What's on the Reading Radar? #TBR #WishList

What is going on? We are packing to move. Serious packing. Never ending packing. Why do we have all this stuff, packing.

Series: Desert Homesteaders
Author: Susie Hawke
Length:

Genre: Romance / Paranormal / Shifter / Humor / Gay /

Notes:

Blurb: Fall in love with a quirky mixed-shifter pack who live off the grid and always have each other’s backs.

By-the-book correctional officer Niles Ford has been resisting his fated mate, Kyle Jones. After all, how could two alphas ever make sense? Even a sunshine boy like Kyle couldn’t fill Niles’s need for an heir… although the silly quokka shifter does know how to make him smile. The fact that his inner puma is yowling for Niles to claim their mate isn’t helping matters.

They’re both dancing around each other when a random omega prisoner turns out to be the piece they’ve been missing… the last part of the puzzle that will make them whole. Before Kyle and Niles can claim Major Lawrence P. Woodlawn and begin their happy ever after, they find themselves on the run from a gaggle of goose shifters who have decided that Larry belongs to them.

Join the trio as they hit the road in a lifesize Barbie-mobile to claim Niles’s new position as pack alpha for a small pack in Arizona… along with an intrepid pair of senior citizens who should never be taken seriously. The only problem is… before they can get to their homestead and meet the pack, the five of them must first escape the clutches of those danged geese who just won’t give up.

This m/m/m romantic comedy is the first in a new adventure series. This world contains mpreg, but won’t have a birth in every book due to the short timelines. Be prepared for side-splitting laughs, shifter on shifter violence, a group of people who know that family always comes first, and all the feels you’d expect from a Susi Hawke original.

In the far distant future, the universe is officially ruled by the Royal Consortium, but the High Councillors, the heads of the three High Houses, wield the true power. As the fifth of six children, Ada von Hasenberg has no authority; her only value to her High House is as a pawn in a political marriage. When her father arranges for her to wed a noble from House Rockhurst, a man she neither wants nor loves, Ada seizes control of her own destiny. The spirited princess flees before the betrothal ceremony and disappears among the stars.

Ada eluded her father’s forces for two years, but now her luck has run out. To ensure she cannot escape again, the fiery princess is thrown into a prison cell with Marcus Loch. Known as the Devil of Fornax Zero, Loch is rumored to have killed his entire chain of command during the Fornax Rebellion, and the Consortium wants his head.

When the ship returning them to Earth is attacked by a battle cruiser from rival House Rockhurst, Ada realizes that if her jilted fiancé captures her, she’ll become a political prisoner and a liability to her House. Series: Being(s) in Love
Author: R. Cooper
Length: 239 pages

Genre: Romance / Paranormal / Magical Creatures / Alternate World / Gay /

Notes:

Blurb: A Being(s) in Love Anthology

Very little is known about seers—those individuals, both human and being, with the power to know both what could have been and what is yet to come. Seers prefer it that way. Some of them run from their visions. Others call themselves artists or authors instead of oracles. But even in the most seemingly innocent of their creations, the truth will out, and lessons will be learned.

Two storytellers of different eras and vastly different temperaments weave fantastic tales of magic and romance for their enthralled audiences: A young prince avoids his betrothed and the curse that binds them. A witch uses his magic to help the man he loves court someone else. A warrior betrayed by his lord finds himself in the company of a mysterious stranger. A half-fae is doomed to be sent to the Faery Court unless he can find someone to love him. A lonely outcast finds himself drawn to a forbidden forest. A bookseller at a masked ball wonders if he should pursue a handsome prince. A dragon attempts to woo a beast. A shy servant is given one night to reach for what he wants. Fairy tales that reveal more about the tellers, and their audiences, than they might want.

Being(s) in Love:

Magical creatures known as beings emerged from hiding amid the destruction of the First World War. Since then they’ve lived on the margins of the human world as misunderstood objects of fear and desire. Some are beautiful, others fearsome and powerful. Yet for all their magic and strength, they are as vulnerable as anyone when it comes to matters of the heart.

