Flash Back Friday

The end of November 2014, Keeping Faith released just two weeks after my father passed away. I didn't do as much promotion as I could've--the reason is sorta obvious.

Earlier this week, I got a pleasant surprise when Rainbow Book Reviews tagged me in a wonderful review for it.

This is the only contemporary series that I've written. The first book, Playing For Keeps, is free novella and is well liked. It started from a story prompt asking for a poly romance of an existing relationship. Most poly/menage stories are about how the people came together and formed the relationship so the request was unique. Playing For Keeps was one of those stories that came to me rather quickly and practically wrote itself. Those stories are the best kind.

People wanted more of the guys and I thought, sure why not and set out to write a sequel.

I learned many different things about myself in the process. One of them being I cannot write a book with the romance being the plot in a sequel. If it was a different couple that I hadn't written about yet, then yes I could. But as a sequel, when the first book already had the romance as the primacy plot, then no.

I mean, really. It seemed wrong to insert something in-between the guys just to have conflict. I like the connection between the three, it is strong. In real life, menages have to be or the relationship will only ever be temporary.

For a lot people, when they get the relationship right, then they don't sweat the small stuff. Plus, the small stuff isn't interesting to write about so that leaves the bigger issues. I touched on one in Keeping Faith, the lack of legal equality for menage relationships, but I didn't want the story to be soapbox. The world we live in is years away from considering marriage for three or more people. I didn't want it to be a soapbox for bullying either. So I focused on the bumps in the road the guys crossed in their careers and family.

Somewhere along the way, it turned into an action and adventure. I liked it. The story revealed the strengths and weakness of the characters. Plus, (I'm trying to say this without giving away spoilers) I liked how part of the story was about different kinds of strengths. Loving someone so much you'd sacrifice yourself for their safety, being the one to save oneself, and being your own hero--especially when you're seen as weak in comparison to others.

There were other things that I enjoyed writing about. The secondary character, The Gentleman, was one. If you hated Trent's father in Playing For Keeps, the disgust will only deepen in Keeping Faith. We learn more about Brock's and AJ's families. AND this is the only published story that has a backdrop of the Christmas Season.

If you haven't looked at the Unshakable Series, give it a chance. It's more than what it seems. :D

Books We Talk About Finalist

Woke up this morning to the news that Keeping Faith was a finalist in the Best Gay Book in a Series category for the Books We Talk About contest.

There will be a little bit of time for the next round. Nominations for Bookquarter 2 will begin July . Then Winners in each category, of each Bookquarter, will go up against each other and the Winner will be “The Book We Talk About”.

To see the other categories and finalist, check out Gay.Guy.Reading And Friends

Until then I'm going to write up a storm and maybe put some serious thought into writing a story for Gent. For a side character, I liked him a lot. If you've read this then you know who and what Gent is. I won't say because I don't want to accidentally give out any spoilers in case you haven't read Keeping Faith. If I do write a story for Gent, it won't be soon because my schedule is full. Besides, I would need to have an idea for a plot of some kind. Hmmm. We'll see. Not making any promises. ^_^

Unshakable Series Going To Paperback, Giveaway

The Unshakable Series started out with a story prompt. (Y'all know how I love those.) Playing For Keeps was born and AJ, Brock, and Trent came alive in my head.

In November of 2014, Keeping Faith was released right after my father passed away. Because of the timing, I didn't do as much self-promotion as I normally would.

Now, on April 17th the paperback combining both Playing For Keeps and Keeping Faith will be released in one volume.

To celebrate the release, I'm giving away 3 paperbacks. You can enter the giveaway until April 24th. The winner announcement will be made on April 25th. Good Luck!!

Reading Reviews

I have to admit that since Keeping Faith released I've been tempted to go to GoodReads or Amazon to read reviews or at the very least check out the star rating so that I can gauge how it's faring.

As a mental health policy, I don't read reviews unless the book has been out a long time--and even then, I do so with a big dose of alcohol courage. I support reviewer rights to express their opinion about the books they read, however they want to express themselves. The hard part is where I go out and willfully read the criticism in an attempt to glean something I can take away to make my stories better.

And honestly, the only thing that I really want to know is if anyone liked the book. I don't need the details unless I need to know how a certain character or plot aspect was received.

So I have a policy. "Don't go hunting trouble."

But that doesn't mean I don't read reviews. I do. Every day. They're just not mine. I'm a reader too and money is tight. With the advent of the e-book, if I find in the first couple of chapters that the book isn't for me, I can't give it away to someone who would enjoy it more than me. Instead, it sits on the virtual book shelf and gathers electronic dust. With a tight budget, I have to be more frugal with my book budget. So I find reviewers who have the sames tastes/likes that I have and gauge whether or not I want to take the final step and purchase the book. ^__^

Every day I get a slew of emails from sites and blogs I subscribe to. (Sometimes it seems I keep adding to the list because there are more and more emails to wade through.) It's great because I can keep a finger on what's coming out. I share book blasts and giveaways, read reviews, and occasionally I'll come across a review for one of my own books.

I'll admit that I'm not afraid to read reviews from the websites I subscribe to. It's a trust thing. I've read the reviews of their reviewers (what a mouthful) and even if they don't like the book, the information is clear and constructive. I still hold my breath while reading because I want people to like my stories.

With the release of Keeping Faith, I've had this itch to find out what people think. Contemporary is not my writing comfort zone. Many people loved Playing For Keeps and I felt like I was messing with fire writing the sequel.

