Extra! Extra! Who Has A Story Prompt?

I was looking through Amazon's recommendations for me, which is diverse because I read everything. Anyway, on my lists are a lot of books with "Alien" in the title. Is this a thing? To waste a part of the plot or blurb on the title? I'm guessing its a search thing which is sad. If so many are using titles like that then there needs to be a category. For me, if there is a giveaway in the title, I automatically skip it. Seriously, nothing about those titles are enticing to me.

I also saw weird shifter titles that were out of the the norm shifters. Yeti (yes, you read that correctly) and crocodiles kept popping up, not that there are a ton just the same two books everywhere. Amazon doesn't make it easy to find or browse their categories. It's like they are pushing their algorithm buy lists and I hate that as a reader. Please Amazon, make you're list easily accessible so that if I want to find gay science fiction or lesbian fantasy I don't have to do a cavity search. If I have to know the title of the book in order to find it quickly, then that is a fail on the retailers part and why I would go to All Romance first.

Once I found the best seller list, it didn't help me one whit because low and behold there was all their recommendations. Business wise, I understand that. As a reader, it wasn't what I wanted. I don't read much contemporary and I wade through those to find my sci-fi/fantasy gems. Here's another thing I find hard to believe. That out of 30+k books of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender combined category, that there was under 4k in the science fiction/fantasy sub category.

After all of that searching I was no longer interested in reading anything.

When I get frustrated enough, I end up putting together a world and storyline for what I would like to read and to later write myself. Now, if I only had the time to turn all those ideas into books. I would be a happy girl.

It was situation like this were I just wanted something to read in the little time that I had, only to spend that precious time looking for a book. Then, some how through my inner dialogue, my grumblings lead me to contemplate the idea of writing a blog story--again. (I know, one doesn't easily connect to the other but roll with it.)

My mind was like, "Hey, how hard can it be to write 300-500 words a week?" *insert loads of sarcasm* This after the most nerve wracking summer that I've had so far in my writing career. But there is a part of me that still thinks this is an excellent idea.

Then I wondered what could I write as a blog story? I have all these ideas that are already connected to stories I planned to write soon.

So I need virgin ideas.

That is where you come in. Who has a story prompt? It needs to be Sci-Fi, Fantasy, or Paranormal. As much as I would like to write contemporary, it isn't the genre for me. I don't write dub con, slave fic, or anything similar because I'm tempted to murder the MC.

So there are my limits. What are your ideas?

The Homecoming by J Scott Coatsworth

Being a published author has been my lifelong dream.  Or at least one of them - the other one was to be an astronomer… but there was waaaay too much math. Oh, and there was the whole rock star thing, but I found out that I didn't have the voice for it.

I got the writing bug early. My Mom put a copy of the Lord of the Rings into my hands when I was in second grade. Within six months, I finished the trilogy, and I had decided that it's what I wanted to do.

About the same time, Star Wars came out. I was maybe nine years old, and I begged every relative I could get a hold of to take me to see it.  I saw it seven times in the theater. And I was so jealous when my cousin got the Millennium Falcon  for Christmas, and I only got an x-wing fighter.

I started out by writing a short story. I won a contest to have my sci fi story placed in the University of Arizona library (illustrated in crayon and everything). Soon I began drawing maps of new worlds…. Pages and pages taped together with scotch tape.

By high school, I was writing a novel on an old manual typewriter – this was the early eighties, after all.  I took the first page to my Junior year English teacher, and asked her to read it. I sat back, expecting her to rave about it.

She handed it back to me, smiled, and said "it's a good start."

I completed my first novel when I was about 28, and sent it out to ten mainstream publishers. It took a year, but every one of them eventually rejected it. So I gave up.

I tried to get going again a few times, but it never took. One day two years ago, I was complaining to my husband, Mark, that yet another thing had derailed my writing.  He looked at me and said "The only thing that's stopping you from writing is you."

It lit a spark under me.  I got back to it for the fifth or sixth time. But this time I did a little every day, I started with some stories I'd written before, freshening them up and sending them out. Then I responded to some anthology calls from Dreamspinner. The first couple were no-goes. But then I wrote one especially for a "bear" anthology called A Taste of Honey – and BG Thomas and Anne Regan plucked me from obscurity.

Now a year later, I have not one but two stand-alone novellas coming out – "Between the Lines", a modern day romantic magical realism piece set in the political world of Sacramento, California, and "The Homecoming", my wolfman-spaceman piece which is partially set in one of those worlds I created in maps so many years ago.

