Soul searching: What do I want? #ION

I have been meaning to write this blog post for a couple weeks now, but I wasn't sure where to start. Currently, I have two series that I'm working on wrapping up.

The Valespian Pact and I.O.N.

In some circles, I.O.N. has been slow to catch on. Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger was a story that I wrote by the seat of my pants, and then later extensively revised it. Then it was followed by Werewolf's Tale and a Druid's Sword, which again I pantsed. I knew where I wanted the series plot arc to go, and I knew the day would be won by a group of friends. But how they would get there kept fluctuating. Then my inspiration got derailed. Some of it came from a personal nature, some of it came from the lack of series sales--which is so unlike me. I don't normally track sales because I'm simply grateful someone bought a book. But I felt like I was treading water and not getting anywhere quick, so I put together and spreadsheet and I wished I hadn't.

I thought some changes were in order. I took a look at my world notes (and honestly, they were really slim, which just goes to show how much I pantsed the stories) and reassessed what needed to happen to complete the plot arc. I'd originally planned for I.O.N. to be six books--four to set up the characters and plot, one to wrap up ,and one to give a certain someone a HEA. I moved the last one to be written as a standalone-- if people were interested in that person's HEA. Then I moved puzzle pieces around and shaved off things that didn't deal with the plot arc. (I was going to show Beck and Diego working cases for I.O.N. and such.) Then I.O.N. was only four books and two of them were already published so that left two to write.

Even though I knew the plot arc and pinpointed things that needed to happen in book three, the romance element was... Stephen was flipflopping on who he liked and didn't like. I personally wanted to stab Grant in the eye so I was looking for a different love interest and eventually landed on a solution. I figured that if the idea didn't work out as I wrote the story, then I would let it work itself out organically (pansting, LOL).

Then I put I.O.N. aside to wrap up Sumeria's Sons and get somethings off my desktop that were finished and just needed some expert advice. Then things got messy, depressing, and last year I temporarily shelved everything I attempted to work on because I wanted to set fire to all of it.

October came around and I was a little excited about writing again, bringing out Bespoken and then writing a couple of Valespian Pact flash fictions that turned into the 3rd book of the series, Constant. To replace the flash fictions, I thought I would write a short blog series called Gentleman's Holiday. I took the assassin for Keeping Faith and thought I'd give a cute fluffy romance and retirement in the I.O.N. world. I thought it would be cool to pants a chapter every week and post it. Well the "fluffy" romance took all kinds of fun turns and I retitled it Assassin's Retirement. This "little" fun blog story rekindled my love for the I.O.N. world. It's really strange because it's like I had forgotten everything I loved about I.O.N. I had all these plans for different standalones that explored the different aspects of this paranormal/urban fantasy world and then it was like they fell off the face of the earth for a couple of years.

The last few weeks,  I've been taking another look at the series and what I wanted to do with it. I am so in love with the characters from Assassin's Retirement that I looked at I.O.N. with new eyes. I dusted off the notes for standalone stories in the I.O.N. world and got excited about them again. I got a story for an I.O.N. profiler, for a man who was accidentally changed into a shifter, and exploring the lore of the Americas... well, you get the point. I had--have--big plans for books that are set in this world and I am chomping at the bit to do some serious world and character building.

I pulled all my notes together over the last couple of weeks and will be making sure all these books will connect, even though they can be read by themselves (all but those in the main I.O.N. series). I will be plotting the books and planning some crossover characters here and there. I'm at the point where I want to share my notes so badly!! There is no one around except my dogs and they sleep through everything I say.

This is what I wanted to write. Something a little different from the norm but still in the same genres that I love. I'd forgotten my own personal "motto" (I can't think of a different word at the moment) Write what I want to read, write what speaks to me, and everything will fall into line.

Now. I just need to write faster... LOL!

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

Book Blast for Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger #giveaway

Book Blast
Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger

I was so caught up with my writing projects that the release of Ruby Red sneaked up on me. Last year there were so many blog tours that I think I was a little burnt out by the end of 2015. Since, my planning for this year has been terrible, I thought I would try something different. A book blast.

