What is on the Reading Radar #WishList #TBR

I missed a couple of weeks posting what's on my reading radar. I had this scheduled for the 6th. *scatches nose* Obviously I didn't finish it in time. These are fun posts for my but they are also labor intensive and I was under the weather for almost two weeks.

This time around, there are a couple on the list that I've already purchased and read. Usually, I'm not ahead of myself but sick in bed... when I wasn't sleeping the illness away, I read. Or tried to. There was one point I was so sick I just couldn't and I lamented the wasted hours/days.

It’s a foolproof strategy...until the emotional balance shifts.

After yet another adoption falls through, Gabe is ready to give up, and Shahid isn’t far behind him. Apparently, being a gay couple—half of which is Muslim—is just one strike too many for the powers that be.

When their friend Kendra offers to carry their baby for them, both men balk at first, but gradually warm to the idea. Especially Gabe, whose bisexuality is open to the chemistry among the three of them.

The plan seems simple. Kendra and Gabe, foregoing the cold, impersonal IVF clinic, paperwork and red tape, will conceive the old-fashioned way. They’ll all share parenting responsibilities, and live happily baby after.

But as the heat flares between Gabe and Kendra, Shahid’s long-suppressed insecurities bubble to the surface. Then some unexpected news catches the trio off guard and derails their plans—and now one heart could be left out in the cold.

My fifteen minutes of fame was more like five seconds, and my girlfriend left me in disgust.

But . . . I keep having these weird thoughts. Thoughts about how much I like the way he makes me laugh. Thoughts where I kind of want to kiss the emo-narcissist, even though he’s a ghost and an asshole and I can’t touch him anyway. And even if I could, what will happen when he finishes his business and nothing’s keeping him here anymore?

Curiosity Quills Press (October 27, 2014)
Length: 285 pages
Genre: Romance / Gay / Paranormal / Mystery / Thriller / Futuristic / Dystopia

Notes:

Blurb:

Lieutenant Colonel Nik Zhukov is just like any other desensitized seventeen-year-old living in the year 2076. At least he likes to think he is when he isn’t busy eliminating threats to national security, breaking up terrorist organizations, and trying not to get blown up. It’s all in a normal day’s work for one of the military’s top dogs, and he’s never disappointed. Never failed. Never lost sight of his dream of making it to the elite force, even as each new job forces him to see just how morally corrupt his leaders are.

On the verge of promotion, Nik is dispatched to the underground city beneath the icy Seattle tundra, his final mission handed down directly from The Council. It should have been a simple in-and-out, but the underground is full of dark secrets and he soon finds himself swept into battles, lying to his best friend back east, and growing a bit too close to the rebels he was sent to spy on.

Nik realizes too late that he’s broken the number one rule within his ranks; he’s allowed himself to feel normal for the first time in his life. He might be able to turn the job around, become the soldier he was once was, except for his growing attachment to the rebel leader. A guy. Yet another first for Nik. It’s a mistake he pays for dearly when he learns The Council’s true intentions for the city.

It’s never ‘just harmless fun’ when you’re a government dog, not when The Council holds the leash. Nik knows there are some lines you can never come back from crossing, and he’s forced to choose whose rules to play by. He races toward the invisible divide, aware he’ll be called traitor by both his nation and by his friends. Aware that even the right choice can be deadly to make.

Select Titles 50% Off! #ValespianPact #SumeriasSons

So I've been sicker than a dog lately. First with something very much like bronchitis and then with the stomach flu. Spent lots of time in bed and after a week and a half, I'm still not 100 percent but feeling better than I was.

Because I was paying only half my attention to the world around me, I saw that my publisher had a sale on select paperbacks. Now, granted, my first thought was, "Oh, I can get some of my favorites!" and not, "I should tell everybody that some of my books are 50% off, too." What can I say? I was sick and my mind went straight to comforts reads. Ha ha!

So here's my announcement. Your can find select paperbacks on sale from 25% to 50% from now until March 31.

Alpha Trine (Valespian Pact, 1)
Regular Print Price: $12.99 Sale: $6.48 (Save 50%)

Blurb: The sole survivor on a science vessel adrift in deep space, Zeus was adopted by the Emperor and Empress of the Mar'Sani, though he is both human and blind, and seen by most as unfit to join the royal family. Though they were able to repair his vision, Zeus does not trust his eyes and the nobles of his parents' court refuse to ever trust a frail human.