I braved GoodReads and there was all of three written reviews and I admit it was really, really nice to read they liked the book in varying degrees. Not everyone liked the book, and I'm okay with that. I did glean some useful information from the reviews--predictability and the kidnapping scene wasn't taken as serious I thought it was, but like I said, writing contemporary isn't my strong point. I would like to get better at it which means learning from my previous endeavors.

So just in case Tina or Gigi read the blog... Thank you for the great reviews! <3 <3 <3

Caroline at Prism Book Alliance gave Keeping Faith 4 Stars.

"I love reading menage but they don’t always work well. This one has three very distinct characters that bring very different things to their relationship and it is well balanced and loving."

Thank you, Caroline!!

Playing For Keeps received and great review as  well from MM Good Book Reviews. KathyMac gave it 4 Hearts.

"This is my first read by Lexi Ander and I really enjoyed this story. So much so that I will be starting the follow-up next. Even though we didn’t get any history on how the three became a unit, the author does a great job showing how in love they are. The plot was executed well from the time frame involved and it was a gratifying story. The dialogue is funny but serious when the situation called for it. Lexi shows depth and meaning in her sentences allowing the reader to visualize the scene."
Thank you, KathyMac!!

FInal Stop in the Keeping Faith Blog Tour With Giveaway

"Perfect" Hero... Err... Or is it Antihero?

Good Morning!!

Today is the final day of the Keeping Faith blog tour.

Being the last stop on the tour does have some perks. One of them being waiting until the last minute to write this post!  ^_^

First off, I need to thank Freddy MacKay for sending me a list of questions to help me today's topic. What makes the perfect hero in your book?

Answer: The character you don't expect to be the hero.

In real life, heroes come in all shapes and sizes, from all walks of life. Sometimes they are the people you don't see until they step up in the middle of a crisis. They are people who act with heart and compassion. They don't have to be strong or athletic or have a background in civil service. Being a hero doesn't mean you have to save people from a burning building. Sometimes all it take is stepping forward or speaking up. Just Joe Schmo doing the right thing without regard to his or her own welfare. A hero.

Keeping Faith is contemporary fiction, with fiction being the operative word in that phrase. Just like what goes on in sex scenes in a romance novel (defiantly planning a post on that subject), the experience is fluffed up a bit because we want to root for the characters, feel good, and have a happy ending. Sometimes we want angst and heartbreak but we always, always want that HEA.

I'll be the first to admit that the situation Trent, Brock, and AJ find themselves in--well, in real life that happy ending would be a 1-2% probability. So you have to suspend disbelief in a couple of chapters but I did try to make the experience as real as possible.

I have to say the happy-ever-after wouldn't have been achieved without the part our antihero played. I happened to fall in love with Aldrich as he came alive on the page. Some of you may like him, some of you won't. Is he a hero? Yes or no, I'll let you decide.

Today's exclusive excerpt I have to handle carefully because I didn't want to give out spoilers. Where I skipped a spoiler paragraph there is an ellipse. The two sections flowed together quite well despite the missing piece. If you read the exclusive excerpt over at Toni Grffin's on Monday, you would've briefly met Aldrich. Today's look at him is a little deeper. If you didn't get a chance to read it then you can find the link on the list below for the tour schedule.

Thank you for stopping by and reading! I hope you enjoy the exclusive excerpt. Happy Holidays!!

Something to note about the giveaway: the more comments the more winners. Also, go back to the other blog stops and leave a comment there as well. On December 9th all the blog stops will draw a random winners and I'll send out an e-book copy of Keeping Faith to the winners.

Side Note: If you haven't read Playing For Keeps, it is a free read that you can find on Fireborn's website or over at All Romance (ARe). I would suggest reading it first before jumping into Keeping Faith.

Excerpt:

He didn't lock the car when he climbed out of the sedan. No one would dare steal it, especially with the lookout not far away. Grabbing the drink carrier and the bag of breakfast sandwiches, Aldrich crossed the street with his bounty and approached the house with the teenager sitting on the porch steps.

The kid stared at him warily, but didn't say anything when Aldrich sat next to him, placing the bag between his feet so he could withdraw a cup of orange juice from the drink carrier before handing the other to the teenager. The boy hesitated before accepting the cup, lifting the lid to smell the juice as if he didn't trust Aldrich not to slip him something.

Aldrich didn't comment on the lack of trust. He didn't eat or drink what others provided to him, it would be stupid of him if he did. Instead, he dug into the bag for a couple of breakfast sandwiches, placing the bag at the boy's feet. Chewing slowly, he watched the house across the street. There was no external indication the building was occupied. A police car driving by would never suspect Bishop's men currently hid inside the dilapidated structure.

"You dress like a pansy," the boy said around a mouthful of sandwich. "If anyone in the neighborhood wore clothes like that they would have their asses beat on a regular basis."

"In the world I move in, my appearance is misdirection," Aldrich replied before popping the last piece of egg and cheese biscuit into his mouth.

The teenager chewed, his expression thoughtful. "So you're saying you dress like a douchebag because it causes people to underestimate you."

Aldrich took a sip of the orange juice. "People who dress in all black, wear leathers, and ride a motorcycle, they're advertising they believe themselves to be an exemplary badass. Some people may steer clear of them but some would take it as an invitation to challenge them, to test them and see if they were better. But moving around like this"—Aldrich indicated his light colored boat pants, cream jacket, and three button plaid vest—"most people will look at me and see what?"

