BLURB

Ghost, once known as the cub Luca, is finally home. Back among his kind and learning what it means to be both a man and a shaman, Ghost battles the expectations of his people, his family, and the pressures of a society that is both foreign and familiar. His power is greater than any seen before, dwarfing that of even the legendary Shaman Gray Shadow—and his union with Kane places him in the center of a controversy that rattles wolfkin society around the world.

Kane, greater alpha and Heir to Black Pine Clan, has finally defeated the traitor and murderer that destroyed the heart of Black Pine years before. Freed at last from guilt and pain, Kane has a new enemy to face: his own people. Placed on trial for violation of Law and blasphemy, Kane will have to fight to the death to preserve his bond with Ghost and keep his mate and people safe.

The soulbond between Ghost and Kane is forged by the creator and Goddess of the wolfkin. Usually, a sacred and treasured union that honors the pair and their clans, this soulbond is seen not as a gift, but a threat to eons of tradition and Clan Law.

The union of a Shaman and Alpha is anathema—but how to reconcile that belief when it is the wolfkin Goddess who forged it? Can Ghost and Kane save themselves, preserve their bond, and find a new future when the laws of the ancient past threaten to tear them apart?

“Threesomes are common in casual arrangements. As something more formal like a mating, usually it’s an alpha with two beta females, each serving as alpha mate. Such arrangements are rare, and in some places, are frowned upon, but since Royrick is a clan leader, any blowback he might get will be minimal. Red Wraith is one of the more progressive clans in the Northeast,” Kane explained. “Things might be tense, especially since Gerald is male and Sophia has a well-known history with Royrick, but Royrick and Sophia are both strong enough to mitigate any issues. I think they’ll be happy after a brief adjustment period.”

“But so fast?” Cat asked, head tilting to the side.

“Not fast for us, not really. Our people tend to know whether we’re going to be compatible quickly—and the older we are when we mate, the better the matches. Sophia and Royrick have known each other for a long time, and Gerald fits them both. All three are a few hundred years or older. It’s a good match.”

Cat’s hands twitched, like she wanted to take notes. Glen frowned at Kane, and looked at Ghost. He could almost read his human alpha’s mind. “Kane and I are soulbonded—there will never be a need or room for a third. Their triad is a matter of choice—they have chosen to be together in such a way. Our pairing is Goddess-forged, and entirely different.”

“You didn’t have a choice? I thought wolfkin just moved fast compared to humans.” Glen frowned even harder, narrowing his eyes at Kane. His human alpha was no match for Kane, and seeing Glen get worked up made Ghost feel better about his choices. Glen would always be family. No matter where they were.

“I would have chosen this mating with Kane,” Ghost said, leaning forward, meeting Glen’s concerned gaze and holding it. “I love him. I’ve always loved him. Even when I forgot who I was, the impression Kane had made on me remained from our brief meeting when I was a cub. A soulbond is a blessing, not a trap.”

“Is that how you feel?” Glen demanded of Kane. “Would you have chosen Ghost if given the choice?”

“Yes,” Kane answered, without hesitation and with enough force Glen sat back in his seat, blinking. “I never could let go of the belief that Ghost was alive. He may have been a cub when last we met, but he left a lasting and permanent impression on my heart. Finding him now, a grown wolf, has been the greatest joy and gift I could ever receive, and I will be thankful forever that our Goddess joined us. I love him. She can bind us together, but She cannot create love. We came to love each other on our own.”

“Why would your Goddess join you?” Cat asked, confused. “If you were going to fall in love anyway, why do the soulbond thing?”

“I don’t know.” Kane answered. Ghost looked up at his mate. “She has a plan. She never does anything without purpose. Maybe She knew we would need the protection of the soulbond to see us through. I am grateful for it—I don’t know if I would have the courage to claim Ghost as mine without it. Not if it meant his life would be in danger.”

“You would have,” Ghost murmured. “No one is braver than you. I might have needed to nudge you along if we didn’t have the soulbond, but us loving each other is as inevitable as the sunrise.”

“Where have you been? With your mate?” Glen asked, and Ghost grumbled.

“Been running around the mountain all night long, thinking. Being a man is hard. How do you do it?”

Glen snorted out a laugh. “Practice.” He nodded at the blanket, and Ghost sighed loudly.

Ghost sat up, wrapping the quilt about his hips. He threw himself back down almost immediately, and Glen found himself unable to resist the plaintive whine that came from his pretty lips. Glen was as straight as they came, but even he could acknowledge the sheer beauty of the human form of his wayward wolf. Ghost was beautiful, inside and out, and yet he had a shade of sadness hovering about his expressive silver eyes. He walked around the couch and paused as Ghost scrambled out of the way long enough for him to sit down. A bare second later he had an armful of lean youth and wiggling limbs.

