Chapter Eight – No such thing as heroes

Zane drove through McCall, hyperaware of every vehicle he passed. The hour wasn't late, and Thanksgiving was less than a week away, evidence by the traffic near the grocery story being heavy. Once he reached the interstate, he relaxed minutely.

He wished he had someone to discuss the evening with. For the first time in a long while, he thought about his mentor, a Scandinavian called Scyld. Zane doubted that was his real name. Assassins didn't divulge their identity to anyone lightly, if ever.

Zane had been ten years old when he first laid eyes on Scyld. He still remembered his grief over his father's sudden death. No one would tell him how his father died, and the casket had been closed at the funeral. Back then, his mother called him Aldrich, which he hated. He loved the name his father had given him, Wulf, but his mother always chided his father for using it, claiming their child wasn't an animal.

Not a week after his father's passing, his Uncle Paul loaded him, along with one hastily packed suitcase, onto a private jet. His mother stood by the plane's exit, watching as Paul knelt next to him. "While you are away you represent me and my name."

"What is going to happen to me?" he asked, never taking his gaze from Paul, doing his best not to cry.

"You will be taught how to kill," Paul said plainly. "More specifically, you will learn how to be my assassin. Everything you do, I will control."

Wulf didn't like the sound of that and his uncle read him easily. "If I hear that you refuse to do what is asked of you, I will hurt your mother. You run away, and I will kill her before I have you tracked dawn. You will watch how long it took your mother to die before you are tortured to death," Uncle Paul narrowed his eyes. "I'm waiting for your answer."

He glanced at his mother, her gaze never rising from the floor. The apple of her cheek was darker where she had applied more makeup to hide the bruise. That morning, a doctor friend of Uncle Pauls' had set the bone in her pinky, taping her last two fingers together.

He turned back to his uncle to see how closely Paul watched him. "If she is ever hurt again…" He tried to put steel in his voice like his father did.

"Do not make threats you cannot backup. Besides, she'll remain right as rain unless you screw up," Paul snarled. "Don't disappoint me."

After his uncle rose to his feet and passed his mother, she hurried to him and hugged him tight. He didn't want to let her go. "I will free us from him," he whispered.

She stiffened, saying just as quietly. "I should have never allowed your father to fill you head with all that mythical champion nonsense. There are no such things as heroes."

Before he could argue, she was gone.

Wulf cried the first leg of the flight to Copenhagen, imagining the worst. Until that trip, he'd been proud that he was as creative as his father. But his uncle had other plans for him and he didn't know if he could live up to them. But if he didn't, then his mother would pay the price for his failure. How was that fair?

By the time the plane landed in Denmark, he'd calmed. He could not plan until he knew what would be expected of him. Neither the flight attendant not the pilots had spoken to him for the flight, so he didn't expect any help from them after they landed. He grabbed his suitcase and pulled it behind him to the plane's exit. He glared at the pilot on his way by and the man dropped his eyes.

At the top of the stairs, he looked over the blacktop, his first look at Denmark was nothing special. He'd heard the pilots talking about landing at this private airstrip outside the city. A car was parked near the hanger, a large man leaning against the bumper. Upon seeing Wulf, he pushed off the vehicle and crossed the tarmac.

Teeth clenched with determination, he descended the stairs, awkwardly dragging the suitcase behind. By the time he reached the bottom step, the man stood waiting. Without saying a word, the man took the case from Wulf and turned, striding back to the car. Wulf hurried to follow, suddenly terrified of being left behind so far from home or anything he knew.

Wulf watched in amazement when the man opened the hood and threw his suitcase inside. Then opened one of the doors waiting for Wulf to get in. The steering wheel was on the wrong side of the car, and when they left the airstrip, they drove on the wrong side of the road. His amazement pushed aside his worry until the man parked at a cottage at the end of a long gravel drive.

When the vehicle was shut off, he didn't get out so neither did Wulf. Warily, he watched the person who was supposed to be his guardian. Dirty blond hair, thick browns, high cheekbones and a square jaw. He looked as if he hadn't shaved for a week. Blue eyes stared back at him as if he too was taking Wulf's measure.

"What has your kin told you about me?" he asked in a thick accent.

Wulf frowned. Paul was no longer his 'kin' but he would keep that to himself. No telling what this man would report back to Paul. "That you will teach me to kill." The man's lips pressed flat. "That if I don't obey you or screw up he'll hurt my mom. If I run away, he will kill my mom and then send someone after me." Wulf paused, considering. "He'd send you after me." Paul hadn't said that, but the man didn't deny it either.

What is on the Reading Radar? #TBR #wishlist

What am I doing? Constant rewrites continue and I've come up with a couple of scenes that I need to add. I thought Constant would be a breezy 35k to work through... It just might come out closer to 50k and I'm perfectly all right with that.