Dargon Kal-Turak, along with his symbiote and lover Alpha, command one of the most dangerous ships in the stars. Narrowly escaping a trap, they dock in a space port to make repairs, but find that the Psionics hunting them are closing in fast. In desperation they kidnap the port Master Mechanic, unaware that the man they've brought on board is more than he seems, and will bring far more upheaval to their ship, their lives, and the stars than any of them could have imagined.

Striker (The Valespian Pact, 2)
Regular Print Price: $16.99 Sale: $8.47 (Save 50%)

Blurb: The peaceful respite for which Zeus and his intended, Dargon and Alpha, had been hoping for is shattered when Zeus is unexpectedly drawn to the Waters of Poseidon and told that the safety they've been promised is a trap.

But the Fal'Amoric aren't the only important cargo on the Oethra 7, and countless others are depending on the success of their mission. If Zeus hopes to break the silent siege on Valespia and protect those most precious to him, he will need not just powerful allies but the fortitude to survive overwhelming odds.

Twin Flames (Sumeria's Sons, 1)
Regular Print Price: $11.99 Sale: $5.98 (Save 50%)

Blurb: A Lycan descendant of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, Tristan is not as extraordinary as his ancestors. He is an average warrior, unremarkable throughout. But this fact does not trouble him because he has found his Twin Flame, the one person destined to be his, who will love him unconditionally, life after life.

Then his Flame betrays him, leaving him shattered and dying. Brokenhearted, Tristan dissolves the sacred bond and leaves. His best friend, Ushna, accompanies him, vowing to guard and protect him, and Tristan slowly comes to realize that love does not require a sacred bond.

But if he hopes to keep the love he chooses, they will first have to survive ancient secrets, lies, mythical creatures, and the return of absent gods...

Regular Print Price: $11.99 Sale: $8.99 (Save 25%)

Blurb: Thrust into the role of Prince of the Lycans, Tristan strives to find his footing in a life suddenly rife with secrets and lies—and danger. And then the worst comes to kill them...

Regular Print Price: Sale: $10.49 (Save 25%)

Blurb: For Tristan and Ushna, nothing comes easy and with each passing day the challenges grow and the dangers multiply. The safe home they are building for their family and tribe is threatened from all sides, and the peace they seek is being torn apart by enemies and internal strife. Tristan dares not reveal his condition to any but those closest to him, all the while he's plagued by dreams he cannot remember upon waking...

And over all of it hangs the knowledge that his time with Ushna is running out. Because Ushna already has a Flame awaiting rebirth, and though Tristan would die to protect that bond, he constantly struggles against his beast who demands they bind Ushna to their side.

Regular Print Price: $11.99 Sale: $8.99 (Save 25%)

Blurb: Tristan has agreed to bond with Ushna, but there is still much to do and returning to Tribe Enkidu puts everyone on edge. Tristan is being stalked like prey, all the while fighting depression as he mourns the loss of Nikita, and enduring a battle of wills with the Elder Council over his birthright. The pleading of his adoptive daughter only adds still more stress to the situation.

Stumbling onto a secret prison while searching for Ushna leads Tristan to risk everything to free a lost God. But breaking the tie to his Flame has more repercussions than Tristan knew and the assistance of a forgotten Goddess and a centuries old lover may not be enough to save him.

Regular Print Price: $18.99 Sale: $14.24 (Save 25%)

Blurb: In the wake of birth and betrayal, Ushna takes the God Ashur to Tristan in a last desperate bid to save Tristan's life—and is helpless to do anything but watch as Ashur instead buries him in a grave. Guest Spotlight: Stay With Me by Lily Adile Lamb

TITLE: Stay With Me
AUTHOR: Lily Adile Lamb
COVER ARTIST: Melissa Bell
LENGTH: 32,800 words approx
GENRE: Contemporary, M/M, Interracial Romance

RELEASE DATE: March 02, 2016

BLURB: It has been weeks since Curtis first saw the young waiter with the haunted eyes. No matter how often he went to the café to find the right opportunity to introduce himself, that moment simply did not come that quickly. Joseph was aware of the gentle giant who quietly came to have his lunch and then left day after day. Fearing his father’s wrath and under his ever watchful eyes, he made no moves nor overtures. Until one day when the other man approaches to him… Hope can turn to love... interracial love

A month had passed since Curtis had first seen the waiter. He wasn’t sure whether he should continue going to the café each day for lunch, because he hadn’t found the courage to approach the guy. He tried to look as though he only went there for the good food and not for the man himself. The waiter was certainly cute, but more than that drew Curtis in. The sadness that overlaid the sweetness caught his attention and held it. That was what kept him coming back again and again.
It made his heart heavy to think people might’ve noticed his behavior, and were thinking that he was creepy. Who wanted to be known as a creepy stalker-bear guy?