Series:
Author: Jamie Sullivan
Length: 155 pages

Genre: Romance / Fantasy / Dragons / Gay /

Notes: #read This is an awesome story.

Blurb: The greatest thief captures an unexpected prize.

Madfall is the greatest thief in the kingdom, stealing crowns off the very heads of kings. His hoard is legendary. Simply put, he’s a dragon through and through. So, when he steals a basket of “gold” from the king’s castle but finds a baby inside, he’s at a loss. What’s a dragon to do?

Seventeen years later, inexperienced knight Richard of Benfro sets out to slay the dragon, expecting death or glory. Not the most awkward meet-cute in history when he’s captured by the dragon’s human—and handsome—son.

Oenyn has been content living with Madfall, enjoying the fierce and protective love of his adopted father. But he’s always been curious about humanity. When Richard blunders into the home he shares with Madfall, Oenyn grabs the chance to learn all he can about people, castle life, sex . . . and maybe love. At least until Richard makes a startling discovery.

Caught between a potential future in the human world and his old life, Oenyn is faced with an impossible choice. Luckily, being raised by a dragon has left him plenty stubborn. He won’t give up his father, or his human family, without a fight.

Series:
Author: Golden Czermak
Length: 432 pages

Genre: Urban Fantasy / Paranormal / Young Adult-New Adult (no one on that cover looks like a high-schooler) / Bullying & Abuse / Alpha Struggles /

Sparks fly as Cooper Bennett finds himself in the midst of a battle between dark forces and alpha shifters in this epic paranormal adventure that turns the sleepy mountain town of Goodman, GA upside down.

Chapter 42

Tezcatlipoca released Diego’s foot as he stepped out of the vision and became aware of the hard, menacing glare of the blond man. Instead of relaxing at the head of the bed, the man knelt crouched over Diego’s legs, still talking on the phone.

“I don’t know, but it released Diego,” the man said into the phone. Tezcatlipoca tried to remember the name given when he was introduced to Zane. Something foreign, unusual. Beck. Yes, Beck was this man’s name and he was obviously bonded to Diego.

“How would I know what it is?” Beck continued his phone conversation. “Do demons use black smoke to travel around in the daylight?”

Tezcatlipoca snorted and took the form of the smoke jaguar. Not his full size, though. It would be foolish and counterproductive to provoke this one. He hunched under the table and gave what he thought was a ‘look at how harmless I am’ mew and Beck’s blond brows rose, shooting Tezcatlipoca an incredulous look that said he clearly failed.

Beck frowned. “What do you mean you’re coming up?”

Diego moved and Beck shifted to allow Diego to roll over and sit up. When Diego’s gaze landed on him, Tezcatlipoca smiled then realized that showing his teeth wasn’t a good idea when Beck sucked in a breath and put a palm on the gun holstered at his waist.

“You’re real!” Diego exclaimed, scrambling for the edge of the bed and drawing Beck’s attention. Beck grabbed Diego before he could stand. “No, it’s alright, Beck. He—” Diego paused. Perhaps Tezcatlipoca should have introduced himself when he had Diego to himself.

Without a warning knock, power washed through the door before it opened, and a younger version of Beck entered followed by several people. Tez only had eyes for the young man as he savored the waves of power that emanated from him. Now this, this was someone to watch. Was he an ally of Diego’s?

“Jude!” Beck’s voice held both relief and censure. “I told you we were fine.”

Curly, dirty blond hair flopped into Jude’s grey-blue eyes that belonged to an old soul, perhaps as old as himself. The young man swept his gaze over Tezcatlipoca, assessing him and Tezcatlipoca wondered what exactly Jude saw. Could he feel Tezcatlipoca on the same level that Tezcatlipoca could sense him?

“We were in the neighborhood, sorta,” the man behind Jude said.