My dream has become a reality. And I can't wait to write the next chapter. :)

Title: The Homecoming

Author: J. Scott Coatsworth

Publisher: Less Than Three Press
Cover Artist: London Burden

Length: 20,000 words

Release Date: July 29, 2015

Blurb: When his own world is destroyed, Aldiss and his crew barely manage to escape, leaving friends and lovers behind. What was meant to be an exploratory trip back to the home world turns into a mad dash for survival.

When they awaken from stasis on Earth, which was abandoned by humanity five centuries before, they must quickly learn about their new home. While exploring the region around the ship, Aldiss meets Hari, a shape-changer, whose people harbor secrets that might cost the crew their lives.

Hari reached the edge of the woods just in time to see Neru crouching to leap at the two-legs. Young fool.

He gathered himself and jumped after Neru, knocking him aside as his teeth reached for the two-legs' throat.

Neru turned and snarled at him, backing away toward the woods.

Hari stood firm, ears back, hackles raised, and drew the corners of his mouth back to reveal his teeth. Back off, Neru.

The whelp shook his head and grinned with the brashness of youth, until Hari leaped at him and nipped his ear. With a surprised yelp, Neru turned his head, deferring to Hari's strength. As you say, brother. There was a cockiness to Neru's look that unsettled him.

The other wolf backed up slowly then turned to disappear into the woods.
Hari caught a glimpse of Mavi watching from the shadows. The old wolf snarled, and slunk off after her son.

What do you seek, old mother? Hari wondered, watching Mavi's silver-tipped tail flicker into the darkness. It was clear where Neru's courage and cunning had come from.

Hari turned back toward the two-legs. He was holding a strange stick, not unlike the one that Hari's grandmother had shown him in the wolf dream.

But it was his face that caught Hari's eye. He knew that face. The two-legs' eyes were white-gray, and his jet-black hair was swept to the side.

Despite the danger, he shifted in the manner only a few of the clan are able to do in the cold. He grew quickly taller and less hairy but no less muscled, and stood naked before the two-legs.

They stared at each other for a long moment. Hari felt an immense attraction washing over him. He saw in his summer form that this two-legs was beautiful. His own body responded to this… man… in an unexpected way, seeing and feeling things his winter form could not. Hari leaned forward and sniffed the stranger, drinking in his musk. It smelled enticing. Strangely familiar.

He sensed the two-legs stiffen, and to reassure, him, Hari licked the man's neck.

The two-legs was trembling now like a young whelp, so he tried something else. He took the stranger's face in his hands and kissed him.

The shaking slowed, and then the man was kissing him back. Hari was hungry for him, like a starving wolf at the end of a long, hard winter.

It is not the time for this, the keh whispered in his ear.

He broke contact and turned away, ashamed that he was betraying his Clan, and for lust. An emotion of his summer form.

"I'm sorry," he said to the two-legs, without looking back. "It won't happen again." Even he was not sure if he meant Neru's attack, or the kiss.

He shifted back into his winter form and loped off into the woods after his pack mates.

Scott has been writing since elementary school, when he and won a University of Arizona writing contest in 4th grade for his first sci-fi story (with illustrations!). He finished his first novel in his mid-twenties, but after seeing it rejected by ten publishers, he gave up on writing for a while.

Over the ensuing years, he came back to it periodically, but it never stuck. Then one day, he was complaining to Mark, his husband, early last year about how he had been derailed yet again by the death of a family member, and Mark said to him “the only one stopping you from writing is you.

Since then, Scott has gone back to writing in a big way, finishing more than a dozen short stories – some new, some that he had started years before – and seeing his first sale. He’s embarking on a new trilogy, and also runs the Queer Sci Fi (http://www.queerscifi.com) site, a support group for writers of gay sci fi, fantasy, and supernatural fiction.

Can you believe that I'm already planning the next blog tour for Dragon's Eye? It's tentatively scheduled for release on October 7th. I have some great plans for giveaways and there will be some special deals but I'm not spilling the beans--just yet.

Meanwhile, this Week:

J. Scott Coatsworth will be a guest on the blog in a couple of hours so make sure you stop by and take a look at his new release, a paranormal shifter sci-fi story.

On Wednesday, August 19th at 5:00 p.m. eastern time I'll be participating in Anastasia Vitsky's Taliaschild Release Day Party! (And Spoonmas!). Please join us. There is a great group of authors involved.

On Thursday, August 20th I'll post some Sumeria's Sons ficlits that I wrote of a couple of blogs. So some of you may have already read them already.

I'm also thinking (again) about writing a blog story. I'm not sure that I have time to do it but how hard is 300-500 words a week? I don't know. But I might give it a try.