"A pansy assed weak man who would be easy to take down and rob."

"Exactly. The majority of people will walk by and sneer at me disdainfully. That's okay because I couldn't care less what others think. My enemy will look at me and underestimate me."

"What makes you think I'm not your enemy?"

"Because I'm paying Caesar to be my ally right now. When I leave, I'll go back home and never will our paths cross again. And if they do, you won't recognize me."

The kid chewed the last of the breakfast sandwich, seeming to think about what Aldrich said.

Aldrich mentally reviewed the information he wanted to impart to the Cubans. He wasn't by any means new to this game. His uncle had pulled him out of boarding school when he was young and sent him to Europe where he tutored with the best private assassin in the business. Now at the age of twenty-nine he'd been doing Bishop's bidding for a long time. This was all he knew how to do and even though he carefully guarded his identity, he could only be lucky for so long. One day he'd make a mistake and he would be caught or killed.

....

The creak of the porch's floorboards brought Aldrich out of his musing. The man he'd been waiting for had arrived. Aldrich turned and looked up at Alejandro where he leaned against a post. He'd been waiting for the Cubans to approach him knowing he wouldn't meet with Caesar personally but was a little surprised Caesar sent his second in command.

Alejandro looked at the boy sitting next to Aldrich. "Raymon, go see your madre. She needs you to take her to the store. Come back afterwards."

After thanking Aldrich for breakfast, Raymon left. Slowly, Aldrich rose to his feet. "Nice to see you, Alejandro."

Alejandro stared at Aldrich, his dark, dead eyes giving nothing away. He thought at one time Alejandro might have been a good-looking man but a hard life had scarred his features to the point that only the most careless individuals weren't automatically wary of him when he entered a room.

"There is a rumor, amigo, that Paul Bishop is looking to bring his cartel to Miami."

Aldrich frowned even as he grinned on the inside. "I've heard the rumors as well, but his future plans aren't the reason why I'm here. Mr. Bishop is angry with the father of Trent Harte and I’m here to convey his displeasure. I've heard Mr. Bishop is having trouble with his supplier but discussions of moving wouldn't be shared with someone like me. I'm not in his inner circle. I guess we'll know if he starts sending more men to Miami."

Alejandro's prolonged stare made Aldrich itch to move. Despite what he’d told the boy, he was under no illusion the Cubans were his friends, regardless of how much money he'd given them. Every time he drove into their territory, Aldrich stayed hyperaware, waiting for the moment when the Cubans decided he overstayed his paid-for welcome. He played a dangerous game with them now. If he wasn't careful, if any of his meticulous research was faulty, if he hadn't read the personalities correctly to set off their triggers, then they would kill him.

Keeping Faith Release Day!

How did I end up with a release on Black Friday? That's sorta cool.

I keep wondering how to market my only holiday story. Many seasonal stories set this time of year are saccharine sweet, light, and fun.

Then there's mine, Keeping Faith, which has the holiday fun mixed with some nail-biting suspense.

Simply said, it isn't your typical holiday story. So if you're looking for something with a bite that gives you both the warm fuzzies of the seasonal traditions and makes you gasp, unable to put the book down.. well... then this is the story for you. :)

Updated! All Links are up! Woot!Just a side note. Keeping Faith is the sequel to Playing For Keeps which you can find for free download at ARe and Fireborn Publishing websites.

A side note of a side note of a side note: Fireborn told me that the book will go up on 3rd party websites over the next week. The one live link at this time is the publisher's. I will post the other links as they come up and update this posting as well. Thank you for your patience!

Sort of behind on my blog posts. :-/ I've been pushing to get projects finished and quite frankly it's been exhausting.

Keeping Faith was submitted last week and I'm waiting to hear back from the publisher.

I reviewed the Twin Flames galley, made a couple of adjustments and returned it this week. I got to see the full cover on it and I'm dying to get this in print. The ebook is up on pre-order at the publisher Less Than Three Press, and as of yesterday, All Romance. Remember that if you order directly from the publisher before October 1st you'll get a 15% discount.

The last immediate editing that I'm working on is for Songs of the Earth. I want to have that done by... well... hopefully tonight.

I have to admit that I have the writing blues. With the exception of blog posts I haven't written a new word toward a story in five weeks. I dream of new stories that leave me feeling antsy when I get up because I can't do anything about it until all of this editing is cleared from my plate.

Even then, when I'm finished with Songs of the Earth the next project is a pronunciation guide for Alpha Trine & Striker. Which honestly is so flippin' ass cool that the project will probably go really fast.

I just remembered that I also need to look over Werewolf's Tale & A Druid Sword so I can submit it. *covers eyes* More editing. At least it's not on a timeline-urgent-people-are-waiting-on-it-you-slow-poke.

After that I need to write seven blog posts for Twin Flames release week, hopefully this weekend. I had hoped that I would have time to write a small prequel for the blog tour and I don't think that I'll have time. I'm going to try anyway. It will strong depend on how long it will take me to write 10k from Ushna's perspective and have a down and dirty edit done before September 24th. Which sounds fairly easy but today is the 12th. I'm going to Chicago the 15th, seeing Ed Sheeran in concert with Sue and Piper on the 16th, and then driving back home on my birthday, the 17th. ALL of my GRL stuff needs to be ordered by the 18th. That would leave me five days to work some magic. We'll see what happens.