Ghost curled up in his lap like he used to as a pup, though it was different now, as Ghost was not a wolf anymore. Glen heaved out a groan in complaint, but let Ghost hide under his chin and snuggle. He hugged the boy to his chest, and they both relaxed, adjusting easily enough to the new dynamic.

“What’s wrong?” Glen asked, and Ghost responded in a tiny voice.

“They put Kane in a cell in the woods yesterday. And they want to destroy our mate bond.”

Glen could recall only two times in his entire life he ever got angry enough to kill. Once was back in college when he tore a drunk frat boy off a cussing and furious redhead who then proceeded to wallop her attacker. The other time was when he rescued a malnourished wolf-hybrid from a careless and ignorant suburban family in the outskirts of Toronto, the poor thing starved near to death and skeletal thin. As he did then, he ran his hands over the back of a young wolf’s head, and said, “Everything is going to be okay.”

Glen managed to hold onto his temper, but it was a battle. The youngling needed a shoulder to cry on, a place to relax his guarded emotions, and Glen would be that safe place for him.

“I wanted to come home more than anything,” Ghost whispered, pressing his face into Glen’s chest. “But nothing good has come of it. They think me damaged, weak. Vulnerable.”

“We both know you are not damaged or weak. I don’t think I would have survived fifteen years locked away in the body of a wolf, deprived of any sense of self or family. You’re strong. And what do you mean nothing good has come from returning to your people? You have your man now, Kane. He’s your mate, no matter what those fools may say or think.”

“He’s in a cage, Glen. In the woods, alone, surrounded by alphas who wouldn’t hesitate to hurt him. I can feel him through our bond. He’s frustrated, and misses me. I haven’t seen him since they took him away yesterday We can’t talk because the alphas might be able to overhear us, but I can still feel him. It hurts not being with him.”

EXCERPT

“Decisions need to be made,” Caius began, fingers of his right hand idly scratching the table top. “About many things. Some are more urgent than others, but we are out of time, so choices must be made now.”

“Out of time?” Ghost asked, tilting his head to one side, eyes locked on his grandfather. He paused, seeing the minute tension around Caius’ eyes, the way he held his shoulders. A faint whisper threaded through the air in the silence between them, and Ghost listened. Wordless, yet still conveying a sense of urgency. Kane reacted, though he hid it well, and Caius showed no sign of having heard the whisperer. “Someone is coming. Someone or something is coming, and you wish to act before you can’t anymore.”

“Damn shamans,” Caius grumbled, exasperated, but without malice. Caius gave him a narrow-eyed glare, and Ghost grinned in response. He was not intimidated in the least by his grandfather, though everyone else treated him with caution.

“Who is coming, Sir?” Kane asked, maintaining his respectful composure. Caius gave Ghost one more glance, then returned his attention to his heir.

“The first members of the Tribunal are arriving soon. I just got word that Greater Clan Leaders from Dread Claw, Birch Grove, and Red Wraith Clans are arriving, as early as tomorrow. They will be bringing honor guards and some of their advisors.” Caius’ words were calm, but the tension around his frame was telling.

“You mean they’re bringing in greater alphas,” Kane said, mouth in a grim line. “An honor guard is easily six greater alphas, and that’s per Clan Leader.”

“Yes.”

“Why not the Clan Leaders alone? Why honor guards? What were they told when notified of Heromindes’ request for a Tribunal?” Kane was angry, each word layered in frustration. “These clans are our allies, and they’ve never traveled across borders in such numbers outside of a gathering!”

“If they are allies, why are you angry?” Ghost asked, interrupting before Caius could speak. He paced forward, yet skirted around the table, eyes locked on Caius. His grandfather, for all their blood connection, was still an alpha. Ghost respected his power, yet was not afraid of it—but he would also stay out of reach. Older wolves in the wild would snarl and snap at younger, impetuous younglings. Not that he expected such from Caius, but caution was wise.

Kane made a noise in his throat, half-strangled snort and half a sigh. Ghost gave his mate a quick grin, but went back to watching Caius. “Why are you angry at those you would call friend?”

“Luca—,” Caius began, Ghost quirked a brow at his grandfather, who shook his head and corrected himself when he spoke again. “Ghost, they are bringing honor guards. Almost twenty greater alphas who do not answer to me, in the company of my peers. In a gathering, there are many greater alphas, but also a hundred times more betas to temper the imbalance of power that results when greater alphas congregate in too large of a group.”

“What he means, little wolf, is that there is potential for aggression, fighting, frayed tempers, and extreme violence. Red Fern is all betas, but they are not enough to even out the rough nature of so many dominant personalities in one space, especially if the situation is tense already,” Kane said, reaching out for Ghost, taking his hand. “I don’t think the clan leaders would bring wolfkin guards with control issues, but we see problems like this during gatherings, too. Better to be prepared.”

