Something To Talk About: July Reading #Bookshelf

I spent the majority of this week at a family reunion at a camp/RV resort near-ish to Kansas City, Missouri. The cabin was cute and came with air conditioning (thank God) but we spent the days outside in the sweltering heat and humidity. This was the first road trip we have taken the dogs on. Dyson acted better than I thought he would. My meet & greet Hoover, not so much. With so much strange, Hoover thought everyone was a threat to us and it took him time to understand we were just fine.

I wasn't sure if I should be annoyed or relieved that the WiFi for the resort only worked occasionally. Between that and the poor cell service in the area I barely got on social media. I missed seeing what friends were up to, but honestly, the rest of the negative crap I didn't miss at all.

I've been home all of 36 hours and I practically hopped back into editing Releasing Chaos after the suitcase was unpacked. I'm going on another trip this coming Thursday (no husband or dogs this time) and I need to get the book to beta readers before I leave.

In the meantime, here's the fun post about what I've read this month.

Pirate of Fathoms Deep is the second book in Megan Derr's Tales of the High Court. Lesto the pushy, bossy second to the High King has met his match in Shemal.

Shemal is a... recovering pirate, trying to turn over a new leaf when a couple of idiots kidnapped Lesto and dumped him on Shemal's front lawn. These two have a history that can either complicate the matter or make the situation one of serendipity.

This was a fantastic read that I've reread more than once and made me smile. Love Lesto and Shemal together. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I've read and loved everything by Lyn Gala and so when I noticed Deductions on Loose ID's coming soon page the count down began.

This is an urban fantasy where the world knows there is magic and magic wielding people. A peaceful balance is precarious and in order to police the magic population there is a branch in the FBI that employs a Talent team, including a non-magical human.

Darren is that human and he's fallen in love with the team leader, the shaman Kavon. The only problem is they can never have a intimate relationship because shamans have to have certain kind of magical partner to balance their power. As a plain old human, Darren doesn't meet the requirement, but that doesn't dampen Darren's feelings. But not all is what it seems and as things unfolds the story gets better and better. There is a complexity to Gala's worlds that always captivates me. Her characters are relate-able even though the setting is fantasy. The next book, Derivation, came out while I was melting in the heat. I'll be taking it with me on my next trip. :)

I don't read many contemporaries. I need a balance between the romance and a plot arc that isn't about the relationship. I need other things to be going on.

To be honest, I bought this one because I liked the cover and then I forgot about it. I was going through my kindle and it kept coming up. I went back several times to reread the blurb, see-sawing back and forth about whether I wanted to try it. July was the month where for every good book I read, I set aside six that weren't for me. I hate wasting my reading time because I only have so much in a week's time.

Once I started Absolution, I was captured. Shadow group of assassins that deliver vigilante justice? Awesome. Jonas, is the target with a questionable background, but for some reason the assassin, Mace, can't pull the trigger. A former Navy SEAL, Cole, who is looking for answers about his sister's death throws a wrench into the situation. The story totally delivered on the promise laid out in the blurb. I devoured the book and jumped to the next two.

Salvation and Retribution are about different characters, but the people from the prior books play a part in the stories. By the end, I still couldn't get enough. I searched through Sloane Kennedy's backlist and cackled with glee because there was plenty of stories to choose from. Reading up on her stories, I found they were all interconnected through cross over characters and I chose a couple to start out with. But I'm really, really looking forward to the next installation to the Protectors series. Since Retribution came out earlier this month, it'll probably be a while but with her nice sized backlist I can catch up on her world.

F*ck Forgiveness is a re-release. I read the original version awhile ago and loved it. When I read more word count was added, I bought the new version.

I liked this just as much as I did the first time I read the story. It's short but was able to pack a punch without leaving me feel as something was skipped over. I'm thrilled there will be more in the series.

Along the shifter vein but leaning more towards sci-fi is Maze For 3. Set in a post apocalyptic world that has made contact with aliens. The cities have a great amount of advanced technology. There the aliens live along side the humans, not quite fitting in.

Even though the land outside the metro areas are practically wastelands, people scrape by making a living. Miah has his degree and a plan to change the lives of the people but is injured right before he has to go home. The two aliens he met want to help him, hoping that Miah will fall in love with them. But they have secrets and Miah's dreams sit on the precarious edge of failure...

Great story and I look forward to the second book in the series.

I read the first book to the series last year. I developed a soft spot for a side character, the little troll Fred. Life happened and when I turned back around, there were another six books out in this series. Seriously, that some fast work. I read through them this month. Different kinds of shifters from gargoyles to squirrels, this series runs the gamut of the familiar to the not so familiar with a light quirky humor. Plus the whole series is menage(+). Yay for me!