Deciding that Jude was only a minor threat, Tezcatlipoca took in his companions. The one who stood like a warrior had dark brown hair cut into a wedge that hid an eye. The green eye that stared back at him was an unusual color. Too bright, too vibrant to be human and yet Tezcatlipoca could not identify what this man was, but he smelled like the deep woods in the high north. Next to him was the woman who had come to Zane’s with Diego and Beck yesterday, Denise was her name. She was barely human, like Diego but not. Like that spider Ella, but also not. He thought he should know, but the scent of Other on her was so diluted that the origin eluded Tezcatlipoca. He thought that if he touched her with his magic, he would know, but this was not the time to do so. The final person that followed Jude into the room was tall and gangly, as if he never had enough to eat. His hair and stylized beard were the color of blood and he too had green eyes, but they were darker and reminded Tezcatlipoca of the jungle lit by the first rays of morning sun. Like Jude, immense power flowed from him and Tezcatlipoca could almost see the ripples it created.

“Close the door, Niall,” Diego said, beckoning the newcomers closer.

“That is not a demon,” Jude said to Beck.

“Agreed,” replied Niall.

“Demons only come from your kind,” Tezcatlipoca enlightened. “I met a demon before I went to sleep. Even if one were here, I would have no quarrel with them.”

Jude sat on the bed next to Diego. “You didn’t say it talked, Beck.”

“How was I supposed to know?” Beck said with heavy indignation.

Tezcatlipoca sighed loudly. He wanted to return to Zane. He sensed… something from Zane. His connection to the tribe’s patron was new and only partially formed. A blood sacrifice was needed to tie Zane more closely to him. There was time, and he sensed an opportunity coming that could be used for that purpose. But until then, he had to remind himself to pay close attention to their connection. Zane was usually unflappable but in the last few minutes a growing sense that Tezcatlipoca was needed by his patron was trying to steal his attention from this situation.

“I am no threat to anyone in this room. I only came to speak to the wiseman and offer him a place in a tribe that would shelter him and help him to grow into his abilities.” Tezcatlipoca looked to Diego. “You have already met my Most Trusted and his tribe, but I understand that you have questions. For the answers, you must go back to Zane’s, which is were I need to go now.”

“Alonzo?” Diego asked in astonishment.

“What about Alonzo?” Beck looked confused.

Tezcatlipoca release his jaguar form and flowed toward the door, stopping long enough to rise up and look Niall in the eyes. He did like the feel of this man’s power. “Bring your friends, Diego Hernandez. There is much to discuss.”

With that, Tezcatlipoca slipped through the cracks in the door jam and into the hotel’s hallway. No one noticed him as he left the hotel, but when he was outside mentally following his tie to his Most Trusted, he sensed what Zane had when they left the ranch. He was being watched but not by a human and not by an Other. Tezcatlipoca had thought it was something about this area. That presence had been here when Tezcatlipoca first came for Zane and his tribe, so he’d believed it a natural phenomenon. But now the sensation had more than tripled in strength and carried the scent of molten metals and hot fires. Being close to Jude and Niall’s power had let Tezcatlipoca get a feel for another’s power so that now he recognized the sensation for what it was.

A being or beings who were more powerful than Jude and Niall combined were hunting in Tezcatlipoca’s territory. He hurried, following the tie to Alonzo. Anger built and he embraced it. If a god was hunting Zane and his tribe, Tezcatlipoca would solidify his connection to Zane by bathing them all in god’s blood.

Title: Love Bites
Series: Thicker Than Water, 1
Author: Ann-Katrin Byrde
Length: 289 pages

Genre: Romance / Paranormal / Vampire / Gay

Notes: I have been on the fence with this series just because I don't know if it's angsty or not. I'm not into angst-romances at the moment, but I want to read some vampire romances... LOL

Blurb: Other parents give their children toys and party games for their birthday. My dad gave me and my siblings wooden stakes and flash grenades. To protect us from vampires.

From the moment he adopted us, he warned us about the dangers that lurk in the dark. Obviously, I thought he was crazy. Vampires aren’t real, and I was already enduring enough panic attacks without buying into Dad’s insane ideas.

But then I met Talon.

Talon has fascinating scars and a mouth I want to kiss and a body I want to feel--and fangs.

Vampire fangs.

Suddenly, the weapons Dad gave me start looking real useful.

