25 Bookshelves Equals My Very Own Library

So I was putting together my reading list for 2013 and I kept having these moments where I looked at a cover or title and thought, "I forgot I had that. I must read it." Or "I thought I already read this. I must read."

The fact of the matter is there isn't enough time in the year for me to read everything that I want to read. Now I have be selective and prioritize and I hate it. At last count there are 25 book shelves in the house. Some I have read or re-read and others I haven't started yet. This doesn't even touch my e-book collection.

So for 2013, I signed up for the reading challenge  pledging to read 300 books this year. I am a little nervous because in 2011 I read over 500 books.  It only figures that the more I write the less time I have to read. The bookaholic in me is screaming bloody murder so I will have to find a balance--somehow.

I asked my Facebook friends for recommendations and slowly, I was able to compile a list which I will put up here for the weekend. I will also make a tab on the blog for my 2013 reading to keep track of where I'm at and what I'm going.

So watch for the list in the next day or so. It will be long with lots of info. Feel free to leave a comment with a recommendation. I know that I might not get to everything in my 2013 list or will get side tracked by shiny new releases but I will never quit reading.

Writing, writing, and writing

I had planned to assemble this month's blog posts and schedule them--but the guys suddenly started talking and they refused to take a "hold please".  So while I have a moment to get more java, I am putting this together quickly.

I have been working on I.O.N. #2, tentatively titled, Werewolf's Tale & A Druid Sword. I write with corresponding music in the background like my own personal sound track. I'm just giving a snippet and so I'll only use one of the songs I listened to for the emotional inspiration.  Enjoy!!

Jude stood up, the sheet pooling at his feet, and crossed to Levi. The werewolf could have been bolted to the floor for all he moved. Halting in front of Levi, Jude looked up into those pools of green and inhaled. The scent of fresh pine filled his senses and his eyes grew heavy lidded.
"Have you been stalking me Le—Ulric?"
"I only wanted to see you. I couldn't get you out of my mind. Your face is the first thing—the only thing I remembered since I woke up to this existence. I recall nothing else but you and I wanted to know why."
Jude boldly took a step forward, coming within inches of touching the man. "And did you find your answers?" Jude asked in a low voice.
Levi swallowed visibly, his gaze dropped to Jude's lips. "No."
Jude took the clothes from Levi's arms and dropped them on a nearby cot.
"Do you know why I see you in my dreams?" The werewolf asked quietly, almost as if he feared the answer.
"Yes," Jude replied as he took the wolf's overly large hand and led him to one of the curtained examination spaces, enclosing them within.
"Why, Jude? Why do I see you every time I close my eyes?"
"Because," Jude whispered trailing his fingertips up the massive arms, across wide shoulders, over the collarbone, palms brushed at stubbled cheeks before Jude's fingers laced into the soft brown hair. It felt just as he'd remembered it. "You see my face when you close your eyes because you belong to me—heart, mind, body, and soul. No one else will have you. You're mine, all of you, and I will not allow you to leave me again. Do you hear me? I don't give two goddamns what happened before. From this moment forward, where you go I go. Don't think I won't track you to hell and back if you disappear on me again."
The werewolf's whole body trembled under Jude's hands. He gently tugged bringing that handsome face down closer to his.
"Did you hear what I said," Jude breathed across Levi's lips.
"I belong to you," Levi panted, his green eyes searching Jude's.
"Exactly," Jude replied against Levi's lips.
A soft whine escaped Levi and Jude took full advantage and invaded Levi's mouth. It wasn't the sweet sloppy kisses of the teenager he'd once been. No, he hadn't been that boy for a long time. He was a man who had waited far too long for the love of his life to come back to him.

Sunday's WIP - Werewolf's Tail & A Druid Sword

Yesterday was Ruby Red's release day and I had five (5) copies to giveaway.  Congratulations to Jbst, Urb, listentothebreeze, midia, and anas. I hope you enjoy Beck and Diego!!

Coincidentally, I'm working on book 2 in the I.O.N, tentatively titled "Werewolf's Tail & A Druid Sword". This is about Beck's younger brother, Jude.  When their parents found out that Jude was gay, they called Beck to come and get his brother.  Diego and Beck take Jude in.  This is some insight on the heartbreak Jude has been dealing with since his move to San Diego.

This is the unedited first draft which is always crappy but I hope you enjoy it anyway.  Cheers!!