Let me tell you a little bit about Ruby Red. You know how I can get about world building. Sometimes there is a picture inspiration and such. I began Ruby Red with nothing. Zilch. It's truly one of those 'make it up as you go along' stories. Ha ha! But the story didn't start out in an Urban Fantasy. Nope.

When I created Beck and Diego, it was a contemporary friends to lovers story that had a misunderstanding as the hump they had to get over. The beginning started with Diego walking down the road with a gas can because his car had stalled. In a fit of anger and rejection, he'd packed all his belongings and was in the process of moving out of the apartment he shared with Beck. They had shared one great night and then Beck disappeared for days. No call. No text. No message or email... and it didn't work. I sort of hated Beck, because how rude, you know? I despised the misunderstanding. I hated the contemporary world because I was bored, bored, bored.

I complained to my husband about it and he asked a simple question. "Does it have to be contemporary?" Well, duh on me. It didn't, and once I moved it over to the UF setting the writing monster took over. When I was almost finished, I was talking to the husband (it's a theme. Everything is bounced off him.) about these amazing moves Diego could do, and he said, "Oh, he's good at parkour?" I was like, "Par-what?" He hooked me up with a couple of YouTube videos and that was all she wrote. I went back to the ms and made some adjustments because, Hell Yes, Parkour!

On a side note, if you're a gamer then you've either heard of or played Assassin's Creed. It's a game that is heavy in parkour and I love it. Some Assassin's Creed fans put together some videos along the parkour lines. These guys are real life parkour athletes. I attached one of my favorite videos for your viewing pleasure.

And back to my story. When I finished, I worried big time about the violence in Ruby Red because Diego was unforgivingly (I know that's not a word) single-minded in his defense and protection of his family and friends. I thought for sure that romance readers would hate the story. On the other hand, my husband loved it. Diego still is his favorite character I've written. When I did the rewrites he was worried I'd change Diego. Nope. He's the same.

That's the skinny on how Ruby Red came about. Thank you for stopping by the blog today. Don't forget to enter the giveaways!

Lead up to the Ruby Red Book Blast & Series Plans

I'm doing something special for Ruby Red this month that will include a giveaway (so make sure to check back on the 18th).

Let me give you a little history on Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger. It has been expanded and re-edited from the original version that was released in 2013. That version was 22k and had been written to meet the specs for a holiday sub call, but didn't qualify. Instead, the publisher accepted the ms to be published after Christmas, so I changed the holiday in the book to match.  The original version was fast paced, speeding through the plot with action sequence after action sequence. For the romance, I started that plotline basically in the middle of the romance because it opens with the sex scene and our two heroes jumping right into the relationship. To do all of that in 22k, there was a ton of telling. I thought the story was missing something. I know there are readers who love the original because it pulled you along through the action and adventure. But the character development wasn't there, in my opinion.

After subbing to LT3, the editor came back with a list of things that could be done to make Ruby Red better, and I agreed. The manuscript went from 22k to 50k. The timeline and events were rearranged. The story starts when Diego was a pre-teen and we get to see his relationship with Denise, Hector, and his parents. We sit with Diego as tragedy strikes his family and he struggles with how he sees his brother verses what others see. We see why Diego decides to pick up the slugger. We are there when he meets Beck for the first time. And... well, you get the idea. All that telling in the original has been moved to showing.

Because the story has been changed, it's not the fast-paced-race-to-the-end story that it once was. The speed has been exchanged to develop the the characters and their relationships with each other. The showing allows you to become invested in them.

I wasn't unaffected either. I loved Diego first and then Beck, but while I was rewriting I fell hard for Hector. Before, he was a plot device, but with the rewriting he came alive for me. I wanted to go all momma bear for him.  Now, I feel deeply about Diego's relationship with Hector.

What do I have planned for the series? The plan is *knocks on wood* for the series to be six books. The challenge and danger Diego and Beck face is huge. In their struggle they will be joined by two other couples who will be introduced in Werewolf's Tale and a Druid Sword. The series will cycle through these three couples to come together in the end to help each other. That's the plan at least. :)

That's the whole ball of wax on Ruby Red. :) Make sure you come back on the 18th and check out the double giveaway.

