~Excerpt~

Prologue

Four Years Ago

“Beau, get your lazy ass out of bed. I have the afternoon off.” Jack Romano went to the fridge and grabbed a beer and with a smile in his voice he continued, “Unless, of course, that’s where you’d like us to spend our afternoon… Beau? Where are you? Beau?”

Jack walked back to the bedroom of his and Beau’s apartment following the sound of voices. Figuring it was one of the soccer team, Jack walked through the door and glanced around looking for his man. He found him. Beau was fucking Meredith Simmons in their bed.

“I’m sorry that you had to find out like this, Jack. I’ve been trying to tell you, but…” Beau got out of bed and started to dress.

“Tell me what? What is this?” Jack’s voice broke. “This is a mistake. You’re gay. We’ve been together since high school.”

“Meredith, get dressed. We’ll be in the living room. Finish your beer, Jack.”

“No, I don’t want to fucking finish my beer. I want to know what’s going on.”

“It’s pretty straight forward, I’m in love with Meredith and I’m going to marry her.”

“Honey, I’m leaving so you can get this mess straightened out. Don’t let him corrupt you again.”

Meredith let herself out, the door closing quietly behind her.

“How long?” Jack asked needing to know.

“Six months, maybe more.”

“But we made love yesterday.”

“We fucked yesterday. Let’s get down to business. Meredith and I would like this apartment so we’d appreciate it if you found somewhere else to live.”

“No fucking way…it’s my name on the lease, and you’re the one who’s leaving.”

“You’ll be sorry you’re doing this. I was planning on seeing you on the side once Meredith and I are married. You know I love you but I can’t get ahead at work being a fag, I need a wife.”

“No, you’re wrong. Gays are accepted everywhere. Please, we can work this out.”

“We can’t. I won’t put my future in jeopardy.”

“You’re gay. You aren’t going to change that.”

“Actually, I’m bi.” Beau came up to put his arms around Jack. “You love me. We’ll talk about all of this when I get back.”

Jack broke Beau’s hold and with tears streaming down his cheeks said, “Get the hell out of my apartment. You can move out tomorrow. I’ll sort out your things tonight.”
“You can’t do that.”

“As I said, my name is on the lease. Get the fuck out. You’re leaving me.”

“Jack, be reasonable, we can be together when I come home from the honeymoon. We’ll have to sneak around but—”

“Do you really think I’m capable of that? Helping you cheat? No, just no.”

“You’ll change your mind when I come home. I’ll be back.”

“Get the fuck out, get out of here, right now.” Jack’s voice broke again.

Beau slammed the door on his way out. Jack sat down on the sofa that he and Beau picked out for the living room seven months ago, put his head in his hands and wept.

“Beau, Beau, how can I live without you? But I can’t be with you as long as you’re with her.”

Bobby and Keith’s House
Thursday in June, Four Years Later
Eight in the Morning

Jack was distraught when he came back to Bobby’s. Carlo was with him. “They’re not doing anything to you because you shot Billy are they?” Reggie asked obviously worried. Reggie and Mark were staying with Bobby because of the fire.
“No, but any officer-involved shooting requires a hearing. The captain already called it a good shoot. The rest of the procedure is all technicalities…” Jack still had storm clouds over his face. He and Carlo sat down at the kitchen table and Marla poured them some coffee. Jack appeared dumbstruck.

He finally blurted out, “Meredith died in childbirth three days ago.” Jack’s voice broke. “She had a little girl. Beau killed himself yesterday and left custody of the infant to me in a new will he made after Meredith died. They tried to contact me yesterday, but I was busy with the Billy business. I have to go sign paperwork at Social Services if I accept custody. No one has been there for the baby for three days.
Carlo’s going with me to identify Beau at the morgue.”

“Why do you have to identify him?” Bobby was incensed.

“There isn’t anyone else.” Jack’s shoulders shook.

“I have to go see her at the hospital if I accept custody. There is no family. If I don’t take her, she’ll go into the foster system. I have to make up my mind right away.”

“What?” Bobby screeched in anger.

“You heard me. Carlo came to my apartment when he heard about the shooting. He’s going to help me with the legal mess. I’ll take that security job with you, Keith, if the offer is still open. Now that I’m going to have a child, I need steady work that doesn’t require me to place my life on the line.”

