Playing Catch-Up With a Small Excerpt from Dragon's Eye (Sumeria's Sons, #5)

While Darksoul was out with beta readers last week, I began going through the edits for Dragon's Eye. It has been sitting on my computer patiently waiting for me since the beginning of July.

I was a little nervous about these edits because 1) it's not a re-release and so the edits wouldn't be as easy as the first four books in the series. 2) This is the first story I wrote after my father passed and I remember crying all of the time while I wrote the first half. I also remember that it was hard for me to put words on the page but I made myself do it. Shoot I had conversations during that time, to this day I still don't recall them. For a combination of reasons, I began to wonder if I shouldn't have held onto the manuscript for a couple of months after I thought I was finished.

So unease was eating at me when I opened the manuscript and started going through the editor's comments. Last month I reworked and extensively extended Ruby Red Booty Shorts and A Louisville Slugger. I feared I'd find the some of the same problems here. With the way my summer was going I wasn't going to discount anything.

But it seems that Chapter 4 is the problem child and that is where I've spent the last several days. Lots of confusion and the order of events that gave important information was screwy. I ended up extending the chapter to fix all of the problems and I think I have it taken care of. I passed over into Chapter 5 yesterday, so with luck the rest will be smoother to go through.

I'm not happy with some of the writing in other sections. I hear that is a common author thing but it doesn't mean I have to like it. So I'm tweaking as I go along because really, sometimes I use twice the number of words to say something really simple. This annoys me and I need to break myself of the habit. ^_^

If you're wondering what the release date for Dragon's Eye will be, October 7th. The other day I got to peek at cover... very cool, you guys. Very cool.

So I'm going to cut my rambling off and leave you for a small excerpt from Dragon's Eye from Ushna's POV. Enjoy!

Tristan grappled with me trying to get away, and somehow, I knew if he escaped, he'd be lost to me. All the anger I'd packed away at the injustice of what happened—to Tristan, to our family; Theo's betrayal, false Twin Flames, assassins, even the unfairness of Brian's untimely death—all the rage that had been bubbling under the surface seethed within me at the thought of losing Tristan, after being so patient and working so hard to have him in my life.

Now, he walked a tightrope between his many lives, and even though Tiamat had returned him, I may yet still lose him to the insanity of the lives that had come before. When his parents had died, I waited to tell him that I loved him. I returned to college to finish my degree. After graduation, I arrived home only to discover he'd met his Twin Flame. I tried to be happy for him, for the gift he'd been given, but I scented he hadn't been claimed by Theo and watched how unhappy he steadily grew. I waited. Looking back, I should've stepped forward and fought for him then, but I believed they'd eventually balance out and I'd spend my life hating Theo for having what I wanted.

And yet, they hadn't balanced and Theo's actions had actually freed Tristan. I took him, barely alive and breathing, from Tribe Enkidu, from the family and people who didn't see him. No one did. Only me, it was only ever me—and perhaps Brian—who'd really seen Tristan. I became his anchor, his touchstone, taking care of him until he could do so himself.

Years. I spent years being patient, waiting, yearning, watching until the day he'd seen me. He finally claimed me, but really, I'd been his all along. Even at the beginning, believing Brian was my Twin Flame and that one day I'd claim him, he and I always spoke of making a life together with Tristan. Now I knew we were more than Twin Flames and someone had spent hundreds of years trying to keep us apart. Once again, here we were with one more thing attempting to put a wedge between us, only this time it was the memories of what once was.

I'm Late! I'm Late! Darksoul: Part One

I'm so relieved. I turned in Darksoul to the moderators for the GoodReads MM Romance group on July 27th.

But I was technically late.

When I picked up the extra story prompt in May they gave me a generous two months to write the story. July 13th was the due date and I thought it would be a piece of cake! Wow. I really jinxed myself because not long after, everything came in at once and I had to put the story on hold.

At the beginning of July I realized I needed more time, but I wasn't sure if I would get it because it was so late in the game. The Mods worked with me and they gave me a couple of extra weeks. Right before I went to Rainbow Con I made a decision. At 43k the story was only half finished, so what I did was make sure our MCs were together, gave a hint of what was still to come, and turned in Darksoul: Part One. I hated doing that but I overextended myself. If I only had this story to work on in that sixty day period it would've been easy to finish the 100k, but it didn't work out that way.