Release Day! Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger #Excerpt

Today Ruby Red, the extended and re-edited version has released! Whoot!

Today, I'm being hosted by the  QueerScifi Blog. You can also find me on the QSF FaceBook Page and Gayapolis.

I've gotten the question a couple of times from those who've read the original story a few years ago. Has Ruby Red been expanded/re-edited? Yes! The original story was around 22k and this version is around 50k. The timeline and events have been rearranged and all the telling was switched over to showing. The story backtracks to when Diego was a preteen and we see his relationship with his best friend, Denise. You get to meet Diego's brother, Hector, and be there when Diego and Beck met. So much better than the original. The essence of Diego and Beck is the same with Diego struggling with his feelings for Beck. I love the end result of expansion and I think you will, too. ~Lexi

CHAPTER ONE

Diego walked the dreaming. Not the normal everyday imaginings of deep sleep, but the type of dream his abuela whispered of, where the veil of time drew back to show him the future. Unlike a normal dreamscape, where the colors were flat and the people one-dimensional figments of his imagination, here in the dreaming he'd one day be able to walk the scape as events unfolded around real people.

He was barely twelve years old and this was his very first dreaming. Abuela would be proud, and even though he wanted to run and tell her, he had to put his enthusiasm aside and do his duty well. Until the veil dropped back down, he wouldn't be able to pull away from the dreaming. But why would he want to? This was a blessing from the Gods. His responsibility was to watch and learn, but more importantly, he had to remember.

A heavy fog caressed his skin as the mist slid past him. The cold touch caused a shiver to work its way up his spine. He stood in a warehouse, and the concrete had a layer of grit that clung to the bottom of his bare feet. The smell of old oil burned his nose and coated his tongue. No matter how many times he swallowed, the rancid taste clung to his mouth. People clustered around a painted circle in the open area of the floor. Diego recognized many of the gangbangers that belonged to The Man who ruled their streets of East L. A. with an iron fist.

A lead ball formed in Diego's stomach. No one looked at or acknowledged him, but they moved out of his way all the same. Diego's toes butted up against the broad white line. The mark wasn't painted on the floor as he'd first thought, but was chalky, like the powder used to mark a baseball diamond. The noise of the crowd unnerved him. He could see faces of the people, mouths moving exaggeratedly as they spoke, but their voices were odd: their slow, slurred speech made the words almost intelligible. The laughter, though—the eerie cackling skirted over his skin and filled him with dread.

On the other side, the crowd hoisted someone above them. He rode the outstretched arms until he reached the edge of the circle and then they set the person on his feet inside. Diego's brother, Hector, appeared alternatively nervous and excited as he bounced around the interior of the ring on the balls of his feet. Five years older than Diego, Hector was the tallest person in their family, just shy of five foot ten. Diego wanted to have a strong body like his brother's when he was older, but his madre told him Hector spent too much time at the gym and not enough time on his studies to make good grades. Hector claimed he had to be strong to protect their sisters from the vatos. Diego couldn't deny how proud he was when people stepped warily away from the line when Hector bounced close, yelling excitedly at the crowd. His hermano had a reputation for ruthlessness when he defended the familia, and the vatos had learned the hard way to keep space between them and Hector.

Something—someone—stepped into the circle, the figure blurred and wispy-thin as if they were a ghost and not a solid person. Hector halted before the apparition, his expression sobering, his pinky tapping nervously on his thigh. Who would make Hector anxious? Hector was fearless; no one scared him. Well, perhaps there was one person. The Cadillac Man. Now that Diego thought about it, the sensation pressing against his skin wasn't caused by the crowd, but had always been caused by the nearness of the Cadillac Man.

"Hector Emmanuel Hernandez," Diego flinched, shocked Hector had given someone his full name. Their abuela warned to never do so. Names had power and could be used against them. The raspy quality of the voice caused Diego's hair to stand on end. "Do you vow your service unto me, do as I bid of your own free will, and will you be loyal to me in exchange for the safety of your family?"