“Of course the offer is still open.” Bobby put his arm around Jack. “Are you okay?”

“I haven’t had time to think about it. They’re holding a note for me from Beau at his lawyer’s office.”

“Do you need any baby things? I have Kitty’s things, although they’re not the best quality,” Jason offered.

“I have to get some stuff from their apartment. Meredith probably bought things for the baby. I’ll need to purchase a house. My apartment has only one bedroom.” Jack’s face scrunched up in worry.
“Do you need money?” Reggie asked.

“I don’t know Reg. I promise I’ll let you know.”

“The two bedroom across the street from us is for sale. It’s small, but there is plenty of property if you want to expand later,” Jason said. “Stella is going into Assisted Living.”

“I might be interested. Carlo needs to look at Beau’s finances. I’m going to visit her at the hospital now. They’re keeping her for a while, she’s underweight.”

“How much underweight?” Bobby asked.
“She weighs only three pounds even though she was full term. Although she’s finally breathing on her own and just started sucking the bottle, they told me she can’t go home yet. Meredith wasn’t eating much. She wanted to keep her figure,” Jack said, the disgust plain on his face.
Bobby’s jaw dropped. “What a bitch.”

“Carlo’s coming with me. The Billy mess is cleaned up, now I have one of my own.”

Bobby reached out and touched Jack’s arm. “You don’t have to take her. An infant girl is greatly prized on the adoption market. She’d get a home quickly.”

“I have to keep her. She’s all I have left of Beau. I’ve got to go,” Jack choked on a sob. He left with Carlo and the door closed behind them.

“Goddamn Beau, he’s sabotaging Jack’s relationships from the grave,” Jason cursed.

“It’s clear that he’s not going to change his mind about keeping her. Carlo was doing more than a flyby here. I wonder how he feels about this.” Keith poured more coffee.

“Not you, baby, you’re on medication, remember, Greg said limit your caffeine,” Reggie told Mark.

“Have juice with Bobby. He’s on meds too.”

“We’ll all have to help him do this. The little girl is an innocent, she can’t help that her father was a lying, cheating, son of a bitch,” Bobby said eyes moving from Jason to Reggie.

“It isn’t like we haven’t taken care of little girls before, we have Kitty-cat. As far as Carlo is concerned, he was interested. We’ll find out how invested he is now. Let’s see how this all plays out.” Reggie moved to the sofa and sat down in a huff.

Bobby lifted his juice. “A toast to Billy’s fortunate demise. As for Beau, may he rest in peace, if that’s possible for a liar and a cheat whose only good deed was offing himself?”

“Here, here…” They men clinked their coffee cups and glasses.

“We’ll know more about what Jack wants to do once he and Carlo take care of the legalities,” Keith observed.

“I don’t know about you, but to me it looked like Carlo was all in,” Zach noted.
Jason’s face was rife with speculation. “I believe you’re right.”

BLURB

Summoned from the past, Konu rises naked from the sea to reclaim his power for the freedom to live—and love. If the forces of evil don’t get to him first!

On a hot day in Waikiki, beachgoers are stunned when a tall, handsome man rises from the ocean. Striding naked to a small, ringed enclosure containing four huge stones most tourists never even notice, he becomes visibly upset. These are Wizard Stones, positioned between the beach and the foot traffic on Kalakaua Avenue. Konu, the naked man, is agitated by a young Asian girl draping her beach towel over the stones. He's come a long way, from Tahiti, and is one of the ancient wizards whose power was infused into these sacred stones four hundred years ago.

With the invisible battle between good and evil raging, Konu has been dispatched to help balance the power. Landing in modern-day Waikiki, he's stunned by the changes – and to find he is alone. A cop tries to arrest him for indecent exposure but the young girl's grandfather – who thinks Konu's a homeless lunatic offers him refuge. Will the ancient forces of evil beat this wizard in Waikiki? Or can Konu find his power again, and perhaps…even love?

Book Blast for Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger #giveaway

Book Blast
Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger

I was so caught up with my writing projects that the release of Ruby Red sneaked up on me. Last year there were so many blog tours that I think I was a little burnt out by the end of 2015. Since, my planning for this year has been terrible, I thought I would try something different. A book blast.