The plan is that once I finish with the edits for Dragon's Eye, Sumeria's Sons #5, I'll return to and work on the second half of Darksoul. I'll probably self publish the complete novel in the fall/winter. It's going to be awesome. ^_^

In other news: The Surrounded By Crimson blog tour is going on. Just in case you missed what happened yesterday on the blog tour...

Oops! I forgot! Surrounded By Crimson, Darksoul, and Dragon's Eye

Can you believe that I forgot that the Surrounded By Crimson blog tour started today? I've been working on edits for Darksoul: Part One and Dragon's Eye since I returned from Rainbow Con and lost track of time. Like a whole week of time. The I saw a tweet this morning, and whoops! I put off breakfast so that I could play catch up.

Once I get caught up with the posts I'll finish submitting Darksoul to the GR group and get back to working on the edits for Dragon's Eye (Sumeria's Sons, #5)

Dragon's Eye, you ask? Why yes the next book in the series is in the first round of edits. If you weren't aware already, the release date is October 7th. :) I was talking to the cover artist the other day and with luck I'll have a shiny new cover to show off!

Any how, it's time for me to go back to work, after breakfast, of course. Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

AboutTheBook

Title: The Baker

Series: Workplace Encounters

Author: Serena Yates

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Cover Artist: L.C. Chase

Length: 40000 words

Release Date: July 15, 2015

Blurb: Ian Wallace works as a baker for his tyrannical father in their family owned Scottish Bakehouse in Casper, Wyoming. He wants to represent the bakery in the upcoming Tartan Day competition, but his father refuses to reveal the secret ingredients that make them so successful—unless Ian gets married and has a son, proving he is fit to continue the family line.

Just before New Year’s Eve, Cameron Lewis, a former Marine turned police detective, comes into the bakery for donuts for his department and some black buns for himself. Cameron is hooked, and as his visits become more frequent, they stir Ian’s father’s suspicions. But threats can’t stop Ian from donning his kilt and entering the competition anyway—to show his father what he can do on his own. Though he might not have the secret ingredients, Ian and Cameron might still discover a recipe for happiness.
CommonExcerpt

Just before nine things had slowed down to a manageable level, and Ian was about to take a short restroom break, leaving the store to Senga. But then the doorbell tinkled yet again, and the most gorgeous man Ian had ever laid eyes on walked into the store. He was tall, probably over six feet, had blond hair in a ruthless buzz cut, and his warm brown eyes invited Ian to trust him. The man was well built, muscular like a Marine, and wore a smart dark green suit, covered by an open black winter topcoat. His facial expression seemed guarded but curious as he looked around the store. Ian had the strangest feeling he was cataloging exits and potential sources of danger.

Thank God Senga was busy with a group of women unable to decide what they wanted so Ian had an excuse to talk to the guy.

“What can I do for you, sir?” Ian’s voice sounded suspiciously hoarse, and for the briefest moment, a spark of heat appeared in Mr. Good-looking’s eyes.

“I’ve never been to this bakery before….” The stranger trailed off as he examined Ian with the same curiosity and concentration he had used to assess the shop.

I know you haven’t. I’d definitely remember you!

“A colleague at the station recommended your stuff, so I came to have a look.” The stranger tilted his head. “You’ll probably laugh, since this is such a cliché, but I’m looking for donuts.”

“Station? Donuts?” Ian’s brain refused to function for a moment.

“Yeah, I’m a cop. Well, a detective actually, but it doesn’t seem to matter. I love donuts, and so do my colleagues.” The stranger laughed, and the deep, resonant sound thrilled Ian to his core.

“Ah. Right, well, we do sell donuts.” Ian pointed to the display. “It’s not a great selection, since most customers seem to come here for the more Scottish specialties, but I hope you can find some you like.”

“I’ll take two dozen, please.” Mr. Detective smiled. “And what else do you think I should get so my colleagues can find out about your wonderful work? It does smell amazing in here.”

“Thank you.” Ian started to put the donuts into a box and, without thinking, blurted out the first thing he could think of. “Would you like to try my buns?”

“Your… buns?” Mr. Detective’s eyebrows rose, a twinkle appeared in his eyes, and an amused smile curved his dark red lips.