He prayed that he was being subtle, and hoped he wasn’t receiving any speculative looks from anyone. But he really had to make a decision soon—either strike up a conversation with the guy, or stop coming for lunch and torturing himself.

There he was, wiping a table for a couple of customers. He was wearing the same style of clothes as before. The jeans he wore looked old and frayed, but they hugged his cute little ass as he bent over and took a swipe at the table with a damp rag. When he stood up, it was obvious the shirt was as old as the jeans. It was thinned to nearly nothing from frequent laundering. It was so transparent, it could have been made of gauze, and Curtis could see the guy’s ribs.

Curtis didn’t even realize he stood stock-still, staring at the man, until his eyes caught the old man at the cashier’s desk, glaring at him with a clenched jaw. His deep frown made Curtis’s cheeks burn. He looked at his phone and checked for messages, but still furtively watched the waiter. He saw the expression he’d come to recognize as sadness, but this time, there was more to it. He looked like a man who’d lost all hope. He was also limping and dragged his feet at times.

Is he injured? Why does he look like he’s in despair? Fuck. What’s happening in his life? Curtis wondered if something bad had happened to him.

Tired of standing, he took a seat and switched his Kindle on.

That's it. I’m going to talk to him today. Curtis made the decision as he rubbed his hand on his thigh, his appetite deserting him at the thought. I’ll wait until an opportunity arises. In the meantime, he went back to reading his Kindle.

“Excuse me, did you order the Teriyaki Chicken?” a hoarse voice asked.

“Oh, yes. That's what I ordered. Thanks, and I’m so sorry for not waiting… I forgot. You know.” Curtis tried to look innocent as he stared at the man’s face. “Hey, are you okay? I noticed you’re limping?” Curtis asked to start his long-desired chat.

The man nodded. “Yes. I twisted my ankle yesterday.” His lips smiled, but his eyes were dull and red as if he’d been crying.

Who hurts him? Fuck, there’s something seriously wrong with this guy, Curtis thought with a heavy heart.

“Oh. Okay. Hope you'll feel better soon.” Curtis smiled, rubbing his chest as if he was in pain.

When the waiter blushed at Curtis’s gaze, he felt a rush of heat all over his body, and his breathing picked up a notch. He thought the guy’s blush was a positive hint that he might also be aware of Curtis.

February Reads #Bookshelf #SomethingToTalkAbout

I'm breaking up my editing time with something fun. I came across some excellent stories in February and I wanted to share.

Even though I was reading predominately shifters and fantasy, I've been collecting Sci-Fi stories to gorge on in March and possibly April. Many of the science fictions are human only, which is great, but I'd like to mix it up with some alien/anthropomorphic characters, a la Barbarian Ice Planet or Details of the Hunt. I really, really like the sci-fi adventures or the ones where the plot has equal weight to the romance. And as you know by now, I read it all: MM, FF, Poly in all variations, Trans, Asexual. I don't care. Give it to me. If you have any recommendations, please feel to leave them in the comments. *makes grabby hands*

On to what I liked in February. These stuck with me. The characters, the plots, and I really wanted more and I really, really wished they were in audiobook form.

I have had this in my library for a long while. One would've thought I'd have read it when I picked it up. I remember why I didn't and it was because I'd picked up several books about dragons around the same time. I read the others first and my dissatisfaction had me moving away from the dragons to read something else. And I admit that those emotions became tied up with this book cover even though I didn't take a peek at the first chapter. A couple of months ago, a friend of my sent this as a recommendation and I gave it a go.