Let me tell you a little bit about Ruby Red. You know how I can get about world building. Sometimes there is a picture inspiration and such. I began Ruby Red with nothing. Zilch. It's truly one of those 'make it up as you go along' stories. Ha ha! But the story didn't start out in an Urban Fantasy. Nope.

When I created Beck and Diego, it was a contemporary friends to lovers story that had a misunderstanding as the hump they had to get over. The beginning started with Diego walking down the road with a gas can because his car had stalled. In a fit of anger and rejection, he'd packed all his belongings and was in the process of moving out of the apartment he shared with Beck. They had shared one great night and then Beck disappeared for days. No call. No text. No message or email... and it didn't work. I sort of hated Beck, because how rude, you know? I despised the misunderstanding. I hated the contemporary world because I was bored, bored, bored.

I complained to my husband about it and he asked a simple question. "Does it have to be contemporary?" Well, duh on me. It didn't, and once I moved it over to the UF setting the writing monster took over. When I was almost finished, I was talking to the husband (it's a theme. Everything is bounced off him.) about these amazing moves Diego could do, and he said, "Oh, he's good at parkour?" I was like, "Par-what?" He hooked me up with a couple of YouTube videos and that was all she wrote. I went back to the ms and made some adjustments because, Hell Yes, Parkour!

On a side note, if you're a gamer then you've either heard of or played Assassin's Creed. It's a game that is heavy in parkour and I love it. Some Assassin's Creed fans put together some videos along the parkour lines. These guys are real life parkour athletes. I attached one of my favorite videos for your viewing pleasure.

And back to my story. When I finished, I worried big time about the violence in Ruby Red because Diego was unforgivingly (I know that's not a word) single-minded in his defense and protection of his family and friends. I thought for sure that romance readers would hate the story. On the other hand, my husband loved it. Diego still is his favorite character I've written. When I did the rewrites he was worried I'd change Diego. Nope. He's the same.

That's the skinny on how Ruby Red came about. Thank you for stopping by the blog today. Don't forget to enter the giveaways!

Taken prisoner by the Flay Tribe to their lair in the ruins of a shopping mall, Tully is forced to become a warrior, while Carla joins the other girls as a kitchen slave and comfort woman.

Tully might like the idea of playing soldiers, but Carla knows what is waiting for the girls when the food runs out, and it isn’t pleasant. The supermarket holy man’s vision of the return of the Burnt Man and his demon friends drags Tully back to reality—when the four fiends are reunited, the Apocalypse will really begin. Carla and Tully don’t plan on being there when that happens.

But in this post-Abomination world where only the young and brutal have survived, where food and fuel are running out, and the climate is plunging into another final ice age, there is nowhere to run—except down another wormhole, with no idea of what might be waiting for them at the other end.

Lead up to the Ruby Red Book Blast & Series Plans

I'm doing something special for Ruby Red this month that will include a giveaway (so make sure to check back on the 18th).

Let me give you a little history on Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger. It has been expanded and re-edited from the original version that was released in 2013. That version was 22k and had been written to meet the specs for a holiday sub call, but didn't qualify. Instead, the publisher accepted the ms to be published after Christmas, so I changed the holiday in the book to match.  The original version was fast paced, speeding through the plot with action sequence after action sequence. For the romance, I started that plotline basically in the middle of the romance because it opens with the sex scene and our two heroes jumping right into the relationship. To do all of that in 22k, there was a ton of telling. I thought the story was missing something. I know there are readers who love the original because it pulled you along through the action and adventure. But the character development wasn't there, in my opinion.

After subbing to LT3, the editor came back with a list of things that could be done to make Ruby Red better, and I agreed. The manuscript went from 22k to 50k. The timeline and events were rearranged. The story starts when Diego was a pre-teen and we get to see his relationship with Denise, Hector, and his parents. We sit with Diego as tragedy strikes his family and he struggles with how he sees his brother verses what others see. We see why Diego decides to pick up the slugger. We are there when he meets Beck for the first time. And... well, you get the idea. All that telling in the original has been moved to showing.

Because the story has been changed, it's not the fast-paced-race-to-the-end story that it once was. The speed has been exchanged to develop the the characters and their relationships with each other. The showing allows you to become invested in them.