Hector bobbed his head at each question, bouncing in place. "Yes, sir."

Black smoke drifted from the blurred figure, the tendrils snaking around Hector's ankles. "No," Diego breathed. Something was wrong—he had to stop Hector. He went to step over the line and an electrical current zapped him as he ran into an invisible wall. Blue webbed lines spread out from where he frantically struck the barrier again and again, ignoring the sharp pain in his fists.

"Will you accept the gift of the jaguar, willingly submit to the way of the warriors of old?" The grating voice held an air of expectation.

Diego slammed his fist against the wall. "Hector, no!" he shouted.

"Enter your blood into the book of binding." The apparition held out a large weathered tome several inches thick.

Withdrawing a pocket knife from his jeans, Hector sliced his palm over the yellowed pages. He squeezed blood from his fist while Diego yelled and screamed for Hector to stop. Couldn't he feel the wrongness of this place, in the people surrounding him? Did Hector not see the darkness of the person he was vowing himself to?

"It is done." The finality of the statement was like a punch to Diego's gut.

He didn’t understand what happened, only that Hector had committed to something he couldn’t walk away from. The dark mist swirled around Hector, clinging to his body, stroking him almost lovingly. Without being told, Diego knew it was evil. How could Hector not sense the vileness?

The blurred figure retreated from the circle and the spectators took several steps back. Hector’s smile faltered, but he pumped his fists in the air like a prize fighter. Diego yelled for Hector to run. Something would happen. The tension of the oncoming moment caused his skin to crawl with unease. Hector stopped in the center of the ring and spread his feet, his expression scared but determined. A large jaguar prowled forward, the low growl the only warning before the cat leapt. Hector struggled as he was borne to the ground, screaming while powerful jaws clamped down on his shoulder. The jaguar planted a massive paw in the middle of Hector’s chest as it mauled him.

Diego fell to his knees, desperate to reach Hector but unable to answer his brother’s call for help. Hector fought, but Diego could see how quickly Hector’s strength left him, until he struggled no more. The feline released him, roaring in his face, bloody saliva dripping from its wide jaws. Too much blood pooled around Hector, and his head tilted toward Diego as his body shuddered. Diego pressed against the barrier, the sting no longer registering because he was too wrapped up in his grief as he watched his brother die.

“Diego.” Even though Hector whispered, he heard his name clearly, as if Hector sat right next to him. Hector’s gaze ran along the gathered crowd, eerily coming to rest where Diego knelt. “Lo siento, hermano. I didn’t mean to break my promise,” he rasped.

What's Happening In My Neck Of The Woods

Many different things are going on this week. Ruby Red releases on March 2nd (this coming Wednesday) and I turned in the galley.

There will be two giveaways. A publisher giveaway hosted by Hearts On Fire Reviews starting February 28th. (I'll post the link here on the blog for easy access, as well as Tweet and FaceBook the links.)

On March 2nd, Queer Sci-Fi is hosting me and there will a different giveaway happening (choice of my backlist. I'll also post the link here).

Yesterday, I signed a contract with Less Than Three Press for Death Mask, my submission to their Roughhouse Raiders call. Totally stoked about that. I really loved Death Mask but I was a bit apprehensive at first, but the beta feedback was awesome. Can't wait until it comes out!

I'm commissioning a map for Darksoul. I'm really excited to see the end result. :) (Note: I don't have release info for Darksoul yet. >.< Several things happened to push the editing process back. I'll post updates as they come.) I am also thinking about commissioning Darksoul into audio. I'm still researching the possibility. To be honest, it will depend on cost and whether or not I can afford it. But I'm hopeful. :)

With the exception of four or five days, February has been the month of edits. Yesterday, I received the 2nd round for Werewolf's Tale. I've also seen edits on Darksoul, Ruby Red, Fate & Destinies, Devil's Heart (editing and writing), and pre-sub editing for Death Mask.

I've also been reviewing Releasing Chaos, the last book in the Sumeria's Sons series. I ran into several stumbling blocks last year and I'm hoping the fixes I have in mind will push the project forward to completion. Reviewing has flipped over to editing as I cut out the parts that caused the problems and rewrite them. I'm linear and so I can't start where I stopped without fixing what came before. It helps to rearrange my thoughts and put me on the right path the story needs to go in. A pain in the ass, I assure you, but it's how my brain works.