Why didn't I make myself take another look at Reawakening again before now? It was fantastic. The world, the characters, and the writing were all superb. I immediately picked up the second book in the series. You can tell that so much thought and planning went into this series with dragons and gods against the powerful nemesis, the Shadow. The world is written so exquisitely, that the scenes were colorfully brilliant. I could feel the hot wind, the gritty sand, the coolness coming down from the mountains. I can't wait for the next book. More please!

Reawakening and Resistance

You ever meet a character that you want to take home and feed and just take care of? Rath is that person. He's genuinely a good person and his father takes advantage of that. He enters the tournament to pay off a dept, but he can't quit, he has to be eliminated in order to keep the money he won in the first part. Unintentionally, he keeps winning and he's conflicted about that. I rooted for him and held my breath and wanted to hug him so hard. I loved it all the way to the end.

Tournament of Losers

A Bear Walks into a Bar is Erotica, which means that the sex drives the plot. There is lots and loves of sex, but there is a purpose to it. And I really liked the story. I couldn't read it all in one sitting, but it stayed with me, and I kept coming back for more. I'm always amazed at good erotica because there is so much sex you expect the scenes to just be duplicates of each other. Here, no. Through it all, you could see what Sawyer was pushing to accomplish. There is a purpose to every encounter, and I hope Eden writes a sequel because I want to see what happens next.

A Bear Walks Into A Bar

I finished this one last night. I need to see if there are any more stories by Oakes because this was an excellent take on Beauty and the Beast. This is an fantasy that has an alternate history for humans with dystopia that isn't as grim as others. The miasma that separates the towns is deadly and people cannot pass through without the Keeper's help. They are the ones who protect the towns. Every ten years, the immortal Keeper asks for a companion.

Everyone sees Ash as fragile, but really, he's not. He's so earnest and hopeful. He tries so hard. He'd been an orphan for so long you'd think he'd already be jaded and wary of others, but he wasn't which, for me, endeared him to me all the more.

Ravenhearth

I've been holding on to this for a while. I loved the first book in the series, and I saved this for a time when nothing was working for me. The Bad Oak Boy series is about the members of a rock band who are latent shifters. When they meet their mate, their wolf awakens, and then they shift. I really like the overall world these stories are set in, where humans knows there are shifters, but it's not something anyone talks about. These are also mpregs and I liked the unique way the alpha give birth. Alpha Shaman is about the band member, Josh Oakley, and the Alpha Shaman, Gerwulf. It's a great addition to the series and reveals more about the troubles the shifters have been having.

When I finished, the third book had just released, and I jumped into Wulfgang. Silas is trying to take a 'vacation' and hide for the summer as a college professor. I liked that we get to see a different pack. I'd been wondering what would happen with so many alphas coming out of the Oakley clan, you know? We also get the teaser for Silas's brother changing without meeting his mate to be a lone wolf. So there is one more to the series and I can't wait.

Talking about shifters and something different. Dangerous Territory is a historical western in an alternate history where people know of shifters in the old west. This is a quick read with different type of shifter. I loved the mix and was rooting for Carter. I really, really wanted to put his sister over my knee and that so called brother-in-law I would've shoved into the river. Just sayin'. What a snake. I would totally read a sequel to this if Cari ever thought to pen one.

I'm putting the second book of this series first because I read these out of order. The first one is a menage, and you know I love my poly, but the blurb for this one had me reading even though I didn't have the first book in the series. For those who don't read poly, you can skip the first book and start here because everything was explained well enough that I wasn't lost or confused. Very well done.

I liked it so much that I immediately searched out and bought the first book. Even though I knew of some of what happened, I needed to read it. I still loved it even though I knew some of the spoilers from the first. When I finished, went begging for more--literally. Misha was nice enough to let me know that book 3 will be out in April. Yes, please!

Release Day! Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger #Excerpt

Today Ruby Red, the extended and re-edited version has released! Whoot!

Today, I'm being hosted by the  QueerScifi Blog. You can also find me on the QSF FaceBook Page and Gayapolis.

I've gotten the question a couple of times from those who've read the original story a few years ago. Has Ruby Red been expanded/re-edited? Yes! The original story was around 22k and this version is around 50k. The timeline and events have been rearranged and all the telling was switched over to showing. The story backtracks to when Diego was a preteen and we see his relationship with his best friend, Denise. You get to meet Diego's brother, Hector, and be there when Diego and Beck met. So much better than the original. The essence of Diego and Beck is the same with Diego struggling with his feelings for Beck. I love the end result of expansion and I think you will, too. ~Lexi

CHAPTER ONE

Diego walked the dreaming. Not the normal everyday imaginings of deep sleep, but the type of dream his abuela whispered of, where the veil of time drew back to show him the future. Unlike a normal dreamscape, where the colors were flat and the people one-dimensional figments of his imagination, here in the dreaming he'd one day be able to walk the scape as events unfolded around real people.