“Yes. The black ones.” Ian pointed at the cakes, only to realize what the stranger must have meant when the man couldn’t stop grinning. Heaven above, was the gorgeous specimen of male beauty gay? But who else would have gotten the joke? Not that Ian had meant it as a joke. He was deep enough in the closet he didn’t know how to begin looking for the door, never mind find it. He definitely wouldn’t mind trying if this guy were on the other side, waiting for him. But Mr. Detective probably wasn’t out either, even if he were gay. A gay cop, or detective, wouldn’t make it out here in the wilds of Wyoming. Ian could feel himself blush even as he realized he was now babbling in his own head.

“Oh, I see.” Mr. Detective bent toward the black buns and grinned. “They look kinda cute. Are they as Scottish as they look with that flag painted on them?”

“Yes, they’re a traditional cake eaten during the traditional Scottish Hogmanay celebration on New Year’s Day.” Ian finished packing up the donuts, closed the box, and placed it on the counter. “Would you like to try one?”

“Yes, please. I have no idea what’s inside, but I like surprises. I’ll try to figure out what the ingredients are.” Mr. Detective looked back up. “Gives me a fun mystery to ponder.”

“Okay, I’ll get you one in a small box.” Ian wasn’t going to ask about the other mysteries, the not-so-fun ones, in the man’s life. He might be a homicide detective, and eww, Ian wasn’t going there. “Anything else I can get you?”

“Nah, I’m okay for now.” Mr. Detective grinned again. “But if your stuff tastes as good as it looks and smells, I’ll definitely be back. Can’t believe I’ve worked here for five years and have never noticed this place. Don’t tell anyone, or they’ll take my badge.”

Ian laughed as he rang up the purchase and took the guy’s money. As far as I’m concerned, you can come back anytime, Mr. Detective!

AboutTheAuthor

I’m a night owl and start writing when everyone else in my time zone is asleep. I’ve loved reading all my life and spent most of my childhood with my nose buried in a book. Although I always wanted to be a writer, financial independence came first. Twenty-some years and a successful business career later I took some online writing classes and never looked back.

Living and working in seven countries has taught me that there's more than one way to get things done. It has instilled tremendous respect for the many different cultures, beliefs, attitudes and preferences that exist on our planet.

I like exploring those differences in my stories, most of which happen to be romances. My characters have a tendency to want to do their own thing, so I often have to rein them back in. The one thing we all agree on is the desire for a happy ending.

I currently live in the United Kingdom, sharing my house with a vast collection of books. I like reading, traveling, spending time with my nieces and listening to classical music. I have a passion for science and learning new languages.

Series: Left At The Crossroads #3

Author: Lisa Worrall

Cover Artist: Meredith Russell

Length: 45,000 words

Release Date: June 29, 2015

Blurb: Little Mowbury is a sleepy English village deep in the Cotswolds. The kind of village where you’re only a local if your lineage can be traced back to the dinosaurs. Where you can find everything in the single village shop from morning newspapers to dry-cleaning, and getting your shoes mended. And, of course, where everybody knows everybody else’s business. It’s easy to find… you can’t miss it… just ask anyone and they’ll tell you… “It’s left at the crossroads.”

Oliver Bradford has had enough of the hustle and bustle of the A&E department in a big city hospital. Not to mention the tension caused by the break-up of his three year relationship with one of the hospital’s top surgeons. When his sister urges him to apply for the position of GP in the quiet village of Little Mowbury, he wonders if this might be just the fresh start he needs. Unfortunately, hitting the post-mistresses’ dog with his car isn’t the best introduction to his patients.

A solitary soul, Deano Wells grew up in Little Mowbury and has been having lunch at the Thatcher’s Arms on a Thursday for the last thirty-five years. First with his father, who brought him to the pub at the tender age of ten after a hard morning in the fields, and then by himself after his father passed on. He runs the farm with a practised hand and minds his business mostly, but that doesn’t stop Oliver from being drawn to the big, quiet man and he knows the feeling is mutual, so why does Deano keep pushing him away?

CommonExcerpt

Oliver took a deep breath and lifted the heavy brass knocker. The opportunity to drop it, however, was taken from him as the door was suddenly opened and the knocker yanked from his hand.

“Oliver!”

His breath whistled out of him as he was pulled into a bone-crushing hug by a tiny woman sporting a lavender rinse and a flowery apron. She released him long enough to drag him over the threshold and into the house. The woman was not as frail as she looked. Nor was the yell she gave the soft and quiet one you would have expected.