The day after graduation everything had come crashing down. Jude had arranged to spend the night with Levi. They were lying on the floor, playing Xbox, and eating chips out of the bag. Jude had noticed Levi had been quiet the whole evening. They'd been friends for long enough he'd known Levi had something on his mind.
"Ienlistedwiththemarines," Levi said it so fast that all the words ran together and it took Jude a second to decipher what had been said.
Jude's character was in the middle of an epic battle died in a chorus of explosions, but none if it had mattered. He hadn't known Levi had enlisted. The last several days he'd believed they would still be together after Levi graduated. All of his hopes had been dashed with one simple sentence.
He'd gazed at Levi with wide wounded eyes. "What do you mean you joined the marines? I thought you were staying here, going to college." Jude's stomach had cramped when he thought about not seeing Levi every day.
"My parents can't afford college and the marines will help pay for school. I signed up with the recruiter almost a month ago." Levi wouldn't meet his gaze. With a sickening feeling in his stomach, he knew Levi hadn't finished. "Besides Jude, you're only sixteen and I will be nineteen soon. Your parents will skin me alive and probably try to have me arrested if they found out about us. I can put my four years in with the marines, you'll be twenty, then we can do whatever we want."
"I can't believe you didn't tell me. Why didn't you say anything? A month? Seriously? What the hell! What does my age have to do with anything?" Jude tried to listen but he was so upset his stomach churned. The perfect world he'd constructed fell down around him. He didn't want Levi to go away. He knew it was self of him. Levi was being responsible. He was always the responsible one, and at that moment, Jude had despised it.
Levi finally glanced at Jude, his eyes were red rimmed and filled with sorrow. The expression on his face was one of barely controlled agony. "Do you think I did this is for me? I have loved you since…"
Levi choked back tears and scrubbed at his eyes. Jude threw himself at his best friend, straddled Levi's lap, face buried in Levi's neck. They clutched each other, holding on tight as they sobbed.
"I want—need—to be more for you. I want it all, a relationship, a house, sharing our lives. I want to be someone you'll be proud of. If I do this then we'll have a good start."
Jude had snuffled into Levi's shoulder. "Did you mean it?" Drudging up his courage, Jude sat up and gazed at Levi, taking in his straight nose and the curve of his lips. "Did you mean what you said?"
Taking Jude's face between his palms, Levi leaned in and brushed a soft kiss over Jude's plump lips. "Yes, I love you," Levi breathed. "For so very long. I don't know that I could ever stop."
That night they had made out until their lips were stinging and raw. Jude had been afraid of the dawn and held tight to Levi. He whispered some of the sappiest things but it had felt right as he had lain in Levi's strong arms. He had run his fingers through his friend's dark brown hair, memorizing the silky texture, and gazed soulfully into those huge green eyes surrounded by long sooty lashes. It was sappy and sweet and everything he had needed at the time.
In the morning, Levi had kissed him one final time before they left the bedroom. At the station, Levi boarded the bus that would take him to basic training. Before climbing the steps, he slipped an envelope into Jude's hand. Jude had sworn he wouldn't cry. So he smiled, and yelled, and waved like a lunatic until the bus turned the corner. Spinning on his heal he had run to the first secluded spot he could find and read the letter with shaking hands.
No matter what happens, I will always come for you. Love, Levi
All of the talk about his parents, how he felt about Beck and Diego, and his feelings for Levi had left him emotionally exhausted. Jude thought he might be able deal with Levi moving on as long as he knew Levi was safe and sound. Alive. Sometimes it felt like Levi had died and Jude struggled with the sorrow that swamped him at those odd, sudden thoughts. The not knowing was worse because his mind was constantly supplying horrific scenarios. Jude knew that he needed to break this cycle or he would lose himself to depression. No, that wasn't right, he was already losing himself to that dark downward spiral. To pull out, he would have to resolve to move on.
Sighing heavily at his morose thoughts, he reread the note one more time before carefully folding it backup. To start over he'd have to put Levi in the past. He opened the nightstand drawer to drop the note in but he couldn't ignore how wrong it felt. Closing the drawer he placed the slip of paper carefully back into this wallet. Flipping off the light, he crawled under the covers. He hadn't known that the thought of starting over would hurt so much.
"I should have told him that I only ever wanted him to love me," Jude sighed into the shadows.

Escaping the shadows of tragic loss, Diego builds a new life with his best friend Beck. The appearance of a mysterious package changes his world and threatens his newfound love, making him wonder if he's escaped anything at all.

Diego Hernandez had long been in love with Beck Zell. Deciding it was now or never, he confronted his best friend, and they spend a perfect night discovering new and kinky things about each other. But the next morning, things start going downhill fast when a suspicious package arrives on the doorstep for Beck. Accosted by thugs, they barely escape. Memories of a dead brother and an untouchable drug lord spur Diego to believe his lover was mixed up in a dangerous underworld. Diego would do anything to save Beck, even if it's at the business end of a Louisville Slugger. Little did he know he was jumping feet first into the paranormal world policed by ION.