All of this editing mojo has tampered with my sleep schedule to the point I'm going to bed at the crack of dawn. I'm trying to fix that now or next week will be hell. Piper is going to smack me upside the head if I fall asleep at Ed's concert. ^_^  Wish me luck because going to need it. And coffee, lots and lots of coffee.

Deadlines, Galley, and Edits Oh, My!

C.R.A.Z.I.N.E.S.S.

Not kidding. I'm surprised I can find my head with everything that is going on. This will probably read more like a newsletter. So much has been happening!

Earlier this month I submitted The Aurora Conspiracy to Less Than Three Press for their Keeping The Stars Running Anthology. I'm waiting to hear back from them, hoping they like it. I adore this short story but I'm biased.

I also submitted Ruby Red Booty Shorts & A Louisville Slugger. Hopefully I'll have some good news for this series in a few weeks. The second book in the series, Werewolf's Tale & A Druid's Sword, is finished and has been sitting on my hard drive collecting metaphorical dust. It needs some good editing... which I need to get to soon.

I received the galley for Twin Flames. The re-release date is scheduled for October 1st. I've been contacting places to host me for the blog tour. I have three spots left: October 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

London Burden designed the new cover for Twin Flames. I adore this cover. She's also forming the bookmark to match. Yay!

*Points Up* Did you see my new banner. Again, Breathless Design knocked it out of the ball park. She also made me some fantastic bookmarks. I think that I'll have like a series of them done for each re-release of different characters. We'll see what happens but I'm really stoked with what I have right now. No, I'm not going to show you--yet.

Swag, swag, and more swag. Pre-orders is you are going to GRL and wish to buy a paperback ahead of time. Look at the top, I have tab with the order form. :-)

Earlier this week I received Twin Flames swag that I ordered for the blog tour and for GRL. Since this series is Fantasy/Menage/M-preg, that's like a small-of-a-small niche in the M/M romance genre so I didn't go too crazy when I ordered non-paper swag. There will be a limited supply of real ceramic coffee cups for GRL. Closer to the blog tour date, I'll post pictures of the prizes that I have for the re-release. I'm really happy with the quality and will probably order something similar again for Songs of the Earth re-release.

Speaking of which, guess what was in my mailbox this morning??? The first round edits for Songs of the Earth

Color me tickled... and overwhelmed!!

And talking about GRL and swag. Y'all remember the sketches I did leading up to the release of Striker (The Valespian Pact, 2)? I picked out the best ones and asked Breathless Design  to help me make them into trading cards. I've decided I will continue to do character sketches and for each new Valespian Pact release. The best ones will be added to the trading card portfolio. I'm so excited to see where this project will go!

The lovely Aisha Akeju designed the fantastic covers for Alpha Trine and Striker. She also helped me with a bookmark for Alpha Trine for GRL swag and I will see about having a bookmark made for Striker as well, but that will probably be a couple weeks away.

*waves arms vigorously in the air* it looks like Alpha Trine and Striker are going to audiobook. I'm not flippin' kidding. Dude! Dude! Dude! I just... you have no idea how freakin' stoked I am. *runs around in frantic circles*

Four days are left in the month and I'm pushing to have the first draft of Keeping Faith revised and edited by month end. Revising and editing doesn't always go as fast as anyone wants and the frustration level is high. It looks as if Keeping Faith has a home and so I want to get it there as soon as possible but not until I'm satisfied with the end result.

With Keeping Faith nearing completion, I wanted to put a fresh face to the first book, Playing For Keeps, which Breathless Design did fabulously. Fireborn Publishing has offered to host this little free story on their website. I actually need to write a blurb for this before I send Playing For Keeps over to them.

What's next, you ask?

Well, in the editing sphere, Werewolf's Tale & A Druid's Sword for one and the huge 100+k manuscript for Fate & Destinies.

For writing? I will be finishing the Sumeria's Sons series with Dragon's Eye and Releasing Chaos. I'm so very stoked to write these last two books. With everything that needs to happen to reach that HEA I'm switching it up a bit and you'll have not only Tristan's POV but Ushna and Nikita's as well. I'll also have a couple of free short stories that will fit between the books from side characters. So don't miss out on those either. If you weren't aware, I'm planning two offshoot series, Sumeria's Magi and Sumeria's Children. ^_^

And if there is enough time before the end of the year, start writing Bespoken (The Valespian Pact, 3). The next books of this series will be written close together and somewhere in there I'll have to fit writing the rest of the I.O.N. series as well.

Are you as exhausted as I am??

August has been a busy month, a fantastic month, and an exhausting month. And GOOD, so very, very good. I cannot tell you how thankful I am to be this busy.

Love you guys! Thank you for making the next couple of months as busy as they are.

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

New Cover for Playing For Keeps

Last year I wrote a contemporary menage from a story prompt and titled it, Playing For Keeps. This year I penned the sequel, Keeping Faith. I actually finished the first draft tonight. There is always this rush when I finish writing a story... then I remember that I have to type up, which is usually okay. But since I revise and edit as I type it up, the end result takes a little longer than I'd sometimes like.

But tonight I'm on that "I finished it" high. Doubly so because last night I received the new cover for Playing For Keeps. Breathless Design did a wonderful job with this. It was like she just plucked the image from my head. When I received the mock up I was flailing about, unable to tell or show anybody--which is quite excruciating. I dragged my husband upstairs and made him look because I needed someone to squee with me. Yeah, he didn't squee, but neither did he make fun of me when I was bouncing around him like a puppy mainlining caffeine.