Only I don't want to fight Talon. I want to feel his teeth on my neck. I can't explain it. He makes my knees goes weak. I know it's wrong, but it feels right.

It feels like destiny.

When Talon bites me, I forget everything, even that he is a monster. Even that I shouldn't be falling for him.

Even that his coven wants me dead.

Go for counseling with the sexy succubus, my friends said. It couldn’t be worse than dying, right?

But when he meets newcomer Lee Caldwell, Evan thinks his lonely luck might be changing. Lee is the only person in the city who doesn’t blame Evan for his dragon’s death, and he welcomes Evan into his own little family. There’s more to Lee than meets the eye, though, and between his refusal to talk about himself, pressure from the mayor to split them up, and a monster attacking the city’s foundations, Evan isn’t sure he’ll live long enough to learn the truth.

But not learning the truth will almost certainly be fatal, both to Evan and Lee’s budding relationship, and to the entire city.

He now understood why Diego called this man Brujo Blanco. White skin. White hair. Even his attire was white, but Tezcatlipoca could see past the skin, past the facade. This brujo had immense power that reminded him of Malinalxochtil. She had been clever and cunning, becoming skillful in the use of her power. But her aspirations did not benefit the people, and her craftiness cause much harm. She made herself feared so people would worship her. She sowed chaos—evil as the Spaniards would put it—misusing her talents to bend people to her will and glorify herself. Her vileness infected many. She was the goddess of snakes, scorpions, and the insects of the desert. She and her attendants were abandoned in the desert by her tribe while they sought the place to build Tenochtitlan and she became an enemy of the Aztec people. Secret societies dedicated to her were created and she was worshiped by those who misused their talents.

Was this White Witch one of hers? The more that he poked at this dream version of the man, the more sure Tezcatlipoca became that she was the power behind this charlatan. Even here, the brujo stank of her power.

The brujo opened the book and flipped through the heavy pages. There were so many names, so many chained. Tezcatlipoca snarled again as he peered through the vile magic to what it bound. Most of those ensnared had blue ribbons that bound them to him. This deceiver and his goddess were trying to steal what was Tezcatlipoca’s. He crouched, ready to pounce on the brujo and rend the liar into tiny pieces.

Warm arms wrapped around his neck. Diego whispered in his ear, reminding Tez that this was a vision years old. To save his strength and his fury.

The brujo said Hector’s full name, and there was an echo of the tug on the blue ribbon between him and Hector. Had the witch known that Hector was already connected to him before the ceremony started? He glanced down at the large book with its thick, handbound pages, and the number of people listed there who were tied to him. He suspected they were targeted for that very reason.

Smoke crept from the brujo, flowing around Hector’s legs as he worked his magic. This was not Tezcatlipoca’s magic, but it was familiar and old like he was.

“Will you accept the gift of the jaguar willingly submit to the ways of the warriors of old?” the brujo intoned. His eyes blazed with expectation, as if the jaws of a mighty trap were ready to spring on a highly coveted prize. “Enter your blood into the book of binding.”

As Hector sliced his palm over the aged pages. Tezcatlipoca narrowed his eyes at the smoke winding up Hector’s legs. Another illusion he decided, and he swiped his claws through the smoke to reveal a serpent making its way to Hector’s waist.

“I see you, little sister,” he whispered.

Diego stiffened. “You know it—her?”

“Yes.” Tez hissed. Diego’s grip on his ruff tightened as a golden jaguar prowled to the edge of the circle. The attack was brutal and swift and effective.

This too Tezcatlipoca remembered, Hector’s distress had woken him from slumber long enough for him to feed energy to Hector. Had he done the same thing time and again when this witch had targeted the people imprisoned by the book? Had he been pulled from false slumber long enough to protect those bound to him? Rage was living breathing thing caged only by his skin. He just needed a location and he would unleash the chaos that wanted to be freed.