I wasn't unaffected either. I loved Diego first and then Beck, but while I was rewriting I fell hard for Hector. Before, he was a plot device, but with the rewriting he came alive for me. I wanted to go all momma bear for him.  Now, I feel deeply about Diego's relationship with Hector.

What do I have planned for the series? The plan is *knocks on wood* for the series to be six books. The challenge and danger Diego and Beck face is huge. In their struggle they will be joined by two other couples who will be introduced in Werewolf's Tale and a Druid Sword. The series will cycle through these three couples to come together in the end to help each other. That's the plan at least. :)

That's the whole ball of wax on Ruby Red. :) Make sure you come back on the 18th and check out the double giveaway.

Interview with Clare London with Double Scoop #giveaway

BT_Banner

Welcome all.
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Clare London author of Double Scoop.

Thank you for agreeing to this interview, Clare. Tell us a little about yourself and your background?

Hi, I’m Clare London, a published author of gay romantic fiction, often erotic, usually contemporary, but sometimes in other worlds entirely. I publish with several publishers, in print and ebook, I also self-publish, and I offer free fiction on my website. It’s a busy life LOL.

What are your ambitions for your writing career?

I want to gain better crafting skills: I want to continue to enjoy the plots fermenting in my imagination: I want to continue to be be excited by publishing books: I want to create characters that readers can love and empathise with: I want to be (a little) more prolific: and I’d LOVE to make more money at it than I am now LOL!

What is the hardest thing about writing?

Sitting down and doing it! I have many ideas, I envisage scenes in my head, I channel character dialogue all the time. But the hardest thing is sitting down and crafting it onto a screen. I type quickly, luckily, and can find quiet time to think it through. But it’s a struggle to push a story *beyond* that initial excitement. And not only telling a story, but telling it in a professional and structured format so it’s not just a stream of consciousness/list of words LOL. I edit as I go, and am continuously tweaking and refining the words I use to create the scene. If *I’m* happy with how a page reads, then I hope another reader would be. That balance of craft and storytelling is, in my opinion, the hardest balance to strike.

If this book is part of a series, tell us a little about it?

Double Scoop is #8 of the With A Kick series. What’s With A Kick? A new and enticing ice cream franchise, with a unique blend of full flavour, mischief and romance. Patrick and Lee are struggling to make a success of their alcoholic ice cream shop in the centre of tourist London. At the same time, their business partnership may take a turn towards the personal – if either of them can find the time and nerve to go for it! Meanwhile, they cater to the wild and wonderful range of customers in the area, many of whom have their own romantic agenda. Will ice cream be the final ingredient they’re all looking for?

This is a joint-authored project with fellow author Sue Brown. Each story has a self-contained romance, but follows the history of the shop throughout. And we have plenty more stories to tell!

Who designed your book cover/s? and Do you think that the cover plays an important part in the buying process?

I use several artists for my self-published covers, and of course my publishers have wonderful portfolios to draw on as well. The cover for Double Scoop was done by the marvelous Lou Harper, as were all the covers for this series and also several others of my self-published titles. In my opinion, the cover is a very important #2 in the process of selling your book. #1 is for readers to know your book exists out there in the first place: #2 is to draw their attention i.e. the cover: #3 is for them to love your book, so you write the best one you can: and #4 is for them to tell all their friends about it LOL.

What would you say are the main advantages and disadvantages of self-publishing against being published or the other way around?

I enjoy being a hybrid author i.e. with a foot in both camps! I’ve benefitted so much from working with professional publishers – with learning how a book is produced, and all the work that goes into editing, proofing and cover art. I enjoy the benefits of their presence in the industry, and marketing and reputation. It’s a great way to meet #1 of my conditions of selling – of letting readers know I’m there! And now I’m also enjoying self-publishing: the main reasons are the quicker timeframe for getting a book out there, the extra control I have over choosing cover art and formats, and the (slightly) better rate of royalty I earn.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

I’m seeing a lot of new authors arriving in the genre at the moment, and it’s really exciting. I’m also fascinated by the empowerment that e-publishing – and particularly self-publishing – has brought to the market. But if there’s one piece of advice I’d dare to offer, it’d be to look outside your book before you launch. Read (many) other books, see how books are structured and presented, how stories are told. They may not be in your style, but they’re examples of what’s out there: what’s good practice: what *works* for readers. Your prime motivation may not be publishing success, but I’d hope it’s to tell the best story you can, and one that’s rewarding for readers. And if you do move into publishing – do some research on the market. Go Googling, follow self-help websites, ask polite questions if you have friends already in the business. It’ll all add layers of maturity and confidence to your writing. And if/when you decide you want to publish, approach it professionally and respectfully. Always.