Besides Fred remaining a side character through the series, the human from the second book, A Dragon's Destiny became another favorite. I found Samuel to be adorable. With Vincent and Desmond at odds because Desmond doesn't want to have a mate, the... I want to say Samuel's sweetness but I'm not sure that is accurate. Samuel is naive and innocent and is the glue that brings Vincent and Desmond together. This series is mpreg so the less dominate mates do get pregnant in each book. In this one, I was shocked into laughing out loud because I didn't expect things to go the way they did. This is a fun and quirky humored series that I've really enjoyed. A Dragon's Destiny is one of my favorites because of, you guessed it, baby dragons and Samuel. Plus there were times through the series the Fred really rocked.

This is one of my favorite series that I own in all forms, ebook, paperback, and audio. Well, not audio for Cosmic Inception because it just released, but I will.

I'm thrilled to finally get the story of Nick and Fieo who've been dancing around each other for the last two books. I loved how different Nick was from the other humans and how hard Fieo worked to care for Nick. There is a lot going in with this plot that kept me on the edge of my seat and cussing when I had to put it down because my reading time was over. Poor Jason, I kept insisting it was time for him to go to bed because I wanted to read more of my reward. (yes, there are some days that the rewards I give to myself help me get through the work day. :) ) I loved this from beginning to the end and I hope there is more to come.

Well, I hope you enjoyed the list. Everything here I'd highly recommend. I supposed I should get back to work. :)

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

Blog Tour: Finding Love by Gigi Kern #giveaway

FLbanner

Welcome all!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Gigi Kern author of Finding Love

Hi Gigi, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Do you write on a typewriter, computer, dictate or longhand?

85 percent of the writing I do is longhand.  I found when writing my novel, supernatural thriller, that I could think and write faster writing longhand vs thinking and typing.  Plus, I found by writing longhand, it helps keep continuity of thought and stops me from editing along the way.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?
Yes, Finding Love is the second book in the Finding Home series.  It’s about creating your own family and how home is more than just a house.  The series starts with Aaron finally finding a family of his own, and finding love with TJ.  The series expands to include the family Aaron creates and those connected the awesome Foster family.

What are your thoughts on writing a book series.
As a reader I enjoy reading books in a series.  Funny, when the idea comes to me, I know if it will be a series and the number of books in the series.  I think my experiences as a reader impact how I see writing.  In recent years, I have read great books in a series that fall flat at the end, or off into left field.  So, I try and connect the characters and will try to introduce them prior to their own book or connect them to a character from a previous book so the reader can feel the connection with those characters.

Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?
I think the cover does play a role in the buying process.  As an avid reader, the book cover draws me in leading me to read the book description.  I personally make an effort to read the book descriptions for book covers that don’t appeal to me just so I don’t loose out on a great book.

What is your favourite quote?
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
--Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken

BLURB

Aaron is in love with his new boyfriend TJ and living with his best friend Ryan. Life is perfect. Right?

Except his past rears its ugly head threatening everything he has and ever wanted.

Now that would be the end of his story, but ever since Aaron met the Fosters and his hot boyfriend TJ, his luck has changed! Dreams really do come true!!

Shush it's a secret... I know the writer of Finding Love, and she told me...

"When I originally came up with the idea for Finding Love, this is what I had in mind...

Yes I didn't see everything at the time. But I did see their first time. And the anxiety Aaron would have. And I knew that TJ's friends wouldn't "get" their relationship. But I didn't see Rick giving the "talk". Awesome right!

I'd tell you more, but I think the author is on the look out. She promised me to secrecy. But how could I not share right!!

Disclaimer: Because of Aaron's cuteness, TJ's hotness, Ryan's awesomeness and David being David, please Read Book# 1 Finding Aaron first. How else can you fall under their spell.

EXCERPT

Focusing solely on Aaron, he manhandled him as gently as he could. Over the past several months of his and Aaron’s relationship TJ noticed that the trust Aaron had in him not to hurt him was mind-blowing. It was his touch, sight unseen sometimes, that would always center and calm Aaron. Knowing this, TJ always tried to use this sparingly and held it in the reverence it deserved. Ryan, Aaron’s best friend and TJ’s nephew, didn’t even have this ability.

Gently pulling Aaron out of the recliner, TJ maneuvered himself behind Aaron and unceremoniously plopped down into the chair. Slowly TJ repositioned Aaron and seconds later Aaron was in TJ’s lap and they were cuddling.