“Malcolm! Oliver’s here!” As she headed down the narrow hallway she glanced over her shoulder at him. “Shut the door would you, dear? Malcolm’s in the garden tying up some beans, come on through.”

Oliver did as he was bid, then followed her down the hall into a small square kitchen and out the back door into a beautiful garden that seemed to go on forever. He paused as he stepped onto the patio, letting the breathtaking view wash over him. On the paved patio area to the right of where he stood was a table surrounded by six chairs. Edged by brightly coloured flowers, three steps led down onto the path that wove its way through the lawn, which was dotted with apple and cherry trees. Beyond that was what looked like a vegetable patch, where a tall, rangy-looking older gentleman tied broad beans to a bamboo stick with green string. Oliver recognised him immediately from their Skype conversations.

“Oliver!” Malcolm Winslow lifted a hand and beckoned to him.

“Go on, dear, he doesn’t bite, needs new dentures. I’ll put the kettle on.” She gave him an encouraging smile then disappeared back into the kitchen.

Oliver put his briefcase under the table so it was out of the way, then hurried down the steps and across the garden to the current GP. He smiled when he reached him and held out his hand.

“Malcolm, it’s good to finally meet you in the flesh.”

“And you, my boy, and you.” Malcolm ignored Oliver’s hand and hugged him hard, slapping him on the back before he let him go. “We don’t go much for handshakes round here. Just be careful of the WI, their hands tend to wander.” He slung an arm around Oliver’s shoulder and urged him back towards the patio. “I see you’ve met Violet. She’s been on tenterhooks all day. I was beginning to think you’d arranged a secret rendezvous or something. She never gets that excited when I come home.”

“Be quiet, you silly old fool,” Violet said, putting a tray with a teapot and three cups and saucers on the glass topped table. Oliver smiled as she shot Malcolm a look that took the sting out of the comment. Malcolm grinned at her and eased himself into one of the chairs, indicating to Oliver to do the same. “How do you take your tea, Oliver?”

“White, one sugar, please,” Oliver replied as he settled comfortably in his seat. The late afternoon sun was high in the sky and its rays beat down on them. He sighed softly. He could get used to this.

“Any news on Hugo?” Violet asked as she set his cup in front of him.

Oliver blinked, lost for words. How did she know?

“The smoke signals went up as soon as you rolled into the village,” Malcolm said dryly. “Gossip flies around this place quicker than a bee on a 747. Not one of Little Mowbury’s better traits. But one you’ll have to get used to I’m afraid. The old biddies aren’t happy unless they’re buzzing about something.”

“Pfft, your curtains twitch as much as anyone else’s,” Violet admonished and turned her attention back to a dumbstruck Oliver. “So, any news?”

“Not yet,” Oliver said, curling his fingers around his cup. “Deano took him to someone called Maguire, who I presume is a vet. Jason at the pub said he’d let me know how Hugo was once they knew anything.”

“Deano’s a good boy,” Violet said with an encouraging pat on Oliver’s forearm. “He’ll sort it out.”

“My wife has a soft spot for Deano Wells,” Malcolm said, dropping Oliver a wink. “That’s why I’m retiring, so I can keep an eye on her. It’s the curse of being married to a great beauty, Oliver. I have to make sure she doesn’t have her head turned by young bucks like you. Keeps me on my toes.”

What is on the Reading Radar?

I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for new interesting books to read. I read everything. Non-romantic fiction (usually only Sci-Fi/Fantasy), Lesfic, M/M, Menage in all the different match ups. If it's good, I'm there. I'm also a mood reader. Sometimes after I've bought the book, by the time get around to reading it I might not be in the mood. So I'm careful and pick books I know I'll come back to when I'm in the mood for something specific.

So I make lists and keep an eye on the books to see what is said about them. This is why reviews are important. I'm terrible at reviews because the most intelligent thing I can think when I go to write one is, Holy Cow I liked that. Not helpful to someone like me who needs a little bit more to make a buying decision. Before I changed jobs, I didn't have to worry about purchasing a book and discovering that it wasn't for me. Nowadays, I'm more frugal with my money and read more reviews than I used to.

The problem is, sometimes I can't find good reviews for what I like to read because lots and lots of people read and review contemporary and I'm a Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Paranormal gal. I do pick up books without reading reviews, but those are authors that I've read before and liked. New to me authors I'm hesitant about because there are so many out there and some just aren't for me.