Tonight I wrote The End at the bottom of the page for Keeping Faith. It's the continuation of Trent, Brock, and AJ's lives about six months after they moved to Florida. Now, I have to say this isn't the typical M/M/M story. Definitely not the typical holiday story either. It's a romantic suspense set around the Christmas Holiday. It's not light and fluffy. The title Keeping Faith plays a part in the plot's undercurrent in various ways. I hope readers will enjoy it. With luck, I might have some other good news regarding Keeping Faith but that's a couple weeks away yet.

Oh, and the title for this very short series? Unshakable

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

Polyamorous Relationships - Marraige

My blog post today was simply going to be about what I discovered while writing on my current WIP. It sort of turned serious in a place or two, and will probably be controversial. Opinions will differ from mine and I'm perfectly fine with that. The only thing I ask, is that if you comment, please be respectful. Thank you. :)

My current writing project is Keeping Faith, the sequel to Playing For Keeps. It's set in the December holiday season and I wanted Trent, Brock, and AJ to have some kind of special tradition for the Christmas season. If you're familiar with Playing For Keeps, you know that Trent was selected in the NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins.

Respectively, this places his income way above Brock and AJ's who are both working part-time jobs and going to college. I thought it would be cool if the boys shared finances, Living Wills, beneficiary and medical authority authorizations. I wanted to shape them into a family in every way possible even if they don't have the legal certificates binding them together.

Let's face it, people living in such relationships aren't going to be allowed to marry for some time. When most people think of poly relationships they automatically conjure up the man with twelve wives, sometimes sister wives, who live in religious communes. Am I wrong? Growing up, that was what was shown on the TV specials over and over again. I also remember the one show where an agency was going in and helping women to escape these types of relationships, some of them were shoved into the life style as teenagers. Many times these women are undocumented--home births, no jobs outside the home, no social security card, absolutely nothing that let the outside world know that they exist. It's scary and horrifying and I do not begrudge all the parents who clutch their children and say 'not in my lifetime.'

In my opinion, that is what happens when you make something illegal. Real living, breathing, people slip through the cracks and no one is looking for them because the majority of the people will abide by the law. When something like that makes an ABC special, it's just a reminder how horrible poly "relationships" can be to the general populous... and it is one of the first things they think of when someone brings up the topic. And it's skews perception. I mean, really, it's like saying all marriages are filled with domestic abuse.

So I was trying to shape Trent, AJ, and Brock's finances as much like a married couple as LEGALLY possible. There are documents that a lawyer can draw up for things like medical authority, to make sure a someone has access to you while you are in the hospital and is consulted on treatment. But sharing finances, that is a whole other ballpark. In a marriage, people share banks accounts, have their names on leases, mortgages, and deeds without being assigned a TAX. Laugh all you want. Taxes are a nasty business and people who make a lot of money spend a good deal of time trying to find ways out of paying it. I was no different when I was trying to create this household for my guys.

Let me explain. Trent now has a multi-million dollar contract to play football for the Miami Dolphins. By law, he can "gift" an individual up to $14,000 a year. Anything over he pays a "gift tax." Any cars, homes, or businesses that Trent buys or invests in, and puts AJ or Brock's name on, if the value is over $14,000 then there is penalty, sorry, tax for that "gift". Now if Trent legally married AJ, then Brock could receive $28,000 because he could be gifted $14,000 from Trent AND $14,000 form AJ.

Now, I'm all about people paying their taxes because they are used for our infrastructure (unless some sorry SOB misappropriates the money). And it really peeves me when people who make a ton of money search for ways to get around the law. Most states have laws on the books for civil unions. If a man and woman live together for seven years, they are considered by law as married. If a couple of women live together for seven years, they are roommates. I wanted my guys to be a family. They aren't people who are taking advantage of the young or abusing their power over one another. And Yes, I know they are fictional but there are people out there in the world who live in poly relationship that are equal, loving, between consenting adults, and just as loyal and committed as a standard couple.

Making Trent choose between Brock and AJ to marry just felt wrong, and had the potential to alienate one lover over the other. My husband told me not to worry about the financial issues of my characters, "You write fiction." But it does play into the story of them being in a menage relationship, a burden they have to deal with and bear. Even though it isn't integral to the plot, it is one of the factors that make up their life. It will have a cause and effect, and something I can't ignore.

So the next time you see a story about a young sportsman who buys his momma a house or car, remember he paid out the nose twice for the "gift."

Excerpt from Keeping Faith

Hello from Vacation... well, not really. I set this up before I left. :)

I thought I would share a rather long excerpt of my current WIP, Keeping Faith, with y'all today. Last year I wrote a free read, Playing for Keeps. This the sequel to that short story. In Playing for Keeps, Trent, Brock, and AJ are in college and under a lot of pressure when their relationship is whispered across campus, endangering their future careers. Trent's father, William Hart, pressured him to leave AJ and Brock. It's a nice story, about 22k, so not very long.

Like I said, Keeping Faith is the sequel and we'll be revisiting our three love birds, getting to know them better, and see how their relationship will hold up under external pressure. This will lean more towards a romantic suspense instead of the usual contemporary angsty relationship plot.