TITLE: Double Scoop

SERIES: With a Kick #8

AUTHOR: Clare London

PUBLISHER: Jocular Press

COVER ARTIST: Lou Harper

LENGTH: 45,000 words

RELEASE DATE: April 07, 2016

BLURB: A sudden disaster strikes everyone’s favourite ice cream shop, With A Kick. Not only does it threaten the livelihood of its owner, Patrick, but also his loyal assistant Lee. The last thing in the world Patrick would ever want to do is hurt Lee, either physically or emotionally. Why would he? He’s been falling in love with Lee since the day Lee invited himself into the shop’s business and Patrick’s life. But familiar and deeply-held insecurities hold Patrick back – he’s too gruff for Lee, too old, and his labour-of-love business is never going to make him rich.

Lee is weary of trying to make Patrick see how much he admires and cares for him. To Lee, it’s a very straightforward situation. Patrick is sexy, Patrick is smart, Patrick needs Lee’s help – and Lee needs Patrick in his life as more than a boss. All the characteristics Patrick finds inhibiting, Lee finds attractive. However, if Patrick’s apparently never going to make a move on Lee, how long should Lee wait to make his own move? Maybe Patrick thinks Lee is too clingy, too immature. Maybe Lee should give up his romantic hopes completely. If, that is, he can bear to do it.

The disaster at the shop brings them a whole new opportunity to work – and love – together to make a go of things. They’ve both got to look at each other in a whole new way. With the help of all their With A Kick friends, this could be make or break for the reluctant couple!

Excerpt

Patrick liked this time of morning in London. It was still too cold in February to do without a jacket and scarf, but otherwise he savoured the onset of spring and the pale, bright sun that glistened off the pavements. He took deep, regular breaths, measuring a circular route around Shaftesbury Avenue and Charing Cross Road, pacing himself slower than he would have done when he was younger. It allowed him to take proper note of life happening around him. His friends preferred to travel to St James Park or Green Park, and run around a greener space, but Patrick lived and belonged here in Soho, and never sought anywhere else. He absorbed the exotic mixture of a new day’s aroma: diesel taxi fumes, the crinkled pages of old books, grocery store spices, lingering pub beer, and fried food being cooked at the fast food venues already awake and serving breakfast. He wasn’t a man to wax lyrical at the best of times, but he loved London with a passion.

Sufficiently exercised and with his appetite now fully awake and clamouring for coffee and food, he cut through the streets towards home. Turning the final corner, he slowed to a brisk walk, then stopped. He leaned on a street lamp, regaining his breath and easing his muscles. The front window of With A Kick was already in view with its stylish red paintwork and matching awning. Patrick took a moment longer just to stand and look at it. Every day was the same: the feelings of pride and excitement just as strong. Only a few years ago, he’d been a teacher, aiming for Assistant Head, and planning out the twenty-odd years to early retirement. Good grief. What a boring life in comparison to now!

He laughed wryly to himself. Amazing how ambition could be kickstarted by the end of a lacklustre romance and a previously secure job slipping away. Eighteen months ago, he’d been saddened but not surprised by his boyfriend Rafe moving on—they’d been drifting more out than into each other’s life for months. He’d also seen the writing on the wall about his school having to make redundancies. It had still surprised him how willingly he accepted his when it was offered. He’d always thought of himself as a man who planned and relied on a steady routine, yet in the space of a couple of months, he found himself single again, out of work and slightly depressed from the culture shock. It was as if the whole bloody world had crashed, as opposed to… what? ‘An opportunity for new adventures and new challenges’, his late dad would have said. His dad had always been a glass-half-full man. Patrick remembered him fondly.