Following that vein of thought, I'm thinking about writing a blog post asking for writing prompts. So give it some thought. What would you like to see me write? Do you have characters in mind? A scenario? Think about it and get back with me on Friday, August 21st. I'll post an inquiry here on the blog and collect story prompts for 5-7 days and I will choose one.

Thank you for stopping by and reading!!

Revella Hawthorne's New Release: The King's Command w/Giveaway

Welcome to Revella Hawthorne to the blog for her new release on August 15th for The King's Command, the second installment to her Bred for Love series.

Title: The King’s Command
Series: Bred For Love #2
Author: Revella Hawthorne
Release date: August 15th 2015

Blurb: Percy is pregnant. He is overjoyed, and Prince Edward, his master and owner, is just as happy. Both men are content, and are enjoying the simple life at Hartgrove, Prince Edward's country estate. There they stay in pre-baby bliss, until the christening of the Cassian Dynasty's newest princeling approaches. Prince Edward decides to risk King Henry's wrath, and brings Percy back to the capital to attend his nephew's christening, putting his and Percy's unconventional relationship front and center in the media and the court. Greed and betrayal combine to place Percy and their unborn child in danger, and the capital, once a place of power and strength for Prince Edward, becomes a prison. Percy is confronted by the reality of his social status and what exactly it means to be the collared consort of a Cassian blood prince--and how dangerous that place of honor can be.

Caught between the orders of King Henry and the dangers to be found in Court and city, Percy and Edward strive to protect themselves, their love, and their unborn child.

The King’s Command Excerpt

He pulled the sheet up to Percy’s chin, and smoothed it down over his chest and stomach. He rested his hand on Percy’s abdomen, amazed as he always was when he thought about it, that his child grew inside his mate. A child, his and Percy’s.

Percy was a breeder, and Edward mourned for a brief second that his mate’s ice-blue eyes or sweet smile would never be gifted to a child of theirs, his consort’s DNA only minimally transferrable to any offspring he may have. The vision of a little girl, with Edward’s dark hair and Percy’s bright eyes flashed for a moment in his mind, but he pushed it away. Percy would gift their child only enough DNA to be viable and grow, and his smile or entrancing eyes would never be handed down to a new generation.

Yet it was enough that there would be children; Percy had a tender heart, and a need to love. Edward wanted sons and daughters, the more, the merrier, and he knew Percy would want and love each child with everything in his small frame. This first child of theirs would not be the last. Hartgrove Court was a huge estate, a working farm and manor, and large enough to support a big family and plenty of staff. It had been gifted to Edward through his late mother’s dowry upon her death, property given to all her children not in the direct line of succession. Edward was thankful his mother knew him well, since the manor and farm went to him and not his more urban-centered siblings. Edward felt a pang of grief, faint now after all these years that his mother, the late Queen of Cassia, would never know her future grandchildren.

Edward made himself leave Percy’s side, the doctor’s words to him about how Percy’s pregnancy may come with complications worrying him. Since Percy was a first-generation design, crafted by the late Master Cartwright of Heritage Breeders, there was no blueprint of sorts in place for how Percy would handle pregnancy. Cartwright had made Percy for himself, though Edward was selfishly glad that Cartwright died before Percy was mature enough for breeding. Percy was his now, forever, and the only touch he would know would be Edward’s.

Title: The Prince's Consort
Series: Bred For Love #1
Author: Revella Hawthorne
Release date:April 21, 2015

Blurb: In a world where humans are genetically designed, altered and sold for sexual pleasure and breeding, a young prince of the powerful Cassian Dynasty decides to take a mate and sire heirs. Not wishing to saddle himself with royal and meddlesome in-laws, and a wife he would have no desire to bed, Prince Edward goes to Heritage Breeders, and finds far more than just a warm body to sate his lust and carry on his lineage.

Percy is the result of a master DNA architect designing himself his own personal sex slave and breeder. Yet when his creator and Master dies, leaving Percy alone at the mercy of the callous stable masters and the new owner of Heritage, he fears his future. Afraid he'll be bought by a wretched old man or a deviant monster, Percy is terrified when he is dragged from his cell and presented to the most prestigious client Heritage has ever welcomed...a Cassian Royal.

Torn between desire, duty, a king's command and the innermost desires of their hearts, Edward and Percy are set on path that is anything but easy. Can Percy trust Edward with his heart as he does his body? Can Edward keep an angry king and unseen enemies away from the young slave who is steadily stealing his heart?