The first several chapters I may have to shuffle around. I think there is some unwritten rule to not start out the book with a scene that doesn't include your main characters but that is what my Chapter One currently has, secondary characters who are essential to the plot. What this also does is set the tone of the book. I won't lie, Sammy and Aldrich are favorites of mine. I hope you like them as well. And because I'm bored, the excerpt is the full first chapter (3k). I think there is some rule on that as well, but as you can see, I'm being a bit rebellious. :D

Keeping Faith

CHAPTER ONE

Sammy applied more powder to the bruise below her left eye. The blue-green swelling sat atop the apple of her cheekbone. The dark smattering of freckles that usually covered her cheeks and nose were barely visible under the thick foundation, and powder and yet the bruise was still faintly visible. She had already reapplied the eyeliner twice now but couldn't control the wayward tears that streaked the meticulously applied make-up. She couldn't appear before Paul less than perfect.

Taking a deep fortifying breath to steel her nerves for the meeting she would have with her boyfriend, Paul Bishop. Her packed suitcase sat on the foot of the bed. Soon she'd leave, out from underneath his controlling thumb. She had known what she was getting into when she became involved with the head of the west coast mob. She hadn't realized that she would be with him this long. The more time she spent with Paul, the more she wanted to take a gun and riddle him with holes, especially after last night. A small shiver shook her body at the memory.

Two more deep breaths, she picked up the tube of lipstick and applied it to her bow shaped lips with a surprisingly steady hand. Paul served a purpose, she reminded herself. Her search was almost over if she could make it through seeing Paul one more time, without slipping up. The thought of her trip to Miami pushed away the dark memories causing her to smile at her image in the vanity mirror. After all of this time, of all the sacrifices would be worth what waited for her in Miami. She was so close to her goal.

Running the hairbrush through her long wavy brunette locks one last time, a light squirt of Paul's favorite perfume she rose from the vanity and approached the black Gucci dress hanging on the back of the closet door. The sleeves were long, perfect for hiding the additional bruising on her forearms and upper wrists. The scoop neck would showcase the heavy necklace Paul had selected before he left her alone this morning. The skirt reached her knees but she didn't have to worry about covering dark blemishes on her legs.

Slipping the dress on, it hung in perfect silky waves. She tugged gently on the cuffs ensuring no mars on her skin were revealed. It wasn't her fault she bruised but if one of Paul's colleagues caught a glimpse of one, Paul made her surfer for making him appear bad to men he respected or who he needed to respect him. Beating a woman was passé nowadays, something only thugs did, not men as influential as Paul Bishop. She promised herself never again would a man raise a hand to her.

Ever.

Donning black Prada heels, the tasteless necklace Paul used to proclaim his ownership of her and her handbag and exited the bedroom suite. The shoes clacked against the marble floor. Sammy allowed herself a moment to detest the noise, just as she deposed the mansion and all the evil hidden by the glamour and money. The place had been sucking the life out of her soul but another half an hour and she would be free.

One of Paul's musclemen, Marco Kinsley, stood outside the office double doors. He was one of the few of Paul's men who never made her feel like a piece of meat. Paul required those who entered the house or who would be seen with him to wear suits. As always, Marco appeared very monochrome in his black suit, black shirt, and black tie. He never wore another color. Once when Sammy felt a little bold, she asked him why he chose all black. Black, he had said, hides the most gruesome of messes at first glance. After that, Sammy didn't ask him anymore questions. "Good morning, Ms Teasdale, the boss is waiting."

Sammy gifted him with a bright smile. "Thank you, Marco." He hurriedly open the door and stepping aside to allow her to enter the room.

Paul's office was designed to intimidate. His large walnut desk and chair were austere enough to impress to first time visitors into thinking Paul sat on a throne, a place of power. Sammy had witnessed both good and bad men crushed in this very room. As a house rule, murder was never conducted within the mansion or on its grounds, but that didn't mean the demise of individuals wasn't planned here.

"Samantha, dear, the care is ready to take you the airport." Paul merely glanced up at her from the contents of the manila file he studied.

Sammy gave him a wide smile but only after faltering for a moment. He caught the hesitation. "Are you still upset over last night? Did James not deliver my apology this morning?"

She fingered the ting, a five carrot sapphire set in a circle of diamonds. She hated it. "You're gift is beautiful and I am thankful. You are too generous. I only worry I'll upset you again."

Paul finally sat straight and gave her his full attention. He was a handsome man with a charming smile and cold eyes. He was in his mid-forties but he had turned prematurely gray after he turned thirty. Now his hair was silvery white and instead of taking away from his appearance, the look added the air of refinement to him. Paul held out a manicured hand to her. Sammy forced her feet to move, loathing to touch him, if only briefly.

Once her palm slid against his, he pulled her down into his lap. "I already explained last night it wasn't your fault. William Harte will pay for what he made me do last night." He ran knuckle under the covered bruise on her cheek.

His cellphone rang and after glancing at the name on the screen he answered. "Your status?"

Sammy wanted to move from his lap but his firm grip on her hip told her to stay. He would tell her when he wanted her to get up.

"What do you mean he hasn't touched his accounts? Harte is a pampered elitist. He doesn't know the meaning of going without. He must have other accounts you haven't found. Dig deeper, I want that man found!"

Her gaze scanned the desk. A silver five by seven framed photo of Paul's elegant wife, Patricia, sat next to the computer monitor. At first she had been guilt ridden when she discovered Paul was married. That was until she met Paul's wife. Patricia came from an influential family in Europe. For two weeks every year, Patricia came to the states to visit with Paul. On one such visit, Patricia had walked into Sammy's suite of rooms in a flourish of expensive silk and designer accessories. She appraised Sammy as if she were an item up for auction. "You're a pert one, aren't you? (need to give Sam's age here) As always, Paul, your tastes are impeccable." With a pat on the cheek, Patricia accepted Paul's proffered elbow, the two leaving Sammy standing in the middle of the room in stunned silence.