Then things had slowly but steadily fallen into place for him. Now he was an entrepreneur of sorts and, look, his latest ice cream creations were displayed in the window of his own shop, on one of Lee’s brightly coloured posters!

Lee.

That was another thing that never changed: the small lurch of excitement in his gut when he thought of his friend and assistant in With A Kick. Patrick sighed, not at the overall thought of Lee—and Lee’s youth, and good looks, and energy, and cheeky jokes, and slim hips that he swayed outrageously when he was showing off in the shop, and that sexy, sexy grin… anyway, not all that, which Patrick had to admit never ceased to cheer him up every morning in the shop. No, the sigh was for the thoughts that inevitably followed. The ones that reminded him he hadn’t found much success with romance, that he was much older than Lee, much less good looking in a very bear-y type of way, much more tired of life, and with a grin that he couldn’t ever remember anyone saying was sexy

Good God. Enough self-pity for the morning! Lee had plenty of attention from other guys, he didn’t need his nearly-forty year old boss coming onto him as well like some besotted, horny teenager. Besides, Patrick had his commitment to the business to keep him busy, and that was no hardship now that they were starting to make proper money. Yes, when he thought of With A Kick, he did think of “they”. Lee and he were together in running the shop, at least.

"Patrick! Good morning."

Patrick turned and recognised Mr Amsel from the German café across the way, waving at him. Next to the elderly shopkeeper, a wiry young man straightened up from where he’d been crouching beside a pile of boxes. He was also smiling. Patrick waved back at them both. The community spirit among his fellow traders was one of the best things in his life nowadays. The young man, Curtis, was a regular supplier and odd-job man for all of the businesses around here, and Patrick made a mental note to chat to him about replacement tablecloths. Lee had suggested a funkier design, to match a range of ice cream flavours based on musical styles that Patrick was working on at the moment. And if anyone could get something new and unusual for the shop at a good price, it’d be Curtis. Patrick wasn’t in the mood for negotiation before his morning coffee, but he was sure Curtis would call into With A Kick later on for a mug of tea and a ‘Pluck and Play’, his favourite ice. He’d talk to him then.

He glanced back down the road, where the With A Kick shop-front light had just flickered on. Lee must be in early today. Patrick thought he’d declared it was his turn to open up, but he had to admit the thought of Lee bustling around inside the shop had Patrick happily quickening his step.

An alleyway ran down the side of the shop to the kitchen exit, and by the time he reached it, he’d decided they should talk to Curtis about getting some new shot glasses too. Bookings for adults-only, night time parties at With A Kick were really taking off. Out of the corner of his eye, he registered the kitchen light snapping on as well, and the thought of a hot, strong cup of coffee warmed his thoughts. Maybe Mr A would like to quote Patrick for some hot party snacks as well—

The sudden boom took his breath away: a burst of deep, throaty noise, gusting the air past Patrick’s head like the kick back from a jet. A mini tornado, belching without warning from the kitchen door, and bursting up the alleyway and onto the street.

Rubbish bags, stacked against With A Kick’s outside wall, tumbled and rolled as if tossed by giant hands. Loose packaging swirled up in a murky maelstrom, spinning and spiralling into the sky. A pavement display clattered to the ground across the road, and a passing bicycle swerved sharply in front of Patrick with a screech of brakes. A dog started barking furiously.

Patrick had been thrown backwards into the street, and staggered, trying to keep his balance. Someone behind him screamed; he watched the shocked cyclist’s mouth make the shape of “What the fuck was that?” His eyes stung; his hearing was muffled.  A youngster began to wail loudly. Stunned for those few seconds, Patrick was unable to move, unable to think clearly. Voices reached him, but all the words were garbled.

Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes. A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with the weekly wash, waiting for the far distant day when she can afford to give up her day job as an accountant. She’s written in many genres and across many settings, with novels and short stories published both online and in print. She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say she’s just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, she’s happy.  Most of her work features male/male romance and drama with a healthy serving of physical passion, as she enjoys both reading and writing about strong, sympathetic and sexy characters.

Clare currently has several novels sulking at that tricky chapter 3 stage and plenty of other projects in mind . . . she just has to find out where she left them in that frenetic, testosterone-fuelled family home.