The Prince’s Consort Excerpt

“I would prefer a male, smaller than me, handsome, with a degree of intelligence and personality. I’m not interested in having sex with someone who’s no more than an attractive machine that bends over on command, so please take intelligence into account. Although, I do prefer some obedience, as I will be breeding my prospective mate often, so having to seduce or force holds little appeal. I have no need for my mate to have fertile sperm, as I will not be the one carrying the offspring, of course. And I don’t feel like explaining to my staff why my breeder is mounting the maids when I’m not around.”

Edward listed off his requirements, watching as Mr. Wimble slowly stopped typing, and began to stare at him in some consternation. Edward wasn’t going to apologize for that last statement, either. He’d seen the results of an unruly and fully fertile male breeder decimate the staff at one of the estates neighboring his out in the country, knocking up several of the maids and female upper staff that had contact with him. His neighbors eventually had him removed after it was discovered what was going on, and Edward never found out exactly what was done to the breeder, but he could guess he wasn’t at some farm working the fields. Castration and slavery, or death. That type of breeder was one of the very rare, non-child-bearing male breeders, called ‘sires’, who were hyped up with testosterone and temperamental, usually used by the breeding houses to continue the in-house stock lines. Edward wondered at the time how the breeder ended up out in the country at a noble’s family estate, but the current Court was full of fools, so he really shouldn’t be surprised.

He had strict needs he wanted met. Any potential mate would be the parent of his future children, so slacking on the finer details wasn’t an option. Not for a royal, and not for him.

“I have several candidates that may fit your needs, Your Highness. Are you interested in viewing today? I can have them pulled from the stables within the next hour for your inspection if you care to wait. Shall I summon a maid for luncheon?”

Did Someone Request a Sumerian Pantheon?

I was reading reviews for Surrounding by Crimson and there were a few that wondered if there was somewhere they could find the Sumerian Pantheon. Who were good gods to rally behind and bad gods to hiss and boo at? There is a glossary in the back of the books but it doesn't draw those lines to keep from giving away spoilers to new readers of Sumeria's Sons.

For the blog tour for Dragon's Eye, I will be writing a series of guest posts that will help with the genealogy of the gods. I'll explain the Igigi War, who is the Simurgh, give the lore behind Mithra and his protector, Verethragna, and so many other things that will hopefully be helpful.

A couple of things to keep in mind, 1) I'm not a historian so the guest posts will be prefaced with a warning that I'm talking in generalities. 2) When the material was vague, I took liberties with the mythos--which shouldn't come as a surprise since the series was about children born to Enkidu and Gilgamesh. ^_^

Wish me luck because there are a lot of guest posts to write!

Reading is My Drug of Choice: Sharing the Pain/Love of Book Browsing

Why do I keep collecting titles that look interesting when I still have a ton of books on my ereader that I haven't even cracked open? I can't help myself, I see a book cover or hear chatter over a story and I have to look. Then I begin to want.

Honestly, looking through books is a type of therapy for me. It's a weird kind of decompression that allows me to relax. Weird, right? If you follow me, you might already know that I read everything. All romantic pairings: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transsexual, all assortment of Menage (MFM, MMF, MFF, MMM, FFF, and more), mainstream romance, and non-romantic Urban Fantasy and Sci-Fi. So what have I found lately? I'm so glad you asked! (LOL). Please, share my pain with me.

Oh! And do you have any reading suggestions?? ^_^

Genre: Fantasy, Young Adult,

Blurb: The first kidnappings happened two hundred years before. Some years it was two boys taken, some years two girls, sometimes one of each. But if at first the choices seemed random, soon the pattern became clear. One was always beautiful and good, the child every parent wanted as their own. The other was homely and odd, an outcast from birth. An opposing pair, plucked from youth and spirited away.

This year, best friends Sophie and Agatha are about to discover where all the lost children go: the fabled School for Good & Evil, where ordinary boys and girls are trained to be fairy tale heroes and villains. As the most beautiful girl in Gavaldon, Sophie has dreamed of being kidnapped into an enchanted world her whole life. With her pink dresses, glass slippers, and devotion to good deeds, she knows she’ll earn top marks at the School for Good and graduate a storybook princess. Meanwhile Agatha, with her shapeless black frocks, wicked pet cat, and dislike of nearly everyone, seems a natural fit for the School for Evil.

But when the two girls are swept into the Endless Woods, they find their fortunes reversed—Sophie’s dumped in the School for Evil to take Uglification, Death Curses, and Henchmen Training, while Agatha finds herself in the School For Good, thrust amongst handsome princes and fair maidens for classes in Princess Etiquette and Animal Communication.. But what if the mistake is actually the first clue to discovering who Sophie and Agatha really are…?
