What's on the Reading Radar #wishlist #TBR

I'm preparing to take a trip to Chicago to spend a week with Molly. But first I need to start putting all my stuff together so that I can work from her house while I'm there. I also have a birthday dinner to attend tonight for my beautiful niece. So lots going on today. :)

Writing is going okay. I've started on Part Two of Bespoken, which is pretty cool. The guys are a bit older but still young. Lots of fighting and battles to navigate and a kraken munching on the enemy. That was pretty fun to write. Ha-ha!

From the beginning, Sam has known Michael possessed gifts: the ability to see and hear things Sam cannot.

When a report of a body in a massive snow-filled depression up a mountainside sends Sam and his deputy, Digger, to investigate, Sam struggles to reconcile the existence of skinwalkers in Pine County with the world he’s familiar with. Michael, though, deals with this reality through his art, and through the mysticism he’s been gifted. Title: Once Upon a Time in the Weird West
Series:
Author(s): Ginn Hale, Astrid Amara, Shira Anthony, Lex Chase, Jana Denardo, Jamie Fessenden, Kim Fielding, Andrew Q. Gordon, Langley Hyde, C.S. Poe
Length: 466 pages
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Genre: Anthology / Fantasy / Steampunk / Sci-Fi / Gay / Old West /

Notes:

BlurbThis isn’t the same old Wild West. The usual suspects are all present: cowboys, outlaws, and sheriffs. There’s plenty of dust, tumbleweeds, horses, and cattle on the range, but there are also magical gems, automatons, elementals, airships… even dinosaurs and genetically modified insects. Roaming among the buffalo and coyotes, you’ll encounter skinwalkers, mad engineers, mythical beings cloaked in darkness, and lovers who stay true to their oaths… even beyond the grave. On this frontier are those at the mercy of their own elaborate devices, as well as men whose control of time and space provides a present-day vision of the West. There might even be a dragon hidden amongst the ghost towns and wagon trains.

If you like your Westerns with a splash of magic, a touch of steampunk, and plenty of passionate romance between men, these genre-bending tales will exceed expectations.

Hold on to your hats, cowboys and cowgirls. The West is about to get weird, and you’re in for a hell of a ride.

Everything, that is, except Eli.

Eli is a wanderer. He’s a wolf shifter who can’t seem to settle down, though he has developed deep feelings for Brandon. He senses that there’s more to Brandon than meets the eye, though Brandon seems to be unwilling to share his secrets.

During an intimate moment in Brandon’s bed, Eli makes the biggest mistake of his life: He shifts into wolf form without warning. Shocked and terrified, Brandon banishes Eli from his home. Brandon thinks that’s the end of it; until he shifts himself a few weeks later.

When Eli returns to try and make amends, he discovers that Brandon is moonlocked. He can’t control his body, and shifts in spite of every attempt not to any time the moon is full. Eli, concerned for Brandon’s well-being, whisks him away on an adventure despite Brandon’s protests. A reaper—and his loaded soul stone—have gone missing. The stone contains souls that might get permanently stuck if Kam doesn't find it, like, yesterday. She tracks the reaper down to a food truck outside Kansas City, only to find a dead reaper and no soul stone in sight. Which means that someone who should be dead killed the reaper and is running around with a powerful magic item. Not good.

And apparently the killer is targeting food-truck owners that also happen to be Hidden. So the only thing to do is open her own truck and go undercover—goodbye Kam the Djinn, hello Mobile Food Entrepreneur—and hope that she and her new runaway friend won't be the next targets…

This book is approximately 65,000 words

Blog Tour: In Enemy Hands by M.A. Church #giveaway #interview

bt_banner

Welcome to the blog, M.A. Church. Congratulations on you new release, Enemy Hands! *happy wiggles* I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy. Thank you for answering some questions for us!

How much research do you do?

Oh Lord, a lot. And that’s not as easy as it sounds, especially when you’re writing about things that don’t exist or haven’t been invented. If I’m doing shifters, then I read all I can about the type of animal I’m focusing on. I look at their habitats, mating habits, and diets, just to name a few.

If I’m writing about a Jaguar, then I try to keep my shifter in animal form as close as possible to a real animal. Sometimes I’m writing about an alien creature I created, and that can be both harder and easier. As with anything else you create, it has to make sense, even if it doesn’t exist.

Have you written any other novels in collaboration with other writers?