I'm also working on Chapter Ten of Assassin's Retirement. A poly romance with this many love interests is daunting, mainly because I have never attempted to write one like it before. I was thinking over last weekend that it's going to take a long time for a romance to develop between Zane and the others, which means more than one book or a really huge plot. (*laughs at myself because do I write small plots?*)  The thought stumped me for a second. I'm by writing the blog story by the seat of my pants, and thinking about a second book just makes my mind go blank. No joke. (For me) Pantsing a story doesn't lend itself well to thinking further in the further than the next two or three chapters. So I keep my thoughts in the now with the blog story.

In the meantime, what is on the wish list and TBR.

Wu Tien Xin, the silent invisible assassin. Nevarre, the Morrigan's own Shadow. And of course, her first two Blood, Alrik and Daire, inexperienced—but extremely powerful in their own right.

#PactDays : Ice Trans #ValepsianPact

Welcome to Thursday's Pact Days! Today, we have the Ice Trans.

In Alpha Trine, the director of the space station Zeus lived on was an Ice Trans by the name of Autocthan.

A couple of side notes: For a list of species that have been posted so far, see the The People of Valespia page. I'm placing these in alphabetical order so I won't unintentionally place importance on any specie. I will leave off information on the species that will spoil future books. My standard sheet has the same categories for all species. So there will be blank categories just because that species didn't need them.

Species: Ice Trans
Planet: Maritimus
Other races on the planet:
Planetary Terrain: Heavily Iced Planet
Capitol: Nanuuk
Patron Ryo Pardeep:

Description: lives in temperatures ranging from -15 degrees to -100 degrees Celsius. Broad and well-muscled but not as strong as they appear because their bones are hollow. Translucent windwings that attach from their wrist, along the back of their arms to the shoulder blades. Large triangular ears, slit eyes, and short thick fur. They are a cross between a feline and wolf in appearance. The bottom of their feet used to act as ice skates, allowing them to move over the icy surfaces by windskating. (The wind can achieve velocities of up to 300 kilometers per hour.) But with the advancement of their society after moving into cities closer to the warmlands, the majority of their people have developed softer feet, but they have specially designed boots that work well in the icy regions. The tribes in the rural areas still have the hardened feet.

The -100 degrees Celsius are at the poles. Their world has vast frozen oceans accept around the equator. Half the planet's population is in the island cities in the icelands and floating citadels closer to the equator.

They are omnivores with both flat and pointed teeth.

Off planet they take a special serum that keeps them from being overheated. It causes their wings to shrink.
Average height is 2 meters.

Assassin's Retirement: Scion of Beowulf Chapter 7, Part 2 #blogstory

Welcome back to Assassin's Retirement!

Copyright Lexi Ander

All the members of Crimson Comet were still where he left them in the dining room. By the gestures and expressions, they were arguing. Zane never bothered to learn lip reading. It was more of an art than an ability. His mentor told him not to waste the time but now he wished he'd given it a try. He really wanted to know what they were arguing about.

Cord broke away from them and stepped out the back patio, taking a cellphone out of his back pocket and putting it against his ear. "Hey, it's me. No, it didn't."  Cord ran his hand over his beard, tugging. "What happened was that asshole tried to kill Midnight. Yeah. It’s the first time he's targeted anyone other than me. We don’t understand either. If not for Zane, Midnight would be dead. Prince and Zane went after him. No. Prince is not saying what Zane saw, but we could guess with the stench. No, Zane left when Prince eluded to us knowing he's an assassin. Yay, instead of explaining what was going on. We didn't get a change to. He left. I don't know, he might shoot us on sight. I know what you said, but being that candid with someone who is human… I'm sorry, Ella."

Zane ground his teeth. He wasn't able to follow some of the conversation, but that part he understood loud and clear. His manager knew who he was. Cord wrapped up the conversation after asking Ella for help and went back into the house. Prince waited for him and they spoke a few words before Cord moved deeper into the house.

Prince remained in the dining room. He went to the area behind Midnight's chair and pulled several things from the wall, returning to the bank of windows.

"Seriously, does this guy have a death wish or what?"

As Prince gazed outside, he shifted the items from one hand to the other, back and forth. Zane remained very still as Prince's gaze scanned the area. Prince was at the disadvantage, looking out into the dark from a lit space. He wouldn't be able to see what was in the dark, but even with that hinderance, Zane remained still.

After a few minutes, Prince placed what he held on the dining table. He took the slip of paper he hid earlier from his pocket, read it once more before folding it, and placing it on the surface as well. Zane suspiciously watched Prince stride from the room.

Quickly, he lowered himself to the ground where he crouched, indecision warring within him. He cursed at himself, looking back to the house. Anyone of the six men could come back around at any moment. If he went back inside and was caught, what would he say?

Even knowing he was being reckless, he decided his course of action. He ran in a low crouch from the tree cover to the back door. He was glad the automat lights were still on otherwise he wouldn't have even attempted this endeavor.

The French doors were well oiled and unlocked. Zane seethed a little bit. Someone was trying to kill one or all of them and they weren't doing anything to ensure their safety. There was a level of hell for that special kind of stupid. What were they thinking?