Yes, CUDDLING. It was a major shock to TJ and everyone around him that he actually liked to cuddle. Yet again another revelation these past few months brought as TJ descended into the rabbit hole that was “Aaron Samuel” and found it got more intriguing by the day.

Wrapping his arm around Aaron’s slim shoulders brought the needed warmth to Aaron’s shivering body.

“Aw, look how cute and comfy the two resident lovebirds look,” David said with a snicker as he draped the blanket across Aaron’s lap and chest.

Title: Offside
Series: The Darthmouth Cobras, 4
Author(s): Bianca Sommerland
Length: 528 pages
PublisherBianca Sommerland (March 25, 2013)

Genre:  Romance / Contemporary / Sports / Poly / BDSM /

Notes: As far I know, these can be read as standalones. I guess I'll see when I get a chance to dig into it.

Blurb: A pace ahead of the play can send you back to the start. And put everything you’ve worked for at risk.

Single mother and submissive Rebecca Bower abandoned her career as a sports reporter to become a media consultant with her brother’s hockey team. A failed marriage to a selfish man makes her wary of getting involved with another. Unfortunately, chemistry is hard to deny, and all her hormones are dancing when she gets close to the Cobra’s sniper, Scott Demyan.

Zachary Pearce ‘came out’ to the world last season to shift attention away from a teammate. And his one night with Scott Demyan had been unsettling. There could be more there, if only Scott was a different person. Instead, a night of sensual BDSM play with Becky leaves him wanting more, but she thinks he’s gay and questions his interest. It’s been a long time since a woman has attracted him both as a man and a Dom, and he’ll do everything in his power to prove she’s the only one he needs. Or wants. His one time with Scott was a mistake.

Scott might have forgotten what happened in his childhood, but the effects linger, and he specializes in drunken one-night stands…until he meets Zach and Becky and sees what he’s missing. But neither one believes Scott can be faithful. Although he’s trying hard to clean up his act to avoid getting kicked off the team, they want more from him. He’s willing to make changes, but the most important one—putting their happiness before his own—means he’ll probably end up alone.

Warning

This e-book contains material not suitable for readers under 18. It also contains scenes that some may find objectionable, including BDSM, ménage sex, bondage, anal sex, sex toys, and one man erroneously labeled as vanilla. Author strongly advises care be taken when using ladders and gym equipment in ways other than originally intended. And sex on cruise ships whenever possible. The author advises that as well.

Notes

Blurb: He thought love was impossible, until his cull’s dying wish...

London, 1809. Incubus demon and male prostitute Damon Snow thinks he has the world figured out. Love only exists in rich poets’ imaginations and all any man wants from him is a quick romp. But when his long-time and dying patron forces Damon to investigate true love, he discovers that love may be possible for those lucky few — and that possibly, just possibly, love is possible for him too.

***

Damon Snow and the Nocturnal Lessons (Book 1)

In the dark world of Regency molly houses, love can’t be possible – can it?

Damon Snow thinks he has the world figured out. As an incubus demon and male prostitute, the world is a cruel, dark and lonely place where men only want one thing.

When his long-time patron Byrne discovers he's dying, Byrne offers to leave his entire fortune to Damon.

There's only one catch: Damon has to investigate and write about the reason another patron Price visits him. Easy – the same reason as all men.

But what starts as an easy assignment turns into an impossible secret, the last thing Damon would ever suspect. If men only want one thing, how can one possibly fall in love?

***

Damon Snow and the Incubus Rake (Book 2)

In the dark world of mollies and incubi, who can Damon really trust?

Incubus and prostitute Damon Snow wants nothing more than a repeat of his last fateful visit with his long-time patron Byrne. Not that he’d actually admit that. Week after week, Byrne’s door remains closed, until Damon discovers he’s not the only one paying Byrne a bedside visit.

Even Damon’s only friend Rogers seems ready to discard him if he ever does get into Damon’s pantaloons.

So when a dapper rake reveals himself as an incubus and offers to teach Damon how to bend men to his desires, Damon is quick to take him up on his offer, even if it means breaking a few of his own rules.

But the rake has a secret of his own, and men keep disappearing around him. In a world of only users and the used, who can Damon really trust?

***

Damon Snow and the Viscount Temptation (Book 3)

In a world of buyers and the bought, can Damon afford to choose love?

The only thing incubus and prostitute Damon Snow wants for his dreaded “twenty-first” birthday is to spend the day at Byrne’s bedside. But Byrne is growing ever more distant.