Paul hung up the phone with an angry growl.

"Sweetheart, I'm going to miss my plane." Sammy refrained from trying to wiggle away. Patience was the key when dealing with Paul.

"I won't be joining you in Miami with this unfinished business with Harte. You will cut your trip short and be back here at Christmas Eve." Paul strikers her thigh, his fingers stopping at the edge of the dress's hem.

"Of course," she replied as if it were already a given.

Paul patted her leg, the signal for her to rise. Dutifully she leaned forward to give him a kiss. He caught her chin. "Not now, you're wearing lipstick and I'll never get all of it off." He grasped her chin and turned her head where he pecked her on the cheek. "Now, go."

Sammy moved from his lap and adjusted her skirt so it fell properly. "I'll call you when I arrive," she promised. Not that she would be returning.

Paul grunted in acknowledgement and she knew he had already mentally dismissed her, the manila folder opened once more. Before she could cross the room again, the oak door opened and man only known as The Gentleman, Gent for short, entered the room. He paused upon seeing Sammy. Her steps faltered. Of all the people to run into before leaving.

She was one of a handful of people who knew The Gentleman's name and relationship to Paul. Sammy never ever let on she knew their secret for it was something they closely guarded. She doubted she would live long if they suspected she knew Paul's personal assassin was his sister's only child, Aldrich.

Sammy's heat pounded in her chest. Even knowing what she did, Sammy couldn't bring herself to dislike him too much. Aldrich had always been kind and courteous. She knew he was dangerous for she had heard the rumors, bits of conversation here and there that hinted out the viciousness of Paul's 'dog'. Maybe she had spent too much time living in this world of ambiguous morals, black deeds, and cut throat business. When she looked at Aldrich she didn't see the monster other claimed him to be. She guessed him to be around her age of twenty-five but she couldn't be sure. She found she would miss seeing him even if he sometimes scared the hell out of her. Not because of what people said about him but because of everyone who associated with Paul, Aldrich was the only one who'd possible discover her true identity and why she had become Paul's mistress.

"Samantha, I'm glad I caught you before you left."

She held out both of her hands, a ritual since she first met him four years ago. A head taller than her, he bent at the waist slightly to clamps and kiss the backs of both of her hands. A lock of wiry dark brown hair fell to cover one of his crystal blue eyes as the soft hair of his close cropped beard brushed her knuckles. She held her breath as his thumb brushed the cuff of her sleeve, barely revealing a purple bruise. He stared for a second before his lips brushed the discolored skin, his thumb covering it back up as he straightened. Whereas Paul wore a dark blue pinstripe three piece suit, Aldrich wore a tan Gucci jacket and vest, with a plaid button up shirt and a blue and red striped tie. His white trousers were rolled up at the ankle to reveal he wore no socks with his two tone brown and white wingtips. She knew Paul detested his nephew's choice of clothing and she suspected Aldrich dress as such to annoy Paul.

Those light blue eyes pinned her when a small slip of paper was pressed into her palm. "This place won't be the same without you around. You do bring a ray of sunshine to this tomb."

"Quit flirting with Samantha, she needs to catch a plane and doesn't have time to dawdle with you." Paul sighed in exasperation.

Aldrich gaze squinted slightly as the back of his knuckles grazed her sore cheek under the hidden bruise. For a breath, his eye turned to ice and just as quickly the look disappeared. She couldn't stop the shiver that crawled up her spine.

"I won't keep you. Have a safe trip." His low voice held a hint of warmth that Sammy dared not analyze.

"It was nice seeing you," she replied before leaving the room. The butler stood at the foyer and opened the door for her. The Mercedes waited at the bottom of the steps, with her bodyguard holding open the rear door. Gracefully she slid into the buttery soft leather seat. She didn't dare glance at the note until sat on the plane.

"Don't come back." Was written in an elegant hand along with a bank name and account number. She tucked the slip of paper into her purse swallowing down the nausea that threatened her suddenly delicate stomach.

****

From the window in Paul's office, Aldrich watched the Mercedes carry Samantha away. Would she heed his advice? He hoped so for it would soon be very messy around here.

"Are you going to tell me why you're here or will you simply stand there like a stick in the mud?" Paul groused, not looking up from what he read.

He knew he made his uncle nervous. To everyone else, Paul commanded him, but they both knew better. Long ago, Paul found out he could push Aldrich only so far. He may have been raised to kill for his family but he chose who. His uncle was still pissed he refused to kill the undercover FBI agent who had been snooping around. By the time Paul had contacted another assassin to dispose of the agent, the FBI had received an anonymous tip their man had been made, and his number would be up if he wasn't removed immediately. Aldrich had no qualms killing scum but even he held to a set of standards. Some lines he refused to cross.

Paul shifter nervously in his chair. Pulling an envelope out of the inner pocket, he crossed the room and handed it to Paul. His uncle snatched the envelope in a flare of temper. Aldrich watched his uncle closely, not missing the flair of nostril, the tightening around the eyes as he had approached Paul's desk.