“Andromeda reigns in Baxter,” Ghost stated, squeezing Kane’s hand but still watching Caius. “She will allow no violence to spill out amongst her clan.” Of that, Ghost was certain. She would never allow her people, her family, to be in danger. Andromeda was power and authority personified—she was the White Wolf, clan leader to the core. For a female, unheard of—for a beta, even more so. Though Ghost had his doubts about her beta status. “And why tense—because Kane is charged with blasphemy?”

Caius blanched at the word, and Kane’s hand tightened on his, almost painfully. Andromeda came to them the day before, warning Kane of the pending charges of blasphemy. Apparently, the clan leaders, Heromindes leading the way, discussed the bond between Ghost and Kane and decided Kane was guilty of two violations of Law in one occurrence—using the Voice to force a mating bond on a shaman.

“Yes, because of the charge of blasphemy,” Caius said, a subtle growl in his voice. “It is almost unheard of for that charge to be levied against any wolfkin, much less an heir to a clan. We have so few religious Laws.”

“I don’t understand,” Ghost said, brows lowered, biting his lip. He sent Kane a searching glance, then looked back to Caius. “Kane’s thoughts give me the meaning of the word, but the…concept? The concept is hard for me to understand. We are soulbonded, and She made it so. That has always been a sacred gift. Always.”

“They doubt that we share a soulbond, my love,” Kane told him, tugging on his hand and making him look down. Kane gave him a half-smile, a twist to his full lips that spoke of anger and some odd pain. “Heromindes, whether through bruised pride and fear, or ignorance, believes I have forced my gift upon you. I used the Voice against him in Worcester, and he cannot fathom how an untrained whelp of nineteen could withstand me. He leads the others in their mindset—there cannot be a soulbond between us, because I am alpha and you are shaman.”

“I see our bond with every glance of my Spiritsight,” Ghost replied, leaning on Kane’s shoulder, speaking now to his mate, his grandfather forgotten for the moment. “Every touch we share, every time we have sex, it grows stronger. We’re almost one soul now. How can they not see it?”

Ghost knew other wolfkin could sense the bond between them. They may not be able to see it, as he could, but their mental abilities gave them the ability to recognize a mated wolfkin. Some were better at it than others, and surely a clan leader would have the experience and skills to understand the bond between he and Kane.

“A soulbond is incredibly rare, Ghost,” Caius said, leaning back in his seat, the chair creaking. “Last count, there was only a dozen soulbonds scattered between the clans. There’s just over two hundred clans across the whole world. Hundreds of thousands of wolfkin, and only twelve pairs. Well, thirteen, now. There is only one other wholly male pairing, but those two wolfkin are a beta and an alpha, not alpha and shaman.”

“So, because our Great Mother has only gifted twelve pairs before us, that rarity makes our bond less likely?” Ghost was fed up. He growled, a soft rumble in his chest. This was not the welcome home he’d dreamed of when he was trapped in his wolf-form lost in the North. Though then, he’d been worried his people wouldn’t want him because he was defective and Gray Shadow died saving his life, but now it seemed they did want him, just not bonded to Kane.

How was their pairing wrong?

“Ghost, it’ll be alright,” Kane said, his free hand rubbing over Ghost’s stomach in soothing circles. Ghost rarely felt his temper slip free from his usual calm, but it was escaping his control now. Last time he got this vexed he tore apart an ugly couch back at the sanctuary, but he was a man now, he didn’t think his mate or the White Wolf would appreciate him destroying furniture.

“Then we prove we are bonded,” Ghost said decisively. “Show them the truth, and they must leave us be.”

Caius sighed and shook his head, and Kane hugged him even as he frowned. Ghost could see the doubt and the underlying worry that weighed down both alphas’ shoulders, but he had an unshakeable faith in his soulbond with Kane and the support of the deity who created it. They would be fine.

Blog Tour: Sex in C Major By Matthew J. Metzger #interview #giveawy

Welcome all!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Matthew J. Metzger, author of
Sex in C Major.

Hi Matt, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi, and thanks for having me!

I'm British, first and foremost, and I mostly write books set in the same British working-class background that I come from. Pie and peas, terraced houses, yer bird's well fit, and all that. I'm not the kind of guy you'd want living next door to look at me, I'm all tattoos and piercings and a permanent scowl. But that's just my face! I'm generally a bit friendlier than I look. A bit.

I was dragged up as a not-very-good-at-it girl but it turns out I'm trans. I've had girlfriends and boyfriends, but it turns out I'm aroace, too! I'm mad as a box of frogs, both in the fun way and in the not-so-fun way. I'm currently living near Leeds, crunching numbers by day and writing books by night.