Silently, he eased the door shut, hoping that no one was nearby to sense the draft. Staying low he crossed to the table. He listened intently. There was still arguing going on if the raised voices were an indication. As much as Zen wished he'd had a couple of bugs on him to leave behind, or that he could hang around longer to eavesdrop, he reminded himself there were dead bodies in his truck.

Crossing to the table at a low crouch he reached up and took the folded piece of paper. On second thought, he also grabbed the tube-like items under the paper. A nearby noise had Zane scrambling under the dining table. The table cloth hung over the edge, the ends brushing the seats of the chairs. As long as no one was looking at the floor underneath the table, Zane was relatively hidden. He remained absolutely still and silent.

Someone stopped at the place setting for Xander and it sounded like they were eating. Zane's skin itched. One wrong move and he would be found out. He was ready to be gone but was forced to listen to who he expected was Xander, consuming the rest of his interrupted meal while grumbling about stubborn willful mean making things harder than they needed to be. Zane's legs were beginning to cramp and he worries they would hinder his movements when Xander was called to mitigate the ongoing argument. He couldn't hear everything that was said, but he heard his name a couple of times and surmised he was at the heart of the disagreement.

Zane counted to thirty after Xander left, snarling. The patio light had switched off, but he couldn't do anything about that. Listening for another few seconds to ensure someone else didn't come back into the room, Zane hurried from under the table and was out the door in the blink of an eye. The automatic lights switched on but Zane was already sprinting into the forest. He didn't stop until he reached his vehicle. It was past time for him to go home.

Prince stood in the dark room watching the back patio through the sheer drapes. He didn't move when Xander came up behind him, leaning back into Xander's loose embrace. The patio suddenly illuminated. Zane was briefly visible until he disappeared into the trees.

"His heart beat didn't change when I surprised him in the dining room." Xander said before kissing Prince behind his sensitive ears. "Even when he was tracking La Chupacabra, his heart didn't falter. It increased some when he ran after that asshole, but hell, Zane was almost as steady as a rock."

"I left the note and bone darts for him. You shouldn't have surprised him," Prince admonished. "He's an assassin. He could have simple shot you instead of hiding."

Xander shrugged. "I hoped he'd reveal himself. We need discuss not only what he can do for us as well as what we can do for him. He smells, enticing. Alluring in a way I haven't scented since leaving my homeland." Xander's sigh gave away how truly disappointed he was. "Are you sure he will help us? He spooked at the mere hint we knew what he was. Ella told us he was trying to retire. Perhaps we should let him. There has to be someone else as qualified as he is."

Prince stroked down Xander's bare arms, his thick hair tickling Prince's palm. "In my experience, men like him don't retire, not really. They don't know how to be like everyone else. Perhaps they were never meant to be a part of the general population."

"That seems a little fatalistic and an unfair assessment. Not all assassins are alike," Xander reproved.

Prince caught Xander's gaze in the reflection of the window and smiled. "Sometimes I forget how young you are. Yes, there are those who can step away, but they are few and far between."

"And you don't believe Zane is one of them?" Xander nuzzled the nape of Prince's neck through his hair. Prince stiffened and held his breath as one of Xander's hands dipped below the waistline and cupped Prince through his slacks.

Prince groaned, giving Xander his full weight, sure in his belief Xander would catch him. "I guess we shall see."

Deftly he turned in Xander's arms, relishing the way Xander carded his fingers through Prince's hair before grasping the strands hard, jerking Prince's head back. Xander bit Prince's chin, nipping along his throat. Prince moaned with every stinging bite, letting Xander take his mind off assassins, both foe… and possibly friend.

I sent Devil's Heart out to be beta read. I'm going through the second draft of Constant (The Valespian Pact, 3). While on vacation I thought of some things that I needed to change or add, so there are several places where I need to do some rewriting. Everyone wanted his father dead, and now they’re after Calibot. His only defense is the legendary dragon sword, Wyrmblade, his lone bequest for a miserable childhood. Enchanted within the sword’s steel are the secrets to unlock even greater power, perhaps even mastery of The Known World itself. But using its magic could cost Calibot his soul. Worse, this may have been his father’s intention all along.

As he struggles to complete the mad last wishes of the father he loathes, everyone with a stake in The Known World’s future will try to stop him – his power-hungry uncle, the murderer, even an earth fairy bent on revenge. If Calibot fails, he dies. If he succeeds, he’ll lose everything he’s ever loved . . . including himself.

King Zercy of the Kríe. Ruler of the planet’s most formidable species. Man, is he imposing. So regal and larger than life. And way too savagely handsome for Alec’s liking. Alec is forced to spend each evening in the alluring king’s company, each night bound to the seductive king’s bed. Wholly at his mercy. Utterly defenseless, in his own mind and most especially his restless body. His struggle is real. Because the more Alec gets to know Zercy, the more he realizes two things. The Kríe king is damaged—unstable, not right, making him unpredictable and highly dangerous. But he is also innately kind beneath the raging storm that torments him.