Oh! I almost forgot. LT3 will be translating both Ruby Red and Werewolf's Tale later this year. That's pretty awesome. They will be the first of my work that's translated and I'm excited to see how the outcome.

Coming Soon: Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger

I have a new release coming up on Wednesday, March 2nd. Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger already has it's first 5 Star pre-release review from Inked Rainbow Reviews. Yay!

Ruby Red is an contemporary Urban Fantasy with a hero who grew up rough and took those lessons with him. Like the reviewer said, there is violence. Unlike a police periodical or a spy story where a certain amount of violence is expected, here it might surprise readers who aren't familiar with the original book. LOL! I'm blaming my husband. He helped me develop Diego, and of all the characters I've created so far, Diego is Jason's favorite. You aught to see him when I mention Ruby Red or Diego. He practically does this fist pump thing and always says Diego is the best.

For those of you who read the original story that was only 22k, it has been revised and doubled in length. The heart of the story is the same, the kinky sex scene is still there, but events have been reordered. The book starts out when Diego is a pre-teen and instead of all the telling I did in the original, here you get to see what happened to make Diego pick up the bat. You get to see how he discovered his kink, when he met Beck, get to know his best friend, Denise. Lots and lots of showing, y'all, and the story is so much better for it. I'm so immensely pleased with the finalized version. And really, the COVER. I just want to say that I love the cover to pieces.

Currently, Ruby Red is up for pre-order at Less Than Three Press's Website at a discount. I'll leave you with the blurb. I'll have a suitable excerpt for next week's posting. :)

Next!! Out With The Old, In With The New #ReleasingChaos

For a good portion of January, I was deep in  first round of edits for the second book of my ION series, Werewolf's Tale and a Druid Sword. The first book in that series, Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger will be released this coming March. Whoot!

So working on the second book (Werewolf's Tale for short because I detest using the initials WTaaDS) was a bit of an eye opener. Between the time submitted and when the ms came back to me, I'd grown--I know this happens. Over time, my writing will improve and will probably change and sometimes it's really evident, to me at least. When I return the manuscript it looks like the scene of a murder. Not that this is a bad thing, just frustrating. Honestly, I think I was spoiled with the ease of all the re-releases last year because the prose had already been picked over with a fine-tooth comb.

The funny thing was that even while I was strangling Werewolf's Tale, I was all like, "Oh, I'd forgotten how much I liked this ION world. I have a partially written standalone in this world that would be a piece of cake to finish in no time. Hot Damn!" BUT I couldn't do anything until I finished Death Mask for the Roughhouse Raiders submission call.

Imagine my excitement when I sent Death Mask out for beta review! Whoot! NEW PROJECT! I love starting new projects. It's almost as fun as going to the book store. Since I'm switching gears, I gather up all my world notes and the binders I hand wrote the majority of the story in, bind them together and put them away.

Then I pulled out the notes for the ION standalone. I don't have a name yet that I like. I've called it The Soul of an Animal Like Me and Soulless, but I don't like either one. Any way, the manuscript sits at 25k and I recall stopping at the halfway point, so piece of ca... Ugh, really?

I began the story 3-4 years ago and it shows. Odd starting point, terrible opening chapter, telling-telling-telling--where-the-hell-is-the showing...

Okay. So that was a no-go because I would basically be rewriting everything. A quicky it would not be. Since it wouldn't be fast and easy, then I pulled out Releasing Chaos, the last book for Sumeria's Sons. I winced when I looked at the date of the last change. I hadn't worked on it since June of last year--with good reason. Something(s) wasn't working and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. But fresh eyes are always good. Time and distance does wonders when figuring out the issues of a manuscript.