"Imagine my distress when I came home for a visit to find my mother in the hospital. They said you paid her bill." The cold ball of anger in Aldrich's chest pulsed with each beat of his heart. Because of what he did for his uncle he was not allowed to see his mother, go to her home, or meet her where others would see them. None could suspect they were related. She would be in danger if word got out the mysterious Gentlemen had a weakness. There were people who would use her to get at him and he couldn't allow it. Just because he couldn't see her didn't mean that he didn't watch her. Over the last couple of years a trend had started, one that Paul meticulously worked to keep covered up.

He had been separated from her since the death of his father at the age of ten. His uncle had stepped in and sent him to a boarding school overseas until his turned fifteen. Withdrawn from school, his training began, overseen by his uncle. Regardless of what Paul instructed, Aldrich's mentor passed on some sage advice. There would become a time when it would be time to clean out Bishop's house. Aldrich would need to choose carefully the when and the how. He would have only one opportunity, leave no loose ends. When the time came, be ruthless.

"What kind of man do you take me for? Of course I take care of my baby sister, you don't have to worry about her. I'll handle Daryl personally." Paul pulled a set of pictures out of out of the envelope. The photos were of Aldrich's mother in the hospital bed, her once beautiful face so deformed the surgeon couldn't guarantee she'd appear the same after the surgery that would repair he shattered eye socket.

Aldrich drew a second envelope from his inside pocket and dropped it on the desk. "Don't bother."

Paul stared a long moment at the sleek black rectangle, the envelopes Aldrich reserved for delivering the results of a kill mission. Without touching the picture, Paul dumped the single photo on the desk. He'd give Paul credit for not cringing at the sight of his best friend, Daryl Owens, cut into a half dozen pieces and arranged neatly in a freshly dug hole.

The vein on the right side of Paul's forehead popped as he ground his teeth. "Why?" he asked with surprising calm.

"Now, now, Uncle." Aldrich allowed the chill of contempt to fill his voice. "You made sure I had the finest training to shape me into the tool you desires. I am very good at what I do. Research is just as important as how many ways I can murder a man without leaving evidence. Did you believe you could hide the fact this is the fourth time in two years that Daryl had beat her to the point hospitalization was required? Did you think I wouldn't find out you know and hid it."

"Aldrich—"

"She was your responsibility. She was injured in your care by your best friend. That is not taking care of family. That,"—he jabbed a finger at the graphic photograph—"that is taking care of family." Fear flickered across Paul's cool demeanor. "You made me a promise, Paul. What I do for you ensures her security and safety until my inheritance came to me when I turn thirty." Inheritance that Aldrich's grandparents deigned to include their two children in. Paul blackmailed his way into have executorship transferred to him, effectively giving control of Aldrich's monthly stipend. Paul had made his fortune and had not need of his parent's money. Aldrich's mother on the other hand was dependent on Aldrich.

"Yes, she's in my care and I'll deal with the situation as I see fit! As we agreed, you are no longer a part of her life. Should I tell that her darling boy isn't romping around Europe but a paid assassin? How do you think she would look at you then?" Paul grabbed and threw the photo of Daryl. It glided off the desk to gall over the side between the desk and the wall. "Never stick your nose in my business again or you might find it cut off. I made you who you are and I can take it all away."

A knock sounded at the door before Marco stuck his head in. "Dutch is here, Boss."

"Both of you come in. Gentleman, you stay. I have a job for the three of you." Paul grabbed the pictures on the desk top and threw them in a desk drawer.

Marco opened the door wider allowing Lance Easton, known by the self-chosen nickname of Dutch, entered with an over confident swagger. Regardless of Paul's insistence on a dress code, Aldrich believed there wasn't a suit that would allow Dutch to disappear in polite company. Sleeves of tattoos extended past Dutch's wrists to cover the back of both hands and few of his fingers. His neck from his collarbone to the underside of his jaw was covered with colorful blue-green feathers. His dark hair was short on the side but lone enough on top to sweep to the side. The face of the black Rolex was almost four fingers across. The arrogant ass wore a pair of black ray bans, a smug expression spreading across his face upon seeing Aldrich.

"Hey, Gent." Dutch grinned and clucked his tongue when Aldrich chose to ignore the upstart.

Turning his attention to Marco, Aldrich noted no visible identifying marks, only the Marco tendency to wear black on black. Instead of making him appear thuggish, Aldrich thought Marco's wardrobe somehow helped him to disappear into the background. The bread and hair was expertly cropped close and added to the non-intimidating aura Marco wore. Where Dutch was sloppy, Marco was near perfect.

Once the door was secured, Paul didn't waste time. "William Harte has stolen twenty million dollars from me and now his middle man to the South American contacts is dead. I have people searching for William but he's proving elusive and I don't have time to wait for him to venture from hiding. I'm going to flush him out. It seems he has an estranged son living in Miami." He slid the manila folder across the desk to Aldridge. "Here is what I have on Trent Harte. I want to you to go to Florida, find him, and hold him until you hear from me. The Gentleman is in charge of the operation."

Aldridge picked up the file. This would be tricky. He paged through the minuscule information in the file. Whoever put this together didn't include Trent Hart was a public figure. Glancing up at his uncle, by the smug expression on Paul's face, he knew exactly who Trent was. He asked them to accomplish the impossible. If they did this then they would be captured or killed. He fully understood this was his reprimand for murdering his uncle's best friend. Aldridge suddenly grinned with delight. Fear briefly flickered across Paul's expression. Aldridge handed the folder to Marco on his way out of the office. Two could play a game of cat and mouse.