Tezcatlipoca looked up at Diego, taking his tear-streaked skin and haunted eyes. “Are you ready for the truth of who you are?” Diego tore his gaze away from his wounded brother to glance at Tezcatlipoca. “I can teach you the ways of the wiseman, but first you must grow roots and I will be the solid firmness in which your roots can delve deep. Only then can you grow and learn, becoming who you were meant to be. The wiseman: a light, a stout torch that does not smoke. He himself is writing and wisdom. He is the path, the true way of others. He who directs people and things; he is the guide. Teacher of truth. He comforts the heart, he comforts the people, he helps, gives remedies, heals everyone. All of this you can be.”

Diego stared at Tezcatlipoca, his gaze full of hope. A soft blue thread sprouted from Diego’s chest, waving in the air not yet connected. So tiny and delicate this new belief that had been born.

“You are an old god, aren’t you?” Diego whispered. “You broke the magic here. What would you need from someone like me?”

“The tribe of my Most Trusted needs a wiseman, a shaman,” he replied.

Diego’s expression turned shrewd. “I feel—I trust my senses.” He glanced at Hector still lying on the floor since the vision ended. “I want to speak to this person, this Most Trusted, before I make a decision.”

Tezcatlipoca grinned, flashing all his teeth, and lead Diego out of the vision. There was much they needed to prepare for.

Since the murder of his brother, Gavrila Ardenovic has been on the trail of a secret society, but in the city where he is only mocked, he has few allies. Therefore he keeps his distance from others and is used to suppressing any hint of emotion.

Will lies and intrigues prevail or can Hyacinth succeed in battling the shadows of the past and break through his husband’s cold-hearted façade?

This romance novel is set in an alternate-universe Victorian Era without magic or other fantasy elements.

Series: The Quentin Strange Mysteries Book 1
Author: Dean Cole
Length: 242 pages

Genre: Romance / Mystery / Paranormal / LGBT Romance /

Notes: This was recommended to me and released June 12th.

Blurb: Haunted pasts. Terrifying apparitions. Dark secrets.

Quentin Strange is … well, strange. But it isn’t just his anachronistic sayings and dress sense, the fact that he’s a socially awkward, book-loving loner who’s possibly still a virgin at nearly thirty. He’s seeing and hearing things. Odd things. Ghostly things.

Getting the gig as photographer for The Cricklewood Gazette, he travels with his new partner, journalist Katrina (make sure you call her Kat) Brannigan, to Hilderley Manor, an enormous manor house nestled in the remote countryside of Northern England that is believed to be one of Britain’s most haunted buildings. The pair join a ghost hunting team and a group of fellow guests for a long weekend of ghostly activities.

But something dark haunts the draughty corridors of the house. And it links to a decades-old mystery that is about to be uncovered.

A mystery like no other. A story of the supernatural. Of death, and what it does to the living. The first book in a new series, Chasing Ghosts is a quirky British mystery that explores the supernatural elements of our world with touches of LGBT romance, humour and horror.

Assassin's Retirement, Chapter 41, Part 2 #TheGentleman #IONSeries #polyromance #blogstory

Welcome back to Assassin's Retirement!

This blog story is written weekly (completely pantsed, so sometimes even I'm surprised at the left hand turns) in 1000 word sprints. If you are new to the story, scroll to the bottom to the Table of Content.

“This is my realm, and no one can keep me out.” He swiped his claws over the barrier, deep gashes showing black before the barrier crackled then broke like shattered glass.

Diego stared at the shards before lifting his gaze stare at him. “Who are you?” He rubbed his eyes, mumbling, “This is not real. Just a dream. I couldn’t get lucky enough to find someone who could teach me.”

Tezcatlipoca smirked, knowing his expression revealed an impressive set of sharp teeth. “Stay near me so I can protect you from other traps. Let us go see what kind of witch has overstepped themselves.

“Brujo Blanco,” Diego said with a snear, but he grabbed a handful of Tezcatlipoca’s ruff, which pleased him. Diego’s lack of fear spoke of an inborn sense of connection. He suspected that somewhere in Diego’s bloodline he would find one or more Maricoxi. That would be the only reason Diego’s magic would speak to him so strongly.

“Those are words of the invading Spaniards.” He growled to show his displeasure. “This is perhaps a Naoalli. A teixcuepani. Whatever he is, I want to know what he is doing.”