Right off the bat, I know I'm going to rewrite the intro scene. I'm hoping that I don't end up chucking all of the 31k, but I did do that with Dragon's Eye... 3 times. So we'll see. With this being the last book of the series, I want it to be the best one of the whole series. When you read  that last page, I want you to think, "Wow! That was so awesome!" Maybe even, "Holy crap, that was messed up!" Or "Why am I crying over an urban fantasy?" With what I have in mind, I think I can accomplish that but the issue is getting what is in my head onto paper--and to stop biting my nails to the quick over something I haven't written yet... LOL!

So Releasing Chaos is officially on the agenda. I'm also working on the first book of a series with Kenzie Cade, Devil's Heart. Sometime or another, I'm expecting edits for Darksoul (Yay!) Between those three February will be full and I'm not complaining. Wish me luck!

Looking Back and Going Forward, Writing Goals for 2016

January of 2015 I set up an "agenda" for the year, and it was the first time I put a plan of action in writing. I was so sure  I could accomplish everything on my list and went forward into the great beyond...

Yeah, not so much.

I did accomplish part of my list, but at the end of the year when I looked back for some reason I felt I hadn't accomplish much. So, before looking forward, I'm going to recount what I accomplished. (This is more for me than anyone else, a trail of positive thinking to help me set up 2016.)

By May 2015, I had somethings marked off. Dragon's Eye was accepted by Less Than Three Press in February, as was the Interlude, A Child's Wish. Also accepted around the same time was the second book in the ION series, Werewolf's Tale and a Druid's Sword.

I was feeling pretty gung-ho and volunteered to write two free stories for the GoodReads M/M Romance group.

After reading a slew of Motorcycle Club books, I approached Kenzie Cade to co-author with me an urban fantasy version, and in June we brainstormed a six book series
with a possible spin-off. On Sept. 1st, we began writing the series, Devil's Dawn.

Around that same time I approached an editor for my poor Fate and Destinies manuscript that had been languishing on my hard drive for over a year. She gave me some great feedback which I'm only part way through establishing because of... stuff. And that stuff kept happening so that I pushed back working on it.

Round midyear I got a bit overwhelmed because I took on too much at once. It was great learning experience, one I will try not to go through again. Less Than Three was awesome and worked with me. Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger which was supposed to release in September was pushed back.

In July, I went to Rainbow Con in Tampa, Florida and met some really great people and was reacquainted with old friends. July was also the month I played catch up, trying to get back on track so I could accomplish the second half of my agenda. That didn't go as I expected.

Releasing Chaos was/is giving me fits, and it was the first time I rued writing a book in first person. I guess you could say that is the issue of being a
pantser instead of a plotter--not being able to foresee all the many details of the final books in a series. But on the flip side, I don't think the ending would have been as good if I set everything in stone from the beginning. On the upside, in November I woke up in the middle of the night with a resolution to a part of Releasing Chaos's problem.

In the meantime, prints were made of the illustrations of the Valespian Pact around the time Alpha Trine and Striker came out
on audio book. I was interviewed for the first issue of the MCB Quarterly. In May, the anthology Keep The Stars Running released. My short story, The Aurora Conspiracy, was included with other fantastic shorts. The anthology went on to receive and honorable mention in the 2015 Rainbow Awards and later tied for first place in the LGTB Anthology / Collection category

In June, Salvaging Toby's Heart was released for the GoodRead's M/M Romance group Don't Read In the Closet event. In December, the book was nominated for Best Sci-fi/Futuristic/Post-Apocalyptic/Steampunk and Best Love is an Open Road Story.

In August, the second DRitC story, Darksoul: Part One was released, and it too received a nomination for the Best Action/Suspense/Adventure story.

I went on and completed Darksoul, moving the story from 44k to 112k. Currently, the manuscript is with an editor. It'll need to also go through proofing and binding before I can self-publish the story in 2016.

Keeping Faith was a finalist for the Best Gay Book in a Series and Playing for Keeps and Keeping Faith released together in the paperback title, Unshakable.

Several of Sumeria's Sons made The Romance Reviews Top Picks and Dragon's Eye made several favorite reading lists for 2015.

