeah, he didn't squee, but neither did he make fun of me when I was bouncing around him like a puppy mainlining caffeine.

Tonight I wrote The End at the bottom of the page for Keeping Faith. It's the continuation of Trent, Brock, and AJ's lives about six months after they moved to Florida. Now, I have to say this isn't the typical M/M/M story. Definitely not the typical holiday story either. It's a romantic suspense set around the Christmas Holiday. It's not light and fluffy. The title Keeping Faith plays a part in the plot's undercurrent in various ways. I hope readers will enjoy it. With luck, I might have some other good news regarding Keeping Faith but that's a couple weeks away yet.

Oh, and the title for this very short series? Unshakable

GRL Book Signing and Pre-orders

If you're going to the 2014 GRL Chicago then you've probably heard of the pre-sales that many authors and publishers are doing. Holy cow. As a reader, I'm thrilled with the pre-sales because book fairs are where I purchase most of my LGBT paperbacks. I LOVE autographed books plus at the book fairs they can be purchased at a discount. What is not to love about that?

After much consideration, I will be doing pre-sales as well, even though by book title list is that ---> <--- big. If you are going to GRL Chicago in October, until September 20th you can pre-order Alpha Trine and Striker from me and then be able to pick them up at the retreat.

I will bring limited stock to GRL to sell at the normal book fair price.

On a separate note, Less Than Three Press is having a END-OF-SUMMER SALE! GET 20% OFF ALL LT3 STOCKLT3 is throwing an end-of-summer sale! A Lycan descendant of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, Tristan is not as extraordinary as his ancestors. He is an average warrior, unremarkable throughout. But this fact does not trouble him because he has found his Twin Flame, the one person destined to be his, who will love him unconditionally, life after life.

Then his Flame betrays him, leaving him shattered and dying. Brokenhearted, Tristan dissolves the sacred bond and leaves. His best friend, Ushna, accompanies him, vowing to guard and protect him, and Tristan slowly comes to realize that love does not require a sacred bond.

But if he hopes to keep the love he chooses, they will first have to survive ancient secrets, lies, mythical creatures, and the return of absent gods…

Physical Health

I wrote a guest post regarding physical health for Lissa Kasey's blog. I wasn't aware it went up and happened to see it today.  If you're interested, you can read Death By Trainer here