Excerpt:

CHAPTER ONE

"Diego Hernandez, did you hear a word I said?" The sultry voice of his best friend, Denise Everson, cut into his nervous thoughts.
"Yes… no… yes." He wiped his sweaty palms on his jeans. "The decorations are up. Dinner for the Feast of Epiphany is in the refrigerator. All I have to do tomorrow is pop it into the oven."
"What's wrong? Is your madre that upset you're not going home for Three Kings Day?" Denise had known him since kindergarten and she was able to read him like a book.
"I'm going to tell Beck I love him." He couldn't believe he blurted it out like that. He glanced at the clock, mentally counting down the time until his roommate would be home from his business trip.
"It's about time. You've been in love with him since I introduced you at that Parkour event your senior year of college. Why now?"
Diego breathed out forcefully. His hand automatically searched for the turquoise rock in his pocket. He always carried his abuela's gift and rubbed it like a worry stone whenever he thought of Beck. "He's traveling more for Jacobs, Brenner, and Rogue. The last six months he's been quiet and tense when we're alone together. I can't watch him bring dates home anymore. It hurts, Dee, to see him touch someone else, to listen to him have sex. I can move out, distance myself, or tell him how I feel. I can't lose him and, as it is now, I'm losing him every day."
"You already know how I feel. Why are you on the phone with me instead of getting ready? Hang up and call me later with details; I want lots of details." Her bright laughter sounded in his ear before she disconnected.
Diego was a jumble of nerves as he checked his hair in the mirror. He showered—twice. He shaved in all the extra places more than once. He put on his favorite pair of fuck-me jeans and chose a black, silk button-up shirt. His fingers danced along the buttons as he tried to decide if he should fasten the shirt all the way up or leave the top three undone.
The rattle of keys at the door caused his heart to leap and his stomach to plummet as he hurried over to the 'staging area'. His heart pounded hard and, for several seconds, it was the only sound he heard. His roommate, Beck Zell, walked through the door and set his briefcase on the floor before taking off his coat. The man looked damned fine in the expensive business attire. The sight of slender, athletic shoulders stretching the fabric of the shirt as he removed his suit jacket had Diego hard and wanting.
Beck stopped unbuttoning his cuffs when he noticed Diego leaning against the doorframe to the kitchen. Diego knew the thick line of his erection was defined by his skintight jeans. Diego saw Beck's bright turquoise eyes widen as they slowly traveled over his body, stopping at the exposed skin of Diego's abdomen. He had used only the three buttons in the middle, revealing both his smooth, dark chest and the work-hardened abs. Beck's now-hungry eyes coasted lazily down Diego's body, halting at his groin. His roommate's gaze seemed to turn steamy as Beck licked his lips. At least, that was how it appeared from where Diego stood.
That one look emboldened Diego. He swallowed his nervous apprehension, pushed off the doorframe, and sauntered toward Beck. He had years of stored-up fantasies about their first kiss. How he would feel, what Beck would look like—taste like. As he took Beck's golden—flushed face between his rough hands, he realized all of the imagination in the world didn't come close to the real thing.

Panic! Tomorrow is Release Day!

*running around in circles waving hands in the air*

Tomorrow is the release day for Ruby Red and I feel like I should be doing something.  I'm having a hard time concentrating and I think have scribbled 2 paragraphs in the last 5 hours.

I'm officially useless!

You know what happens when I get this way?  I bake. I did not know this fact about myself until I became published. Tomorrow I will have baked enough cookies to supply the elementary school with treats. Although I am craving chocolate cookies right now, I really shouldn't eat any unless I want to spend 10 hours on the treadmill to burn it off.  I'm allergic to the treadmill, just so you know.

This is the last day that I will have a parkour video.  This one is my favorite just because he is dressed like the hero is Assassin's Creed.  Awesomeness.

Important: I am giving away a couple of copies of Ruby Red on January 5th so make sure you drop tomorrow by and enter if you want a chance at a copy.

Cheers!

The Making of Ruby Red.

The World's Best Parkour and Freerunning 2012

When I started Ruby Red it was for a holiday submission. I had been playing around with a little short story I had titled Roadside (Leavings Notes #1). Diego was stranded in the early morning hours on the highway because he'd run out of gas.  There was a misunderstanding with Beck disappearing for a week the night they first had sex. There were so many problems with it. Why Beck didn't contact Diego (besides leaving a note that was lost) was hard to explain with all the technology of today.  The second part was Jude, Becks brother, flaunted his naked butt at Diego when Beck does come back home. Diego doesn't know who Jude is and takes off in a fit of temper...

...and I hated it.