He was barely twelve years old and this was his very first dreaming. Abuela would be proud, and even though he wanted to run and tell her, he had to put his enthusiasm aside and do his duty well. Until the veil dropped back down, he wouldn't be able to pull away from the dreaming. But why would he want to? This was a blessing from the Gods. His responsibility was to watch and learn, but more importantly, he had to remember.

A heavy fog caressed his skin as the mist slid past him. The cold touch caused a shiver to work its way up his spine. He stood in a warehouse, and the concrete had a layer of grit that clung to the bottom of his bare feet. The smell of old oil burned his nose and coated his tongue. No matter how many times he swallowed, the rancid taste clung to his mouth. People clustered around a painted circle in the open area of the floor. Diego recognized many of the gangbangers that belonged to The Man who ruled their streets of East L. A. with an iron fist.

A lead ball formed in Diego's stomach. No one looked at or acknowledged him, but they moved out of his way all the same. Diego's toes butted up against the broad white line. The mark wasn't painted on the floor as he'd first thought, but was chalky, like the powder used to mark a baseball diamond. The noise of the crowd unnerved him. He could see faces of the people, mouths moving exaggeratedly as they spoke, but their voices were odd: their slow, slurred speech made the words almost intelligible. The laughter, though—the eerie cackling skirted over his skin and filled him with dread.

On the other side, the crowd hoisted someone above them. He rode the outstretched arms until he reached the edge of the circle and then they set the person on his feet inside. Diego's brother, Hector, appeared alternatively nervous and excited as he bounced around the interior of the ring on the balls of his feet. Five years older than Diego, Hector was the tallest person in their family, just shy of five foot ten. Diego wanted to have a strong body like his brother's when he was older, but his madre told him Hector spent too much time at the gym and not enough time on his studies to make good grades. Hector claimed he had to be strong to protect their sisters from the vatos. Diego couldn't deny how proud he was when people stepped warily away from the line when Hector bounced close, yelling excitedly at the crowd. His hermano had a reputation for ruthlessness when he defended the familia, and the vatos had learned the hard way to keep space between them and Hector.

Something—someone—stepped into the circle, the figure blurred and wispy-thin as if they were a ghost and not a solid person. Hector halted before the apparition, his expression sobering, his pinky tapping nervously on his thigh. Who would make Hector anxious? Hector was fearless; no one scared him. Well, perhaps there was one person. The Cadillac Man. Now that Diego thought about it, the sensation pressing against his skin wasn't caused by the crowd, but had always been caused by the nearness of the Cadillac Man.

"Hector Emmanuel Hernandez," Diego flinched, shocked Hector had given someone his full name. Their abuela warned to never do so. Names had power and could be used against them. The raspy quality of the voice caused Diego's hair to stand on end. "Do you vow your service unto me, do as I bid of your own free will, and will you be loyal to me in exchange for the safety of your family?"

Hector bobbed his head at each question, bouncing in place. "Yes, sir."

Black smoke drifted from the blurred figure, the tendrils snaking around Hector's ankles. "No," Diego breathed. Something was wrong—he had to stop Hector. He went to step over the line and an electrical current zapped him as he ran into an invisible wall. Blue webbed lines spread out from where he frantically struck the barrier again and again, ignoring the sharp pain in his fists.

"Will you accept the gift of the jaguar, willingly submit to the way of the warriors of old?" The grating voice held an air of expectation.

Diego slammed his fist against the wall. "Hector, no!" he shouted.

"Enter your blood into the book of binding." The apparition held out a large weathered tome several inches thick.

Withdrawing a pocket knife from his jeans, Hector sliced his palm over the yellowed pages. He squeezed blood from his fist while Diego yelled and screamed for Hector to stop. Couldn't he feel the wrongness of this place, in the people surrounding him? Did Hector not see the darkness of the person he was vowing himself to?

"It is done." The finality of the statement was like a punch to Diego's gut.