If I wanted to look at the bare bones of 2015 releases, the list would look like this:

January - Songs of the Earth
March - A Leap of Faith
March - Audiobook for Alpha Trine
April - Dreams of the Forgotten
April - Unshakable released on paperback
May - Audiobook for Striker
May - Keep the Stars Running
June - Starting Fires
June - Salvaging Toby's Heart
July - Surrounded by Crimson
September - A Child's Wish
September - Darksoul: Part One
October - Dragon's Eye

Okay. Wow. I have no idea why I was thinking I hadn't accomplished much. What a busy year!

Now the question is, what will happen in 2016?

In this first quarter, Darksoul: The Complete Novel will be self-published. The Novel will have both part one and two published together in one volume. There were changes made to the first part of the book, additional information, changes made to race names, and such, as well as the last couple of chapters moved further back in the story.

This is where I'm laughing at myself because I thought that self-pubbing would be quicker, but honestly, not so much. It's been a learning process and I don't see myself doing this very much in the future. I like spending my time writing. :)

Ruby Red is back on the release schedule! Whoot! It is now up on the LT3 Press website for pre-order, releasing on March 2, 2016.

Talking about adding to a story. Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger started out around 22k. I'd originally wrote it for a holiday sub call, and it wasn't accepted because it was part of a series but was published separately. Shortly after it was originally released, the publisher went out of business. LT3 accepted the little guy, but while going through edits, there were several suggestions made that I agreed with. The story grew from 22k to 49k. In order for me to spend time on it, things were pushed around last year. Even though I was a little harried at the time, I'm glad I took the time because the story is so much better than it was.

As I'm typing this up, book two in the ION series, Werewolf's Tale and a Druid Sword is waiting for me to get back to editing it.

What else is on the 2016 "agenda"?

Everything above the green line is what I would like to definitely accomplish this year.

Death Mask is due in for the sub call at the end of the month. Fingers crossed. I'm not quite finished. I've been trying to work on it while editing Werewolf's Tale but honestly, the editing has been taking up my time. ION 2 needed some serious TLC. I'm praying that everything about Death Mask will fall into place later this month. Seriously, it's bad form to not submit a story to the sub call you asked your publisher to do. :)

Once Death Mask is off my plate, I'm going back to Releasing Chaos. I'm 30k into the story and I think I know what needs to be done (deleted) to get the story past this part. The good news is the last interlude is complete. I need to edit it and such, but short story is close to being ready to submit.

The first book in the series, Devil's Dawn, that I'm writing with Kenzie Cade is almost finished. If we pushed, it could be finished before the end of February.

Fate and Destinies will be brought off the back burner. The changes from 1st to 3rd person completed and I'll be able to hand it over to the editor. (Someone please say, "About time, woman!")

Then comes the third book in the Valespian Pact. Is it crazy that writing this book scares me the most? I have a bare bones outline of what needs to happen in Bespoken, but I couldn't hear Prometheus's voice. Without that voice, the story would've been flat. The last week or so, he's been talking, which is excellent.

The rest of what is above the green line will come after the projects above are completed. I won't be participating in the DRitC event this year. If I get a wild hair then I can put that energy into anything below the green line. I'm pretty sure Wolfe's story will get told. Honestly, Salvaging Toby's Heart practically wrote itself. Oh! I'll give you a bit of information on my sci-fi stories, Salvaging Toby's Heart and Darksoul and The Aurora Conspiracy takes place in the same universe. So you might see some character crossover.

That's it! That is what I would like to accomplish in 2016. The little whiteboard will be marked up by midyear but did you know that there is a bigger board? Would you like to see what the next few years could bring? Haha! :)

Back on the Release Schedule: Ruby Red Booty Shorts And A Louisville Slugger

Whoot! Ruby Red is back on the release schedule for LT3 Press!

Originally, it was slotted for fall of 2015 but during the editing process the story went from 22k to 49k. About that same time, everything (I) went a little haywire. LT3 graciously asked if they could help (for which I'll ever be grateful) and Ruby Red's release was moved.

Now it's back and thanks to the editors at LT3 Press so much better than before. The new release date is March 2, 2016.

Blurb:

But the peace is easily shattered, as he's learned all too well, and this time it's ruined by the arrival of a mysterious package and dangerous men bent on violence.