They stopped before the young man frozen in the middle of a cheer, fists raised over his head, his expression exultant, but his eyes… Resignation. Determination. “What is his name?” Tezcatlipoca asked.

“Hector,” Diego said staring at the golden threads.

Tezcatlipoca sat and closed his eyes. “Hector,” he rumbled, reaching for one of the prayer threads. “Why do you believe in me? Why do you pray to me?”

Diego gasped. Tezcatlipoca opened his eyes. Beyond the frozen tableau a slash rent the air, revealing a room sheathed in moonlight. In the middle of the bed sat Hector, looking only slightly younger, more innocent but there was a stubborn set to Hector’s shoulders and in his cupped hands he held a then piece of obsidian. Where sis he get the smoking mirror?

“Tezcatlipoca,” Hector intoned with such familiarity that Tezcatlipoca knew Hector had been through this ritual many times. “Ipalnemoani. Necoc Yaotl. TloqueNahuaque. Yohualli Ehecatl. Ome Acatl. Ilhuicahua Tlalticpaque.” Not once did Hector stumble over any of Tezcatlipoca’s epithets.

He closed his eyes drawn to a memory of waking briefly from slumber to hear the plea of this fierce believer. He by whom we live. Enemy of both sides. Lord of near and nigh. Wind, night. Two reed. Possessor of the sky an earth.

Yes,  remembered. “Hector Emmanual Hernandez,” he said aloud.

The figure on the bed smiled into the mirror. “I pray for strength. My family is being hunted by many who would try to use our talents for their gain. But we remember and we keep the balance between order and chaos. We resist the temptation of corruption. Abuela protects us as much as she can against the brujo, but soon he will shed much blood to get what he wants. I can feel the storm he brings. Madre doesn’t believe and padre had turned away from… “ Hector covered his face with one hand, still holding  the mirror in the other hand.

“Tell me, young warrior,” Tezcatlipoca said, his voice echoing in the memory.

“I see the darkness growing in Buela’s head. She cannot… her time with us is limited. I must step up and protect Diego and our sisters. There is no one else, but I am afraid. The shadows lining the path speaks of violence and death.”

“As long as you act with empathy, you will always be mine, and your magic will not be corrupted by another,” Tezcatlipoca counselled sleepily. Looking back, he realized that he’d had trouble staying awake, and he growled with his rising suspicion. He should have been more interested in the prayers of one so young in a time when most people had all but forgotten who he was and the rituals that allowed them to reach him.

“I will have to do things to make the brujo believe me,” Hector whispered. “Protecting la familia from harm is my most important task. I will find the balance needed but I’m afraid that I will lose myself. I don’t want to be evil.”

Tezcatlipoca replayed more prayers from Hector and considered his unnatural lethargy. Someone had overstepped more than he thought. They had attempted to shroud the world from him but even that dark magic could not bar the prayers or his awareness of his Most Faithful. Diego leaned against his side smelling of salty tears. Hector asked for strength, wisdom, and patience. He never requested protection nor to be saved from the fate he sensed he had to walk. Such selflessness, and as a reward, Tezcatlipoca sought and found a blue ribbon that was fundamentally different from the prayer threads. It was Hector’s proclamation that even after all these years he was loyal to Tezcatlipoca. He stroked that tie, strengthening it, then he sent power to Hector.

“I am coming for you,” he whispered down their connection.

He’d seen enough, Tezcatlipoca un-paused the vision and Hector continued his bouncing walk around the circle. Instead of watching Hector, he approached the alter and the brujo who stepped into the circle carrying a book that reeked of ill intentions and imprisonment. The man was covered by an illusion that blurred his features here in the vision, in the dream where seers like Diego could walk. What would a person be up to that he would need to protect himself from the sight? Was he hiding from Diego or from oracles like Ella or both?

The tome was set on the stone’s top and Tezcatlipoca growled. Whoever they were, they would not be able to hide from him. He unsheathed his claws and swipe a paw over the figure, rending the illusion as if it was tissue paper and the magic fell away.