I love dark a gritty sometimes. I had been watching this one sci-fi book that I loved the cover for. The blurb sounded interesting but it also hinted that there might be dub con. I can't do dub con or slaver societies because I always (ALWAYS) wish for the perpetrator to die. A friend read the book and let me know that yes there was a couple of dub con scenes which made me glad that I waited before making an impulse by.

So here are some books on my reading radar that I think that I might like. Y'all have any recommendations? I would love to know your thoughts.

Barely escaping with his soul intact, Ian is able to undo the hex, but he can't escape the very real infatuation he's developed for the fierce, alluring elf.

Ezekiel Stormshadow is a svarta, a dark elf who serves the Queen of the dark realm. The realm of darkness needs the power of light to survive, and while hunting the last few magical beings on earth, Ezekiel discovers Ian, a light elf who's unaware of his true nature and ripe for the plucking. Their brief encounter awakens a great hunger in Ezekiel, and he's determined to feast on the light elf's power and body before the queen intervenes and claims Ian for herself.

Ian knows only he can save Ezekiel from the grasp of the dark queen. Driven apart by the ancient imbalance between the dark and light realms, an evil queen starved for power, and their fear of each other, Ian and Ezekiel are relentlessly drawn together even though their union might destroy them both.

Ra. Just two letters. Barely a breath. When she stumbles into the frozen Haethfalt highlands, her name is all she has—the last remnant of a past she’s managed to keep hidden, even from herself. Her magic, however, isn’t so easy to conceal—magic that’s the province of the Meer, an illicit race to which she can’t possibly belong.

The eccentric carpenter who takes her in provides a welcome distraction from the puzzle of herself. Though Jak refuses to identify as either male or female, the unmistakable spark of desire between them leaves Ra determined to find out what lies beneath the enigmatic exterior.

But more dangerous secrets are brewing underneath the wintry moors. Jak’s closest friend, Ahr, is haunted by his own unspeakable past. Bounty hunters seeking fugitive Meer refuse to leave him in peace.

Harboring feelings for both Ra and Ahr, Jak nonetheless struggles to keep them apart. Because like the sun and the moon coming together, their inevitable reunion has the potential to destroy Jak’s whole world.

With a past he keeps hoping to outrun, Asher’s been on a downward spiral for longer than he can remember. Asher must choose who to trust and who to finally walk away from.

I usually wait until the serial to finish and then I buy the set but the cover for this one is just so awesome. I'm worried about dub con.
Serial Series Title: Evolution: House of Théoden
Author: Nicholas Bella
Series: The New Haven Series
Genre: MM Paranormal

Blurb:

Théoden: Dante is within my grasp. I’m actually very excited to meet my future son. He’s got wolf’s blood flowing within his veins, so I know he’ll be the stubborn sort, but I do like a challenge. As for Deacon, the wolf Alpha has surprised me. I hadn’t expected him to locate Dante so quickly. He’s a cunning one I’m going to have to keep my eye on. His ambition is both admirable and dangerous. As for my King’s decree, things are moving along smoothly. I have two more children to sire and then I would have fulfilled my duty. The sooner I’m done with that, the quicker I can get to training my new child. I’m so looking forward to breaking him in.

Noel: As for my obligation to the King, I met his expectations. I’ve sired my first son and it’s been one hell of an experience. I thought I would feel overwhelmed, but Romeo is taking to this life so naturally. I guess you could say that I chose wisely. I’m also getting the hang of being in control and being his Father. No doubt, Marco’s training is seeing me through a lot of transition. Now, I have to hold up my part in the bargain Théoden made with Deacon. Can’t say I’m happy about being used as a bargaining chip, but it’s out of my hands. As for my training with Marco, he’s promised to put me through the ringer physically. I’m ready to learn more and grow stronger.

Warning: This serial contains strong adult content not meant for sensitive eyes. The novelettes in this serial will be filled with dark, twisted, raunchy and steamy scenes between powerful, sexy men that will either offend you or get ya revved up. This series will not be pulling any punches, and it won’t apologize for hurting your feelings, either. You’ll find no fluff and ruffles here. The vampires are not misunderstood, hopeless romantics looking for love. The werewolves are not cute and cuddly and the dragons aren’t the ones from your childhood. This is NOT a romance.