Where Did The Time Go? Putting My Head Down and Just Go

The last thirty days have been hectic. March, April, most of May... they all went smoothly. Projects came in and left, smoothly. My free story, Salvaging Toby's Heart was turned in ahead of schedule. Releasing Chaos was (still) giving me problems. Sometimes it helps to put a manuscript aside for a couple of weeks and let it rest. So that is what I did, and I picked up a reopened story prompt from GR and started on Darksoul.

Then everything hit at once near the end of May. I forgot I had a July release and hadn't made any plans. So I scrambled and prepared to answer interview questions or write blogs posts--I had to limit it to 20. I'd sent Fate & Destinies off to be edited--that was a mess because I'd forgotten I'd lost info in a computer crash. The ms had been on the hard drive for a year and a half and all I could remember was that I needed to review it before sending it away.

Laugh My Ass Off. Not really. I had to pull it back and schedule time for me to re-edit it because the last half was messed up. (Actually, at the time I had a small panic attack and here's why.) The final edits for Salvaging Toby's Heart came in and a day later I received edits for Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger. There was a blog tour that last week of May for the Valespian Pact audiobooks. Don't forget that I was also supposed to be working on Darksoul which has a due date of July 13th. AND a little over a week later I was supposed to be headed out of town to meet with an author who I'd planned on penning a series with (and hop over to see my sister since I was only 400 miles away).

After I freaked the hell out, I rearranged my priorities. Fate & Destinies was put on the back burner--again. Salvaging Toby's Heart made it back to the editor and was actually released like two weeks later. I started working on the July blog tour stuff. Darksoul was put on hold, and I had hoped that I would be able to jump on it after returning back home. And I worked on the edits for Ruby Red thinking I could have that finished before I left... and maybe not.

Because Ruby Red was a re-release, I didn't read the comments first. I just jumped in and did a linear edit. I expected to be in and out. The very last comment had the editor's suggestions for the whole story. See! That is what happens when I deviate from a previously established working pattern. I could've save myself four days of editing! Anyway. I agreed with the editor's suggestions, which meant a reorder of events and lengthening the story. Ruby Red would not be finished before I left home. Rats! Rats! And more Rats!

Needless to say, I was still feeling a bit overwhelmed when I left. I had hoped to work on some things while gone, but as it turned out, Kenzie Cade and I worked our butts off for 3 1/2 days. Then the three days I spent with my sister was all family packed. The upside, I was able to relax a bit, and when I came home I delved back into Ruby Red and was able to turn it back in this past Monday. It went from 23k to 47k and I'm still anxious over it. I can't even describe how I feel about it because usually I sit on something then edit it again and have 4-6 people beta it and then edit it again. I'm worried that I missed something or... something. It's a weird feeling that even now, two days later, I'm still feeling. Well... Onward!

I'm almost done with the required blog posts for the Surrounded by Crimson tour. Yay. And for the last two days I've been reviewing what I had on Darksoul.

Now, the hazard of putting something off to the side in the middle of writing the story is that I now I don't like the direction the plot is going. It was fine before, but I've had time to mull over options. The direction the story now wants to take is one that I'm not sure I have time to write. I leave for Rainbow Con July 15th I have to prepare for the nine panels that I'm sitting on. I would like to have a few things put together beforehand, but if I'm going to finish Darksoul by July 13th then I will have some very looooonnnnngggg writing days.

There are days that I wish I was better at writing shorter stories. I struggle to keep the shortest of them around 30k. Something is always missing. If I didn't care about making the story well rounded then I'd just throw something together and walk away.

But I can't.

I won't.

I agonize over every detail, over the romance arc, the plot arc, is it all plausible, believable? Are the characters cardboard or are they dimensional? Is the story compelling? Did I hit all of the Dear Author requests? Do I like it? Will the reader like it? I will squeeze the plot and characters around until they all fit together and then my story looks like it'll to end up being around 50k (if I'm lucky) which means I have to write 3500 (or more if if I want sufficient time to edit the story before turning it in) everyday for the next fifteen days.

So you guys wish me luck, because I'm going to need it!