Diego was supposed to be this great guy but he was such a drama queen stomping off like a teenage girl. That's okay in a certain context but he didn't even ask any questions, confirm what was going on. I wanted to strangle the both of them.

For three weeks I was bent over this story attempting to make it better and my heart wasn't into it. I couldn't get past 7k. I disliked it more with every read through. Them my husband said, "Does it have to be a contemporary? Why don't you change the genre?"

I stripped the characters and their backgrounds out of the story and started anew. In one day I wrote 15k.  I was ecstatic  On a break, I made some coffee, and gave a rundown of the plot. As I spoke it dawned on me that the story was a little dark for a holiday story. Originally it took place Christmas Eve/Christmas Day with a tree, dinner with the family, and even a "Merry Fucking Christmas to me." But there was also best friends to lovers, a mysterious package, roofing hopping, alley dodging, a Louisville Slugger, some Kung Fu fighting, gang bangers, and... well you get it. It wasn't an ideal Holiday story.

The story finished up at just under 23k. I submitted it knowing it wouldn't fit the bill for December but hoped the publisher could fit me in January--if they accepted it. Silver did like it and suggested I change the holidays and we chose Three Kings Day on January 5th. (How Cool Is It That Ruby Red Releases on January 5th!!) I had to rewrite some scenes and lost my, "Merry Fucking Christmas to me." which I shamelessly lamented for days.

That, boys and girls, was how Ruby Red came into fruition.  Both Beck and Diego are still flawed but in different ways.  What I loved was they could love each other through the flaws and mistakes.  I thought Diego's family rocked, too, but that is just me--I'm sort of biased.

A quick note before I leave, make sure you stop by on Saturday the 5th for a giveaway.  I wouldn't want you to miss it.  Cheers!

A New Beginning is a short story from the Magi Gregori Borchetta's perspective.  This takes pace right after the final battle in Sumeria's Sons when they are counting the wounded and dead. Gregori  and the warrior, Juan Ybarra, have been dancing around each other since that fateful day when Juan gave his blood oath to Tristan Janick. Dangerous ghosts haunt Gregori and he's not sure if he should stay with Tristan's Tribe or go for the safety of those he cares for. Will the skittish Magi be enticed to not only to stay for Tristan and the tribe but for Juan as well?

I hope you enjoy this small story.  There will be more to come of Gregori and Juan so watch for more free offerings in the future!

The Escape Master

What did I say I was doing today??  Ummmm, yeah.  I didn't do anything but write on book two of the ION series.  Yes, that was good but I was supposed to have this Zen conversation on the blog today. When I realized that I was running out of time, I ran around waving my hands in the air in an unsupervised panic. With good intentions, I sat down to dig up my saved research and was sidetracked a second time--by videos.

I am such a true sucker for action flicks. This is David Belle escaping some thugs in the movie 2005 D13.

Obviously, I'm all about the action and not the balancing philosophy of finding a way over your obstacle.  Essentially, that is what Parkour is about for some, finding a way through adversity. Not only finding a way through but doing it in such a way that calls the beauty of the movement. You do not punch through but glide over. (There that wasn't so hard was it? Go away evil twin.) How long has mankind been free running? It's not new the terrain just changed from forest and wilderness to urban areas.

Did you know my free short story is coming out tomorrow in the 2013 January Silver Shorts Anthology? It is my first Silver Short submission and definitely not my last.

Five Days Until the Release of Ruby Red

When I sat down and created the world of ION, I wanted an equalizer for humans—without making them into superheroes. Being the gamer that I am, lamented how it wasn't possible for people to do what the MC of video game, Assassin's Creed, could. My brilliant husband proved my wrong and sat me down in front of my first Parkour video.

Parkour, also known as free running, is practiced in urban areas. It is part martial art and part philosophy. It is amazing to watch the discipline, dedication, confidence and the fearlessness of these athletes. I would probably pee myself at some of the heights involved.

What I loved the most was you didn't have to be super human to practice it and exactly what I was looking for.

I've attached a 'how to' video which was really good at breaking down the steps and making the sport look more feasible to the average Joe. Tomorrow I will go into the origin of Parkour. How far back does the practice go??

What's going on this week?

I have two releases coming up this week.  One is a free read, New Beginnings, in the Silver Shorts on January 2nd and then Ruby Red will be released on the 5th. So starting on Monday, I will talk about Free Running and why I used it in the ION Series.

BUT today I wanted to share my favorite reads for 2013 since it is the end of the year.

This year has been and eventful year for me. As an avid reader, I read hundreds of books a year. This year I will top out around 370 books which is down from last years 531. I'm very much a mood reader and lean towards favoring fantasy/paranormal/sci-fi, however; I do read most everything.  I'm also a re-reader so some of these I have read twice, and one or two has suffered through a third read through.