I have, yes. Unfortunately, that first time didn’t go well, but I have talked to a couple of other authors about possibly co-authoring with them. I learned a lot from that first time, and I won’t make the same mistakes. Those authors also do a lot of science fiction and paranormal and are popular. I have high hopes eventually this will happen. Of course, it’ll be after I meet the deadlines I’ve promised to my publisher, LOL.

What made you decide to sit down and actually start something?

I was surfing the net looking for free short stories to read and ran across this site called Literotica There was this section called Gay Male. I was like… OMG, how have I missed all this? And boy, did I read every single story there! There were some very good ones, and some very, very bad ones, lol.

After reading for half a year, I decided to try my hand at writing a story. Later, I wrote A Tah’Narian Christmas and entered it in a contest at Literotica. It won first place. That success prompted me to try my hand at publishing. Not long after that, Dreamspinner contracted Priceless. That was in 2012.

Do you write full-time or part-time?

This is full-time for me. I treat writing just like any other job I’ve had through the years.

Do you write every day, 5 days a week or as and when?

I try to, but it doesn’t always work out. Some things just can’t be ignored—like grocery shopping, lol. Other things come up too, plus my daughter moved back home, so we do things together. Then, of course, if there’s a football game on, I’m in front of the TV. But even if I have other things planned, I do try to spend a couple of hours writing most days.

BLURB: Two very different civilizations—one bathed in bright sunlight and the other veiled in shadow. Bad decisions, declining resources, and a king on the brink of madness force Prince Varo Kutchif, third son of the royal family and a starship captain, to attempt the impossible: barter for Black Phospolrock, an energy source the mysterious Helkan Kingdom has in abundance. Varo opens a line of communication with Adlar, an intriguing Helkan who seems to reciprocate Varo’s interest. He hopes so, because if negotiations collapse, Varo has orders to attack.

The Helkans preside over a planet shrouded in perpetual darkness. Several species have tried to exploit its natural resources through trade with them, but all have failed. Adlar Mondur is the older brother to the Helkan ruler. An assassin of the highest order, he’ll do anything to protect his king and his people—including tracking down the Yesri prince who crash-lands on their planet, leaving an ugly scar across its untouched beauty.

Thus begins a journey where two men from disparate civilizations grow from enemies to lovers.
Excerpt

A low moan came from Varo.

“Come on, then, open your eyes.” Adlar lowered Varo to the ground.

Varo’s eyes twitched, then he slowly blinked them open. “Who… who…?”

Adlar saw the confusion. His grin was as sharp as a knife’s blade as he stared into brown eyes—big, beautifully rich brown eyes. There was no doubt now this was the same Yesri he’d spoken with earlier during negotiations. By some odd twist in genetics, the males of the ruling Yesri family had brown eyes. They were the only ones. All other Yesris either had green or blue eyes.

Adlar waited until Varo focused on him. “Greetings, Prince Varo Kutchif of Yesri.”

“Wh-what? Why am I lying down? You’re using the Universal Language Standard to speak to me, right? You sound funny. Or is it me? And how… how do you know my…. You look like…. Who are you?”

“I’m Adlar Mondur, leader of the D’noir and older brother to King Omori, ruler of Helkan.”

“Helkan? But… how’d I get here?” Varo sat up.

Adlar grasped Varo’s chin. “My dear princeling, you crash-landed on my planet, remember?”

“I… I… yes?” Varo clenched his eyes shut and then opened them again. “Yes, that’s right. I had to make…. Oh goddess! You! I remember you.”

“Excellent. I claim you as my prisoner.”

“P-p-prisoner?” Varo stuttered.

He watched as the confusion cleared and… was that fear in those eyes? How delightful. “I’m sure you know my people do not release our prisoners.”

Adlar smiled at Varo, letting his fangs show. He’d prepared himself for many reactions; he wasn’t ready for Varo to headbutt him. The force of the blow rocked him backward, breaking his grip on Varo.

“Oh frack!” Adlar yelled as he sprawled on the ground. Pain exploded in his face, spreading quickly.

Varo was on his feet and running.

From off to the side, he heard a rolling chuff. He lifted his hand and gently touched the tender, swollen area. He bet a bruise was already forming. He glared at Dar. “Too busy laughing at me to help, I take it?”

Dar yawned, showing off huge canines. He licked his lips, his whiskers twitching as he stared in the direction Varo fled. Then he laid his head between his paws.

Well, he had his answer. “Fine!” Snarling, Adlar launched to his feet and stumbled slightly as he followed Varo. Maybe his head wasn’t as hard as he thought.