And most importantly, I'm owned by my enormous fluffy cat!

So, what have you written?

I started out in queer YA, where I have gay (The Suicidal Peanut, Private, The Italian Word for Kisses), bi (Vivaldi in the Dark and its sequels, The Devil's Trill Sonata and Rhapsody on a Theme) and trans (Spy Stuff) young adult novels. I have another trans one, a sweet romance in a muay Thai club, out in September this year as well.

I moved over into adult romance somewhere along the line, and now I flit between the two. I currently have gay (Thicker Than Bone) and trans (What It Looks Like) adult romances available, with my latest release (Sex in C Major) fitting into the asexual, aromantic and trans categories.

And I just signed a contract for a fantasy novel that retells The Little Mermaid through a trans lens, so I'm even beginning to stray out of my contemporary box!

All my books focus on relationships, and I don't see that changing any time soon. That's where my fascination lies, in how people tick and how they make each other tick. So with Private, I was looking primarily at familial relationships and how they influence who we are and can be vital to our sense of self. In Thicker Than Bone, I was exploring how two brothers with the same basic emotional functions and triggers could turn out so incredibly differently based on their beliefs. With Sex in C Major, I'm poking how sexual relationships overlap with both platonic and romantic relationships, and how aromantic or asexual people can operate within relationships that appear to be romantic or sexual.

Where can we buy or see them?

All my available books are on my website, broken down by identity or category (adult or young adult). I also have a Goodreads page, which links out to the Amazon pages. So far, all of my books are available in both ebook and paperback, something I love because I love a physical book.

(Also for those insane-slash-kind enough, I run a Patreon to raise funds for my final transition surgery, and Patrons of all levels get exclusive sneak peeks at what I'm working on, so if you want to see things waaaay in advance, it's over here.)

I'm mainly stalkable on Twitter, though I exist on Facebook occasionally as well!

What genre are your books?

They're always queer fiction, so at least one (and usually both or more) of the main characters is either not straight or not cisgender. And until Sex in C Major, they were always romance of some description. And until the last contract I signed on 13th May, they were always contemporary. Now I'm edging out of my boxes a little bit, but generally? Generally, I'm a queer contemporary romance writer.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I'm hoping to branch out, essentially, both in terms of business and creativity. So, business-wise, I'd like to expand into different publishing houses and put more eggs in more baskets, so to speak. I love the guys I publish with currently, JMS Books have always looked after me and they really work with you rather than you having to battle through them to get your book published like you do with some houses! But I'm always aware that I run a big business risk by sitting in one place so much, so I've started to branch out again. My next two releases are with Finch Books, the Totally Bound young adult imprint, and Ninestar Press.

Creativity-wise, I'm looking at maybe edging out of my contemporary box. I have a fantasy novel  coming out with Ninestar Press soon, Walking on Water. It's a transgender retelling of The Little Mermaid and I decided to stick with the historical-style fantasy setting for it to flex my fingers a little on the keys. It was a lot of fun, and so far everyone who's seen it has liked it, so maybe I'll dust off my old steampunk and sci-fi drafts and creep into the SFF world a little more.

What are you working on at the minute?

I'm currently writing a pair of romance novels, Tea and Coffee. They're very much sweet romance, quite the opposite to Sex in C Major. They tell the evolving relationship of John, a behemoth of a man with a soft spot as wide as he is, and his definitely-in-charge boyfriend, Chris, and it's essentially about the difference between what other people see and what you really are. Sneak peeks and deleted scenes are currently all over my
Patreon.

After that, who knows! 2017 sees me expanding back outwards into other publishing houses so I'm feeling the pressure a little bit to follow up with them and keep writing. I've also strayed into fantasy, so we'll see if that ends up going anywhere in the long term too.

Other people wanted vanilla sex and dating out of a hookup in a gay bar. But Stefan wanted— this. He wanted to jump from nothing to Daz bending him over the end of the bed and fucking him like he was nothing but a sex doll.

What was he doing?

And yet he kept walking, step by step by step towards the house. A jogger had to go around him; a car hooted angrily as he walked out in front of it. He didn’t care. The house was calling. The man inside was calling. The promise of his fantasies becoming real was calling.

And it was terrifying and stupid and utterly crazy… but Stefan just couldn’t say no.

At exactly eight fifteen, the terror enough to make him throw up and the arousal so intense he could barely walk, Stefan knocked on the door.

Footsteps.

A key in a lock.

Then the door was jerked open, and a hand fisted in Stefan’s coat and hauled him inside.

“Upstairs,” Daz said, slamming the door. “Now. Nobody sees you.”

Stefan scrambled to obey, almost running up the stairs, still in his coat and shoes. He was shoved back into the small bedroom from the night before, and the door slammed behind them.

“Strip,” Daz said.