Claiming it’s due to his ongoing struggle with his business partner, Viscount Ashton, Byrne assigns his next lesson: Damon will seduce Ashton into ceding to Byrne.

Damon desperately needs the extra money. As much as he’d prefer to stay in Byrne’s bed, he can’t refuse, and seducing the wanton creature he’d seen so many years ago seems easy enough.

But when the viscount offers Damon the respectable and lucrative position of valet, it comes with one catch: he’ll never see Byrne again. When it seems like even Byrne regards Damon as little more than a whore to be bought, can Damon afford the choice?

***

Damon Snow and the Nocturnal Confession (Book 4)

In a world of incubi and unicorns, there must be something capable of curing Byrne… right?

For months, incubus and prostitute Damon Snow has been given assignments from his long-time cull and now lover Byrne. But after Byrne nearly dies and they travel to Bath to take the waters, Damon assigns himself one of his own:

He must find a supernatural creature capable of curing Byrne.

But when Damon once again encounters the incubus Frost, Frost taunts him with the truth ― Byrne isn’t dying from natural causes. Damon’s touch is killing him.

Damon has to find a cure, and fast, even if he must break propriety and sanity to do so. But can he go so far as to confess he’s an incubus knowing he’ll lose Byrne forever?

I followed my hot professor on a research trip to a mountainous island in the middle of freaking nowhere because of a stupid schoolgirl crush and because hey, it was something to do. When hot prof turns out to be not so hot for me, my search for a quiet place sends me to a hidden cave in the woods. Little did I know that a storm on the lake would fling me into a dangerous and different world. One where raw, tough warriors threatened my life, and a sexually tense, axe-wielding woodsman from my wildest fantasies would toss me over his shoulder—barbarian style.

I had no idea where I was or how to get home, but hey, why the hurry? Filthy talking McLumberpants was hot, severe, dirty as all hell, and while we were completely different people, we had one thing in common. Complete lust for one another—that got completely out of control.

But when lightning hits again, opening a path to home, I had to wonder… where, exactly, was that?

Randal Tobit has recently taken over his father’s shoe store, On Your Sole, and is trying to make his father proud after his recent divorce from a woman his dad liked. The job is easy, but only because of the man his father hired and will not give Randal permission to fire under any circumstances.

Casey is helpful and happy, bordering on obnoxiously so. He’s a morning person and he loves shoes, which makes him perfect for the store, but not so much for Randal, who prefers to be barefoot when he can’t wear flip flops.

When the store is vandalized and Casey offers his help, Randal makes a bargain with him—one that he probably would have reconsidered if he’d had any idea what Casey actually was…

PublisherStephenson & Fletcher; 1 edition (December 24, 2014)

Genre:  Erotic Romance / Poly / Sci-Fi / Aliens /

Notes: Found this one when I was searching for poly reads. What sealed the deal for me was in the blurb. "...no matter how ugly her human appearance." Because really, aliens aren't going to find us attractive and that the author went there intrigued me. I want to see where it goes.

Blurb: "She is mine to protect, mine to shelter, mine to feed and mine to cover. When she is weak, I shall be her strength. She was stolen from her world by our captors. Now her survival is my responsibility. It is her duty to endure my lust, respect my nest mates and honour our union with offspring. I revere this giver of life, as is the way."~ Venomous One, formerly of Rök, enslaved gladiator

"Six things a woman should not have to deal with: 1) More than one barbaric alien lover/life mate. 2) Long term stay on a slave planet where you’re one female amongst thousands of 'needy' males. 3) Killer space pirates. 4) Psychotic mother-in-law. 5) Putting your alien lover/life mates’ species under the threat of annihilation because you ticked off the wrong Slave Chieftain. 6) A marauding overlord with a harem four hundred strong who is determined to make you concubine number four hundred and one. My name is Lumen. I am stranded in a galaxy far, far away and here be huge f***ing aliens."~ Lumen Young, formerly of Earth, lost in space

Abducted from Earth and transported to a slave planet in an unknown galaxy, Lumen finds herself, shackled, naked and put on display before an alien horde. Told the males will battle for the right to slake their lusts with her body, she would become the slave of slaves. Venomous One, a proud warrior enslaved, has given up hope of returning to his home world and finding a life mate. When a female is tossed into the arena his soul demands he claim her. Winning his mate by Right of Might, he vows to protect Lumen and be a good provider, no matter how ugly her human appearance. Rescued by Venomous’ people, the couple face space pirates, the condemnation of an alien government, galactic war, and a deadlier threat from within the warrior’s own kindred.

Warning: violence, profanity and sexual situations with multiple partners.