Even with the pounding in his ears, he could still hear the harsh breathing of Varo as he crashed through the jungle. And crash he did since Varo couldn’t see as well as Adlar could. Adlar needed to end this before Varo broke a leg or something.

“Stop!” Adlar yelled. Then a new thought hit him. “All this noise will draw predators straight to you!”

Receiving no answer, he dug deep, pushing his body to move faster. That was his prey, and when he caught Varo, he was going to…. A sudden flash of purple streaked past him. Oh, so now the temperamental batar decided to help?

Adlar growled as Dar’s long strides ate up the ground as he closed in on Varo… then flew past him. He didn’t bother to question why Dar bypassed Varo—the irritating feline must have a reason.

2016 Year End Review #publishing #writing #planning

The year 2016 looks very different from 2015, publishing-wise. 2015 was full and hectic with releases of one kind or another every couple of months. 2016 wasn't too bad. I had three releases: Ruby Red Booty Shorts and a Louisville Slugger, Werewolf's Tale and a Druid's Sword, and Death Mask. I wanted more. I hoped for more but I just didn't produce as many stories.

My writing "wishlist" looked like this. I wanted to at least complete 6 manuscripts. Instead, I finished 3 (Death Mask, Releasing Chaos, and Devil's Dawn) and started a 4th one (Bespoken).

I thought 6 was a good number because it allowed time to do editing for upcoming releases, but the number was also contingent upon the manuscript's word count sticking to 40-50k. Death Mask was around that number, but Releasing Chaos turned out to be a whopping 130+k. Devil's Dawn was supposed to be 60k but was closer to 90k. And Bespoken is only about a quarter done, sitting at 40k right now.

Why has the number of finished books dropped? Because of the word count is going up. I had to stop and remind myself of that fact time and again. There were moments when I felt as if I was standing still in 2016. But the facts are I can write 40 thousand words a month, on average, and 50k in good months. When the stories I write end up being three times 40 then it takes three months at the very least to finish writing. That doesn't include the false starts, the rewrites of scrapped sections, or the editing and betaing that needs to be done after I type THE END. I really hate that I can't go faster, but it is what it is and I have to work with my capabilities, not flog myself for things I can't do. That takes time and energy that I don't have. But every once in a while, the "you shoulds" slaps me in the face.

My 2017 writing "Wish List" looks like this and so far I'm on schedule, although Bespoken is going to be at least 50k longer than the 100k I estimated for it.

Even though this looks all neat, tidy, and set, there are some very hard decisions I need to make this year that has to do with the next book in the the I.O.N. series.

Back in August I seriously contemplated not finishing the ION series. There are several reasons. Even though Ruby Red was a re-release, I expected it to sell better than it did. Then those who loved the original version didn't like how I slowed the pace down of the revised version, so it received several mediocre reviews. That was to be expected, but even those who hadn't read Ruby Red before thought the story was lacking and added more mediocre reviews. So low sales and so-so reviews had me rethinking writing anymore
more books in the series. I've heard that Urban Fantasy is a hard sell but so is Sci-Fi and my Sci-Fi does well.

In August, I spent some time with Kenzie Kade and she helped me to do some world building on the 3rd book of ION. At that time, I planned on five books total. After paying more attention to my sales reports than I normally do, I condensed the plot and narrowed the series down to four books. Because really, why spend time writing a series that only a few like and will read?

I decided to wait until Werewolf's Tale released to decide the fate of series. Here in the next couple of months I will decide what to do with the series. It is heartening that readers loved Werewolf's Tale. If the numbers are decent, I'll write the last two books back to back so that I don't get disheartened again if book 3 isn't liked. Besides, leaving a series partially finished irks me personally. I don't want to be that author.

Darksoul is the book that has made me rethink any future self-publishing. I looked like an idiot last year as I attempted and failed to forecast its completion and release. Now it's a year later and it's "almost" finished and still not quite. I didn't put it on the 2017 schedule because I just might take this out back for target practice before burning it. There are times I imagine a huge bonfire fire, explosions, fireworks, and maybe some strangled screams. Darksoul is work of love, it has to be or I'd have given up on it by now. I have this reoccurring nightmare that by the time it comes out, anyone who was interested won't be any more. Ha! But I don't give up (Never give up! Never surrender!) and Darksoul will be published in 2017 sometime.

So that's it in a nutshell, the look back, the glance forward sprinkled with hope and perseverance. I hope y'all like longer stories because that's looks like it'll be a trend with me.

Hope y'all have a Happy New Year!!
